TV show description:
Carli Mitchell (Melissa Peterman) is a single mother from a rough-and-tumble background. She tries to give her kids a better life by moving them to an upscale suburb but things don’t go as she expected. She quickly finds that making the transition to “the good life” is harder than she thought.
Her only career opportunity is at the deli of the local grocery store, working alongside her cranky neighbor Hank (Ed Asner). He’s a butcher and always seems to find a way to interfere and offer annoying advice both at work and at home. Things aren’t made any easier for Carli by the fact that her boss is Rob Parker (Patrick Fabian), a man that she falls for. He has an Ivy League education and finds his straight-laced world upended by Carli’s unconventional outlook and offbeat charms. Carli’s only problem is that he already has a girlfriend.
At home, Carli gets “help” from her brother, Nick (Steve Kazee). He’s allowed to crash with his big sis in exchange for helping with the kids. His laid-back attitude and his dating misadventures often confirm that he’s the biggest kid in the house.
As if that wasn’t enough, Carli’s three children can sometimes be more than she can handle. Scott (Lachlan Buchanan) is her athletic, hunky but clueless oldest son, who always mistakenly thinks he’s two steps ahead of his savvy mom. Pam (Courtney Merritt) is the brainy middle child who hides her insecurities behind her wry sense of humor. Will (Cameron Castaneda), Carli’s adorable six-year-old, is caught between his mom wanting him to stay her little baby boy and his uncle teaching him how to “man up.”
Episode 12 — Hire Education
Carli accepts an “employee of the month” award from Parker Foods and recalls when she got the job. Her family is adapting to their new home, grumpy neighbor, and school. Scott gets a ride to school from his new girlfriend while Pam is having a hard time making friends. Hank is upset because Nick spent the night on his outdoor furniture.
Carli is interviewed by Mr. Parker (guest star Martin Mull) and, despite her lack of experience, he gives her the job. She starts immediately and struggles with her new responsibilities She also sees Scott and his girlfriend skipping school and kissing in the store. After the girlfriend leaves, he tells Carli that he’s embarrassed about her new job. At home, she tells Scott how upset she is with him and grounds him.
Days later, Scott and his girlfriend come to the store to try to convince Carli to let Scott attend a party. When Carli wants to call the girl’s parents, she acts snobbishly and Scott tells her off. Carli is a proud parent which, of course, embarrasses her son.
Later, before dinner, Pam tells the family that she joked with a boy in math class. Scott says that he’s proud of Carli for getting her new job. Meanwhile, Nick helped Will with his family tree, when he wasn’t sleeping through his college classes.
First aired: April 1, 2011.
