ABC has renewed some of their summer TV series but The Whispers isn’t one of them. The drama won’t be returning for a second season. To no surprise, the network has cancelled The Whispers after one season of 13 episodes.
On The Whispers, several Washington, DC children start talking about and playing with an imaginary friend. When their mysterious games turn dangerous, FBI child specialist Claire Bennigan (Lily Rabe) is called in to investigate. The rest of the cast includes Barry Sloane, Milo Ventimiglia, Derek Webster, Kristen Connolly, Kylie Rogers, and Kyle Harrison Breitkopf.
The series debuted in June to a 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.66 million viewers. That was a decent start for a summer series but the ratings took a big drop in week two and got much worse as the weeks progressed. The season ended up averaging a 0.83 demo rating with 3.43 million.
ABC let the options on the cast expire at the end of June. Despite that and the low ratings, network execs were supposedly still considering bringing the series back for a second season. Ventimiglia has since confirmed that that won’t be happening.
Sloane recently shared an image that shows an inside joke with the cast and crew.
Found a @TheWhispersABC tee shirt we had made for the crew. This was an ongoing joke. #TheWhispers @MiloVentimiglia pic.twitter.com/lP7T387tGE

Ventimiglia retweeted and joked that “it was always f***** aliens. The best times my brother. Miss em.”
Unfortunately, the fans of the summer series were left with a cliffhanger ending. Hopefully, at some point, the producers will share what might have been.
What do you think? Did you like The Whispers TV show on ABC? Would you have watched a second season? On another channel?
I DVR it, and watch it in one weekend. I don’t understand why they cancell it. It was a great, and interesting show. They have to understand that today many of us – audience – we aren’t watching schows as they are put on TV. We’re DVR it, streaming it as we pleased.. – that’s the younger generation 18-49…
That’s really sad!!
This is so typical..should have jus put it on the. Scify channel…they always mess up a good thing..I still posse about kyleXy…I mean u broadcasters never even try to sell it to another network..just screw the viewers…If it help’s to say I want another season then YES I do!!
I’m highly upset I hope they put it o.k. another channel a better deserving one great show perfectly pitched.
I loved that show! The kids are great actors! Bring it back !
I as really looking forward to season 2…. My friend and I watched it together. What a bummer to cancel the show. Please bring it back…quite a few of my friends also loved it..
Ridiculous. The show was actually very good. Quite a few chilling moments in it. There were a few scenes toward the end of the season that were cringe worthy but overall I thought the show was well acted and was building up a to a great arc.
NBC and ABC are both terrible when it comes to shows like this. I hope the Whispers finds another home.
This sucks. I loved the show and it left on such a cliff hanger.. ABC is one of the worst at keeping and ditching shows.
please bring back the whisperers we were tuned in daily, thats so unfair! its an amazing show come on ABC!!!
This is ridiculous…. Ending the whispers with such a cliffhanger is horrible. 🙁 I’m so pissed at ABC for not bringing a season 2! Give the fans their closure!!
Hey my an my children love an watch that show every Monday night an we even turned other people on to watching it it deserves to be back on the air….thanks
So disappointed. Loves the show. But it happens all the time. Once in awhile ABC can lure me to the channel, but when they do, they cancel the show. And why can’t you wrap it up for those of us who did enjoy it?
Not sure why ever show like this I watch and they cancel it. I guess I have to stay with abc and cbs. Please bring the show back
What the hell? it can not end like that!!!!!! We need a season 2… please please!!!!!!!!
I enjoyed the whispers and look forward to season 2. My friends and I watched it every week and we are 55
What a disappointment! My family didn’t miss an episode! Wish it would stay on a network and not streaming. I felt The Whispers was really an entertaining program.
