There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

PLEASE DONT CANCELL THE UNIT! THATS ALL!
please bring the show back
The Unit was must watch TV more me on CBS. Well not anymore now that its been canceled. Guess I won’t be watching CBS on Sundays anymore. Idiots. They’ll replace The Unit with a predicable sitcom or nonsense reality show.
This is a complete joke, what a snow job from CBS they finally make a show worth turning off NBC or FOX and then pull it. This is just one more example of how out of touch these corporate, Hollywood fat cats really are from true Americans. They have no idea what we really want, and if they’d spend less time worrying about the money and more time finding out what we really want the money would come. When are these huge corporate jerks gonna remember the basics of business, Provide a quality product that PEOPLE WANT, and the money… Read more »
That really bites CBS not bringing back the Unit. But I guess since it’s not a “reality” show or a “cartoon”….there’s not enough of us left that like the classic movies and TV shows. Oh no, we need cartoons and those stupid shows about people living in a jungle, eating bugs, racing to one place or another, getting up and trying to sing. Give me a break, no wonder people are on the Internet all the time…there’s nothing on TV anymore….Until 24 starts!!
you got to be kidding we love this show ; that figures anything that makes since they take off . only ignorant shows that don’t take a brain to think about get left on.
They didn’t even really give it an ending…could we at least get a movie or something?
This was a great show .I and many of my friends watched it every week——when we found out where it was.Why do the networks do that, move shows around .from week to week .They know that it decreases the viewers. Then they cancel it ,are they just looking for a excuse ? They cancel a show like this and put on ridiculus reality shows that nobody watches. WAKE UP NETWORKS
Ouch!!! We’ve been waiting and waiting for The Unit to return…this show is beyond good…it’s GREAT!! What other show can you watch and find the charactors have passion for their job and home? …and home is supportive or rightfully questionable…ahhhhh come on CBS…You take away the best show for mess…when it’s Me and My over 45 yrs. old friends buying the products…not the snoot nose kid. CBS You Dropped The Ball!!
I am really going ot miss The Unit. It made the thought of going back to work on Monday a little more bearable with something ot look forward to on Sunday evening.
All the crazy shows that are so unrealistic like medium and seeing ghosts can’t compare to a good show like The Unit. Please reconsider
I just can’t believe you would cancel such a great show. I am sure if you wouldn’t have kept moving it around to different nights and times you would have been able to keep your viewers. I know I had to dvr it but I always watched it as soon as I got home the next evening because it was on too late on a sunday night for me but I was dying to see what happened monday evening but a lot of times it wasn’t there due to football games and stuff….always a disappointment when I couldn’t watch it….I… Read more »
Very surprised and saddened to hear that the show was cancelled. I will miss it. Many people I know had been looking forward to another season. I am fired up!
I can’t believe it’s cancelled! I too have been waiting for it to start. Great show. Great cast.
Please bring it back!
One of the only truly entertaining military shows on television. Of course, why would anyone want to watch a uniquely engaging show, when we can view such unrealistic shows as “Medium” and other fantasy evolved nonsense. As a veteran currently serving my country I find it unnerving that American citizens would rather engage in mind-numbing fantasy than to stir up patriotic feelings of which this country was founded on. Then again, maybe I should not be surprised.. God bless America!!
So disappointed that The Unit was cancelled. We have been waiting for it to start this season.
