The aliens came and, despite some ratings challenges, they are staying — for at least one more season. ABC has renewed the V TV show for a second season.
Like the original, the new V revolves around the arrival of aliens to the planet Earth. While the visitors profess that they’ve come in peace, their ulterior motives slowly become clear. The cast includes Elizabeth Mitchell, Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Logan Huffman, Lourdes Benedicto, Laura Vandervoort, and Scott Wolf.
The series got off to a strong start in November with a 5.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 14.3 million total viewers. At the time, it was the highest rated debut of the 2009-10 season. Unfortunately, a large percentage of those viewers didn’t return for the second week. Episode two brought in a 3.8 rating and 10.7 million.
Week three dropped yet again, to a 3.1 in the demo and 9.26 million viewers. Thankfully, the ratings decline evened off from there. Unfortunately, due to some backstage issues, ABC put the show on hiatus for several months.

When V returned, the show’s ratings were understandably lower than they had been. Still, the drop could have been far worse than it was — attracting a 2.8 in the demo and 7.03 million viewers. The numbers later slipped to a low of a 1.9 rating and 4.87 million.
But now, in the final weeks of the season, V is starting to show a little growth. Last week’s brought a 2.1 and 5.37 million. This week attracted a 2.3 and 5.69 million. These increases seem to mirror the growth in its lead-in’s viewership (Lost) but they are increases nonetheless.
While it would seem that ABC should realistically cancel V, the network has a tradition of showing some faith in one or two struggling programs each year. It would seem that V is one of those shows. According to executive producer Scott Rosenbaum, ABC has renewed V for a second season of 13 episodes.
Will this gamble pay off? ABC has had mixed results in the past. Samantha Who? didn’t work out while Castle has grown nicely. With an ongoing sci-fi storyline, V isn’t exactly the type of show that’s inviting to new viewers. Perhaps the network has a plan. Time will tell.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear that V has been renewed for season two? Are you surprised? What would you do to boost viewership?

I love V…amazing story line; amazing acting
Yes, V is renewed for second season . Very V of ABC . I love the series. I will continue to watch V on ABC! SO KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK SHOW CREATORS , YOU HAVE MY ATTENTION WITH SUPERIOR WRITING AND PLOT DEVELOPMENT.
V rules!
Yeah, it should continue, the potential is totally there. TV shows are always sketchy as mediums for telling stories. Each episode is like a cookie cutter chapter in a never ending story. TV shows whose episodes build on each other have to move the story along at a fair clip or viewers often won’t make it a priority to tune in. Unlike soaps, sci-fi stories aren’t always made to inspire empathy from viewers, and it’s the story not the characters that keep us engaged. I’ve noticed that occasionally a character will grow, discover, or act, but rarely do all three… Read more »
I cant wait for more. I love this show. Keep bringing it.
I absolutly love V, it’s the one thing I look forward to each week. I am really glad they renewed for a second season! They need to advertise for the show more and change the time that it starts to earlier then 9pm because i’m guessing it’s like it is for my mom, that their are more people out their that want to watch it but have to get up early for work so they have to go to bed before or at 9, especialy during the week.
I love this series. I would be quite displeased if V was taken off the air. It has an enjoyable air of mystery, decent pacing, with each end of an episode leading you closer to an answer you’ve been seeking, while at the same time leading you to a few more unanswered questions. The characters are dynamic, a few making moves you wouldn’t expect. The acting is top notch, allowing me to focus on the story rather then how things could have been done better, which quite honestly is a hard thing to do. The animation is well done, and… Read more »
V is a fresh spin on the original series. With the myriad of “reality” shows, cop dramas and other less than interesting series on the TV, V brings a something different to the livingroom.
It is a great show appealing to both new viewers not familiar with the original series and, well older folks like myself that loved watching the old series when I was a kid.
I hope that ABC has the good sense to let the audience build a following. I think the show will do well.
V is definitely in my opinion the best show on Tuesday evening.
If ABC cancels V after the second season, I can guarantee that ABC gets more fan backlash than HBO did after canceling “Carnivale” after 2 seasons.
V is a great show and getting better all the time. Hope they learned something from canceling Star Trek.
this is getting very interesting i love v
I think the show is awesome!!!! I hope it continues and becomes the new “Star Trek”.
They need to do some serious guerilla marketing for season 2 which can’t come soon enough!
V is my absolutely favorite show, and I’d be heart-broken if it was cancelled. We must get more viewers!
love the show V.-thanks for renewing it for a second season-i know this is fiction, but could easily come true-we are not alone-thanks again- John
I can’t say more than enough that v is my favorite show cuz. All thesecrime shows are old and boring that keep on repeating the same thong over and over with v though it brings something new and different to the table
