Last night, ABC’s The Unusuals debuted in the post-Lost timeslot. The network’s had high hopes for the quirky crime drama but many critics have deemed it to be “usual” fare at best. What do viewers think?
The Unusuals revolves around a unique group NYPD detectives that all have secrets. They also have twisted senses of humor, which is helpful since every day could be their last. The series stars several TV show veterans like Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia), Adam Goldberg (Head Cases), Harold Perrineau (Oz), and Terry Kinney (thirtysomething), as well as Jeremy Renner, Kai Lennox, Josh Close, and Monique Gabriela Curnen.
Last night, the Unusuals premiere attracted 6.84 million viewers and a 2.2/6 rating/share in the 18-49 demographic. That’s better than last week’s Life on Mars finale in overall viewers (5.86 million) but it’s essentially the same rating/share in the demo. These aren’t the numbers that ABC was hoping for.
On top of that, there was a significant drop off midway through the episode. There were 7.44 million watching when the episode began and by 10:30, 1.19 million had dropped off. That’s not a good indication that those people will return next week.
Considering that a premiere typically represents a show’s best numbers, none of this is a very good sign for the show’s future.
Did you watch the show and if so, will you be back for more? Worth keeping or time to let it go already?

loved the show abc is making amistake
This is hands down one of the best series of the year and yet like most of the greater shows that have aired it is being shutdown or replaced.
It is clear ABC will not be able to have a show as good or better then this one and yet they are taking it off air????
It sounds to me that ABC needs to find some better exec’s that actually know what they are doing, it’s about time that a good show actually stays on their network but as usual they appear to be letting the opportunity slip away.
This is one of the best shows on TV!!! I hope ABC keeps it.
I love The Unusuals, I love Pushing Daisies and I love Life on Mars. How can you cancel these great shows and keep boring Cold Case and reality shows. I give up on you three major channels!!! Have you watched the AMC and TNT lineup for summer? Think about it………….
KEEP IT! Is there anyway to get through to ABC and try to get it back on?
Why is it that a smart, unpredictable show like “The Unusuals” get cancelled, but the predictable, unimaginative shows stay on?
Great cast, funny and at times profound story lines. I guess if you have to think while watching a show, the network execs are bound to cancel – can’t have thinking during the shows.
This is a great show and I don’t understand why it’s been cancelled???????????
ABC has a great series but they would rather put on junkie cheap reality shows then have a good well written show with a great cast of characters.
Too bad network execs lost their spines oh so long ago. Used to be they’d take a chance for a show that was promising – but I guess ratings for reality shows have them forgetting what real TV was supposed to be for – promting thoughful discussions/reflection about society, not just promoting advertisers wares – cerebral shows take a while to develop a true fan base.
Smart shows (ie Life on Mars, etc) have no champions……in suits anyway.
So long to yet another show for those of us who like to think as we’re entertained.
keeep keeeeeep keeeeeeeep it . i love it
keep keeep keeeeeeep it
Keep it! We need smart shows to off-set all the mindless drivels like “I am a celebrity … pay attention to me” shows. I am very disappointed that shows like the Unusals and Pushing Daisies are getting axed.
This is the best show that has been on in such a long time. I so look forward to it and am devastated you are cancelling it. Please give it another shot. Advertise more, put it on a different time, anything, just bring it back!!
I can’t believe that you are cancelling this excellent show! Shame on you!! To replaced by another mindless reality show?? Why don’t you move it over to cable TV, at least they last there for a while.
