After a four week run, FOX says the honeymoon is over for David E. Kelly’s The Wedding Bells series.
The Wedding Bells follows the Bell sisters, Annie (KaDee Strickland), Jane (Teri Polo) and Sammy Bell (Sarah Jones), who inherited “The Wedding Palace” following their parents’ divorce. The staff also includes Jane’s husband and company COO Russell Hawkins (Benjamin King), photographer David Conlon (Michael Landes), and wedding singer Ralph Snow (Chris Williams).
The series debuted on March 7th on FOX following American Idol. Over 12.4 million watched the initial episode. That sounds impressive until you realize that the comedy lost almost 16 million from Idol. Once Bells started in its new Friday night timeslot, viewership quickly fell even further. The most recent episode attracted only 4.5 million.
Production was shut down yesterday following the completion of the seventh episode. Four episodes have aired thus far and FOX maintains that the remaining three will see the light of day. The Wedding Bells remains on the schedule this week but was already scheduled to be pre-empted next week (for an airing of the movie White Chicks). It’s unlikely that the series will return.
A spokesperson for FOX said, “While we’ve been pleased with the show creatively, and David’s writing was first-rate, (Bells) just didn’t secure the ratings we’d hoped for.” Stay tuned!
Please bring Wedding Bells back. It is a fun show with interesting characters. Why judge this by IDOL? It seems that the interesting and fun shows get cancelled and the filthy violent ones get to stay one forever. I for one like Teri Polo very much and see her in a lot of Hallmark shows. BRING THIS BACK!!!
I just found out that Wedding Bells got cancelled and I’m devasted! Why would you cancel this wonderful entertaining show. I really looked forward to Friday nights because of this show. I love the cast and the writing. Please, please bring this show back. It is one of the few wonderful and entertaining shows that have made it to tv. You’ve disappointed a great many people by pulling the plug on this show so prematurely. It’s a mistake.
Of course they ditch a GREAT show. Finally there was a family show that was hysterical. The situiation and comedy was great. It was a wonderful change from all the crime and psychic shows that are offered now. It needed more than 4 weeks to get a fan base.
Well, I hope after you read all these pleads to keep the show running that you will put it back on the air BUT of course that won’t be the case because all that you think sells nad interests Americans is sex, drugs & money!! I hardly ever watch fox in the first place but I really did enjoy the show and it was a show that I could watch with my young children around! It really is a shame that there isn’t a network that can’t just show good, wholesome new shows so that ALL family members are able… Read more »
What are the fox people talking about? Everyone loves the show. Look how many people are commenting. WE LOVE IT!! Everytime The Wedding Bells would come up i would stop whatever i was doing, because it really catched my attention. We doesn’t fox give it another shot. GIve it about 3 months and see what happenes. They only aired Wedding Bells for a few weeks. Give it some more time please. I’m pretty sure after a few “MORE WEEKS” you’ll be getting lots of viewers. PLEASE! I’m really disapointed about this. I was looking forward to the next eposide.
I can’t believe you have canceled Wedding Bells! I had just begun to tell family and friends it was good but not DIRTY. You are FOX. It takes a few weeks for people to even know that you have a good show. Please, continue the show.
I cannot believe this show was canceled. I loved it.. It was so funny, but yet touched right to everyones feelings in regards to love and marriage, sex, etc. This was a wonderful show. I cannot believe it is gone. I am with everyone else when it comes to idol. I have watched faithfully every season. Now I believe it is rigged. I am through with FOX!!!
It is a shame that you cancelled the show! My mom & I enjoy watching Wedding Bells.
I want to know when will you air the last 3 episodes?!
Really, really, REALLY am upset that Fox has yet again stuck a wonderful show in bad slots and then cancelled it without even giving it a fighting chance. The Wedding Bells is far and away one of the best shows on this season. In a TV market filled with reality-crap, mindless laughtrack supported sitcoms and crime-drama on top of crime-drama you’d think someone would recognize the potential of something DIFFERENT. I hope some other smart network (hint hint USA) will pick it up.
I, too, have been wondering where Wedding Bells went to. I just googled it and want to cry!! I loved this show! There’s not much on Friday nites, but this was something to look forward to. FOX, you need to pay Attention to all of us!! There are so many Baby-Boomers with money that watch this show. You are missing the boat, so are the advertisers. What a well written and well acted comedy! I actually would laugh out load watching the episodes. I rarely do that with other comedies (most are so boring). FOX needs to can the idiot… Read more »
This is such a wonderful, witty and smart series. Finally there was something great to watch on Friday nights. Is there any way to save the show and bring it back??!
I finally found a show on Friday night that I LIKED!! And you go and cancel it 🙁 I kept wondering the last couple of weeks what had happened, thinking that maybe the network was just working on new episodes, only to find out it was cancelled. I’m really disappointed, as it seems many others are. Please reconsider!!
Are you crazy? You cancel one of the funniest shows to come along in a long time after 4 weeks, of which 2 weeks were moved to a new night with no notice to speak of? Who makes your decisions? You better fire that guy! This is really sad! Just by word of mouth this was becoming a popular show – people I told about it went to watch it and could not find it. You all made a sorry mistake!
I posted a response before I read all of the above responses. I then went back and read them. Wow, each one of them could have been written by me! Here is what I observed: 1. Both husbands and wives watched it together (even though a lot of husbands are normally only interested in sports) 2. ALL of the above (just about) said it was one of the funniest (we all laughed) shows we had seen in a long time! 3. We were telling family, coworkers and friends to watch this show! 4. We all are tired of violence, reality… Read more »
I can not believe this! Finally there is a show on that is FUNNY and you guys cancel it? Even my “racing only” hubby watched it and laughed with me! We looked so forward to watching this show! My husband would come home from work and say “remember, Wedding Bells is on tonight” You did NOT give this show enought time for word of mouth to have an effect on viewership! Nor was there enought advertising about it. Four weeks? Get real! Both my husband and myself, people at work with my husband who he told about the show and… Read more »
