The aliens came and, despite some ratings challenges, they are staying — for at least one more season. ABC has renewed the V TV show for a second season.
Like the original, the new V revolves around the arrival of aliens to the planet Earth. While the visitors profess that they’ve come in peace, their ulterior motives slowly become clear. The cast includes Elizabeth Mitchell, Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Logan Huffman, Lourdes Benedicto, Laura Vandervoort, and Scott Wolf.
The series got off to a strong start in November with a 5.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 14.3 million total viewers. At the time, it was the highest rated debut of the 2009-10 season. Unfortunately, a large percentage of those viewers didn’t return for the second week. Episode two brought in a 3.8 rating and 10.7 million.
Week three dropped yet again, to a 3.1 in the demo and 9.26 million viewers. Thankfully, the ratings decline evened off from there. Unfortunately, due to some backstage issues, ABC put the show on hiatus for several months.

When V returned, the show’s ratings were understandably lower than they had been. Still, the drop could have been far worse than it was — attracting a 2.8 in the demo and 7.03 million viewers. The numbers later slipped to a low of a 1.9 rating and 4.87 million.
But now, in the final weeks of the season, V is starting to show a little growth. Last week’s brought a 2.1 and 5.37 million. This week attracted a 2.3 and 5.69 million. These increases seem to mirror the growth in its lead-in’s viewership (Lost) but they are increases nonetheless.
While it would seem that ABC should realistically cancel V, the network has a tradition of showing some faith in one or two struggling programs each year. It would seem that V is one of those shows. According to executive producer Scott Rosenbaum, ABC has renewed V for a second season of 13 episodes.
Will this gamble pay off? ABC has had mixed results in the past. Samantha Who? didn’t work out while Castle has grown nicely. With an ongoing sci-fi storyline, V isn’t exactly the type of show that’s inviting to new viewers. Perhaps the network has a plan. Time will tell.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear that V has been renewed for season two? Are you surprised? What would you do to boost viewership?

I am really glad V got a second season
Give it an ending. Want to see how it ends
Love it
V is great…..the whole family love it.
Yes I’m glad V renewed. I’m so sick of all the sports they have on TV and now draw porker. What a waste. It’s nice to see some good sci fi and some real intelligence in some weekly programs. At least their not throwing the ball back & forth.
Some people have no imagiation, just sin.
I hope that abc will not do what fox would take a good sci-fi show and at the end of a 2nd season shut it down like thay did with TTSCC.
I personally know a lot of people that were angry about the people involved in the show getting fired over “anti obama sentiment” It almost turned me off to the show as well (freedom of speech is important to me). But I really liked this show so I stuck around.
This show is fabulous and I am so glad they have renewed it for another season. With that cliffhanger ending, I don’t think I could stand it if they didn’t bring back this show. The characters are great and the parallels between the show and what’s going on in the world make it addicting. I love Father Jack standing up for what he believes and Erica fighting for freedom. Great show, please keep it around.
I have really got into the new series of V, I watched the original series as a kid and this is a cracking re-make, Anna is evil and sly yet still ooze’s a sexy side, and as for Anna’s daughter played by Laura Vandervoort well she is “HOT ” and Erica Evans played by Elizabeth Mitchell well she is one good looking Lady, I can’t wait for series 2 as I have now got to fill the slot on Tuesday evening on SYFY channel with something else now 🙁 keep this show running ABC its great and more of you… Read more »
If only the networks would be consistant with when they air shows, they would realise we humans are creatures of routine! We love tuning in each week to see our favourite new shows, but when they chop and change when they are aired we get bored and move on, so no wonder the ratings are all over the place.
ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE!

Is there a release date for the 2009-2010 V series onto dvd ?
@bill: Not yet. Probably in the fall.
LOVE V
Although I have been a fan of the original series I looked forward to the new series with trepidation. And it was justified. There are gaping plot holes (why on earth, if confronted with a Visitor, would you not ask him where he comes from, what langauge they speak, system of government, what he looks like, etc. Youn know, the usual IPB stuff?). I am glad to hear Flash Forward was cancelled and I hope they devote their energies to rescuing V plotwise. Love the characters, love Hobbes (British!!! Love It). Get the story arcs straight and fill the holes.… Read more »
Hobbes is Australian mate.
