Last May, NBC announced that it would be adding two new medical shows. Trauma would begin airing in the Fall and Mercy would come in early 2010. That plan got messed up when production on Parenthood, another new show, was delayed, and Mercy was brought in early to take its place.
With two new medical dramas on the network, many suspected there was going to be one too many. A few months later, one is struggling to survive and the other has been effectively cancelled.
Trauma revolves around a group of first responder paramedics in San Francisco. The high-action series is populated by an ensemble cast that includes Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney.
The drama has had problems attracting viewers from the beginning. Its premiere only attracted 6.68 million viewers and a 2.2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers sank to 5.36 million and a 1.7/4. The numbers have been rising slowly since then but not by much. Monday’s episode hit a post-premiere high of 5.77 million and a 1.9/5, putting the show in fourth place for the timeslot.
To no surprise, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Trauma. While all 13 episodes of the series will be aired, the network won’t be ordering any more. It’s unknown if the cast and crew will be able to give the show any closure by the last episode.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that Trauma is ending or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?
UPDATE: Trauma returning with new episodes.

I love this show, I didn’t realise it was cancelled. I think Mercy should of been cancelled before this one. Bring it back.I was hooked
it’s too bad! that was the only show on nbc my wife and I watched. As a firefighter/ EMT this was a really good show and accurate in it’s cenerios . NBC really needs to bring it back!!!
This has become one of the few favorite shows i have and it’s devastating to know its cancelled.
Too bad, I really liked this show, much better than Mercy.
Bring back trauma……I was hooked. I really liked the show, the action, and the characters. Rabbit rocks.
I love the show! I am so upset that it is cancelled. I thought it was the best new show this year. I feel like the networks don’t even give shows a chance to catch on. The schedule is constantly changing and people have a hard time keeping up with the shows they like. Please give it another chance!
I am so annoyed that Trauma is cancelled. I thought it was the holidays which were keeping them from airing the show. Eevery time I really like a program it goes off the air. I liked the first responder action and how it saves lives. I liked the personalities but has too much sex for me.
After reading so many of the other comments on this blog I decided to add my two cents in once again. It is said that those of us who DVR or TiVo these shows do no count toward the ratings. However, did you ever consider that the main reason why so many people recorded Trauma and watched it later was because it was on opposite Monday Night Football? I was really starting to like Trauma and was excited that it would be the show to fill the whole ER has left. I am a woman but I am also a… Read more »
This has been the best “first responders” type show since EMERGENCY! Some of it’s ratings problem was it was on Monday night and nothing else was worth watching! It had me turning the TV on when otherwise I would have been elsewhere. It did have a rough start but was definitely improving! PLEASE bring it back!!!!
I love this show! Bring it back.
This is a great show, can’t believe it is being cancelled, what are you thinking???
Sigh. I really like Trauma. It was a reasonable replacement for ER and Third Watch. Wish they would have given it another season. Argh. What to watch now? Haven’t seen any other shows worth watching.
I wasn’t fond of the first episode, but then they got better and better. As an EMT found most of the cenerios very accurrate. They need to keep it. I don’t understand why they keep showing stupid “Reality” shows like the Bachelor but they won’t keep an actual drama with real action and suspense. I think the networks need to get some priorities straight. Get rid of all the reality crap! Keep Trama.
I hate that NBC ALWAYS keeps the S**T shows and cancels the good ones. I HATE mercy, she is a dumb, whiny, irritating, well you get the point. I want my TRAMA back!!!!
Stopped watch network shows – everyone I get into they cancel.. This was a good show with a good story line and actoin. But as always network missed the mark and keeps TERRIBLE show – Same as every other medical drama REALLY SORRY TO SEE TRUAMA GO!!! Cable shows here I come..
