The aliens came and, despite some ratings challenges, they are staying — for at least one more season. ABC has renewed the V TV show for a second season.
Like the original, the new V revolves around the arrival of aliens to the planet Earth. While the visitors profess that they’ve come in peace, their ulterior motives slowly become clear. The cast includes Elizabeth Mitchell, Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Logan Huffman, Lourdes Benedicto, Laura Vandervoort, and Scott Wolf.
The series got off to a strong start in November with a 5.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 14.3 million total viewers. At the time, it was the highest rated debut of the 2009-10 season. Unfortunately, a large percentage of those viewers didn’t return for the second week. Episode two brought in a 3.8 rating and 10.7 million.
Week three dropped yet again, to a 3.1 in the demo and 9.26 million viewers. Thankfully, the ratings decline evened off from there. Unfortunately, due to some backstage issues, ABC put the show on hiatus for several months.

When V returned, the show’s ratings were understandably lower than they had been. Still, the drop could have been far worse than it was — attracting a 2.8 in the demo and 7.03 million viewers. The numbers later slipped to a low of a 1.9 rating and 4.87 million.
But now, in the final weeks of the season, V is starting to show a little growth. Last week’s brought a 2.1 and 5.37 million. This week attracted a 2.3 and 5.69 million. These increases seem to mirror the growth in its lead-in’s viewership (Lost) but they are increases nonetheless.
While it would seem that ABC should realistically cancel V, the network has a tradition of showing some faith in one or two struggling programs each year. It would seem that V is one of those shows. According to executive producer Scott Rosenbaum, ABC has renewed V for a second season of 13 episodes.
Will this gamble pay off? ABC has had mixed results in the past. Samantha Who? didn’t work out while Castle has grown nicely. With an ongoing sci-fi storyline, V isn’t exactly the type of show that’s inviting to new viewers. Perhaps the network has a plan. Time will tell.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear that V has been renewed for season two? Are you surprised? What would you do to boost viewership?

Me and ALL my friends LOVE V! Please bring back season 3! It WILL catch on!
I might not get this 100% right but I will try: Nofanofsuck: 1) I think the plan was to make it look like the kidnappers killed Anna, not have Lisa blatantly kill her leading to her involvement being found out. This is why they had to have Anna snuffed out in the wharehouse where nobody saw anything. Of course all that went to crap anyway lol. 2) They had to come up with the plan at the last minute because Dianna rushed them, remember? And therefore the plan would have holes in it. LOL @ Chad being ousted by simple… Read more »
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!! I’m a great fan, please do not cancel!
Love the show, please do not cancel.. So many shows just end and never come back and with no warning, Joel Gretsch was in the “4400” and it just stopped and Vegas just stopped. PLEASE KEEP V GOING.
I believe it’s a very nice show compared with some others that really suck big time…I love the show and i think it deserves a 3d season!
I really love this show and hope it doesn’t get cancelled. It still frustrates me that Terminator: The Sara Connor chronicles was cancelled with no ending. Please ABC if you cancel this show, atleast come out with a straight to DVD movie with the ending of this series.
this new season should come on air sooner than the last season. the rating wil drop if you keep the viewer waiting too long. they forget what happened and look for something new to watch.
I loved the original series and the new series gives a modern twist to the old series. I enjoyed season 1 and season 2. I hope there will be a season 3 in the near future, erica has to be given he right to get even with the v commander.
There was a time when tv networks would come out with new shows in the fall, and run it for the whole season – September through April or May. Then, we had the opportunity to watch the shows we missed in the summer. We, as viewers could look forward to new, great shows and not have interruptions in the schedule for months. Ratings, I believe are based on continually being able to watch our favorite show, characters on a weekly basis, growing, crying, laughing, whatever the case may be until the finale with the show. Having to watch 6 to… Read more »
I didn’t get the season fanale last nite it didn’t tape on my dvr for some reason. How can I get the last show to see?
@Bonie: For some reason, V isn’t legally streamed online like other shows. I think it has to do with the studio.
Co 2 My house
In Minnesota we can watch the show on fancast.com. It usually takes a few days to get on there but keep checking. Good luck
@Rick: Interesting. I’m in LA and don’t see V on Fancast at all.
I didn’t want the ORIGINAL series, but was hooked on this when it first came out. I have watched it ALL faithfully and seriously hope last night was a SEASON end, not a SERIES end. They can do so much more! And to NoFanOf Suck, if you hated it that much, don’t watch it!! Seriously!
Bring on season 3 love the drama on show fun to watch !!
they need to cancel this travesty. Its been going lightspeed on a teadmill the entire season. And the season finale was just pure garbage for multiple reasons. I’ll list them for all the fanboys out there. Spoilers ahead… 1. Why the hell did they need to pretend to kidnap Lisa if the plan was for Lisa to kill Anna. Lisa has access to the ship as well as weapons considering shes the one who smuggled the immolation gun. I knew this plan would fail from the start considering all of the Fifth columns plans fail. 2. What kind of assassination… Read more »
I loved the finale, as i love the series, but dude, you’re so right. Damn..
I was hooked watching as I am a sci fi shows. too much didnt make sence to me either. 1) 5th column members continued to betray the cause everytime a loved one was threatened, but they were surprised Lisa didnt kill Ana. 2) After everything she saw, Lisa thought her mother suddenly loved her? 3) If your mother tells you dangerous aliens are pretending to be your, you want to confront the queens daughter on the ship? what an idiot. 4) Ana could see Lisa’s reflection in the mirror, but Lisa couldnt see Ana’s? 5) half alien half human child… Read more »
So right!
I started watching V on a religious basis for a good two months now. I was very unhappy to see the season 2 come to an end. I would seriously look forward to Tuesdays nights at 9pm, rushing home from college so I wouldn’t miss a thing! The story line seemed to get better and better through each episode. The ending of season 2 was a perfect teaser for season 3. This would be a series I would continue to watch.
Please bring back V for season 3!
If it ends with season 2, you can also thank Mr. Bud Adams (Owner of Tennessee Titans.) He landed channel 2 into a contract to do his STUPID football “Titan’s on 2” show at the same time V was to premier and air. He refused to allow his idiotic show to be bumped to a different time slot. As a result, the cable companies did not program their scheduling for this, meaning everyone in the state of Tn and in KY were unable to DVR the show for the entire first season. If they wanted to watch V they had… Read more »
