The aliens came and, despite some ratings challenges, they are staying — for at least one more season. ABC has renewed the V TV show for a second season.
Like the original, the new V revolves around the arrival of aliens to the planet Earth. While the visitors profess that they’ve come in peace, their ulterior motives slowly become clear. The cast includes Elizabeth Mitchell, Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Logan Huffman, Lourdes Benedicto, Laura Vandervoort, and Scott Wolf.
The series got off to a strong start in November with a 5.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 14.3 million total viewers. At the time, it was the highest rated debut of the 2009-10 season. Unfortunately, a large percentage of those viewers didn’t return for the second week. Episode two brought in a 3.8 rating and 10.7 million.
Week three dropped yet again, to a 3.1 in the demo and 9.26 million viewers. Thankfully, the ratings decline evened off from there. Unfortunately, due to some backstage issues, ABC put the show on hiatus for several months.

When V returned, the show’s ratings were understandably lower than they had been. Still, the drop could have been far worse than it was — attracting a 2.8 in the demo and 7.03 million viewers. The numbers later slipped to a low of a 1.9 rating and 4.87 million.
But now, in the final weeks of the season, V is starting to show a little growth. Last week’s brought a 2.1 and 5.37 million. This week attracted a 2.3 and 5.69 million. These increases seem to mirror the growth in its lead-in’s viewership (Lost) but they are increases nonetheless.
While it would seem that ABC should realistically cancel V, the network has a tradition of showing some faith in one or two struggling programs each year. It would seem that V is one of those shows. According to executive producer Scott Rosenbaum, ABC has renewed V for a second season of 13 episodes.
Will this gamble pay off? ABC has had mixed results in the past. Samantha Who? didn’t work out while Castle has grown nicely. With an ongoing sci-fi storyline, V isn’t exactly the type of show that’s inviting to new viewers. Perhaps the network has a plan. Time will tell.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear that V has been renewed for season two? Are you surprised? What would you do to boost viewership?

Great season finally, hope it doesn’t end here, I’m so disappointed in advertisment, there was none, keep V alive! Long live the 5th column.
You know it would be sad if Abc cancels this show. It is sad when the network is willing to cancel just because it does not have 10 million people watching it. If ABC would not delay the show for two weeks, then maybe the ratings would go up. Let alone you see maybe 3 previews during the next week for the next episode. Take a Saturday and make a rerun day or better yet there is 2 seasons have a marathon day. Do things to get the people to watch it. I know from my point of view that… Read more »
ABC fiddled with the start time of V and No Ordinary Family. All season my DVR recorded the shows with no problem and then they pull a stunt like this. I checked with my cable provider and they reported no problems. And there is no way to see the finales now. Needless to say I’m seriously ticked off!
love this show, we are seniors, but think the story line is well written and keeps its audience in a state of suspension. The actors are very credible in their roles. Please keep this one on the air.!!!!!!
V is a great show with some good actors. The romance between Erica and the two guys is really great and could be better if ABC hadn’t spaced the show out so much. People get tired of waiting for it’s return and frankly we forget where we were. Promote it a little. I love it!
I hope that the show gets renewed for a third season. It beats all those reality shows, American Idol, Dancing witrh the Stars, and the other el-cheapo shows hands down. At least “V” is enjoyable to watch and you never know what’s goint to happen.
Hoping my favorite show will come back for its 3rd season! I love, love, love this show.
I really enjoy this show and look forward to it every Tuesday. Please do not cancel the show!
I actually like the Show and enjoy watching it every week. I hope they keep it alive. I do not want it turned off.
This show is actually really horrible, I don’t know why I’m still watching it. Horrible acting, predictable plot and one dimensional characters. Who writes this crap anyway? Bit seems like the writers who wrote the first 2-3 episodes were canned and replaced by housewives from the mid-west (no offense!). With all those ships waiting in the wings why doesn’t Anna just take over earth and enslave the humans and use them for breeding? There is no reason for the silliness she is doing now. Why doesn’t agent Evans just tell Tyler that the v’s are evil? I think she has… Read more »
Ill be devestated if they don’t give a third season, love this show it has me hooked. The writting is great, great characters, and very suspensful:) please advertise more!
This show is definitely HOT HOT HOT! The characters are great especially Anna (amazingly devious lil witch), Lisa is awesome (especially the cat scratching with her mother), Hobbs is exceptional ( love the accent) Laura is solid, Josh is so sultry-yummy! The story is good and moving right along–finally,,, I like the tempo of the second season. Chad is so fraken adorable….. The weakest part of the story is the Queen bee from beyond this century—its no surprise she’ dwelling in the sewers no doubt with others who need an acting class or two. Otherwise, the show is Excellent! love… Read more »
