What will she decide? Fans have been wondering that about Elena Gilbert since The Vampire Diaries TV show premiered on September 10, 2009. Now The CW production is asking the same question about her alter-ego, actress Nina Dobrev, who left the long-running supernatural drama after its sixth season. Will Julie Plec and company be able to convince Dobrev to return for the eighth and final season of The Vampire Diaries? The show has not been the same since Elena was written into a mystical coma, to facilitate the star’s exit.
At The CW’s TCA summer press session, CW President Mark Pedowitz said discussions are ongoing to woo Dobrev back to Mystic Falls, for the fang gang’s final run. Per Deadline, he said, “We would love to have her — she was great and integral to the show’s success.” Reporter Nellie Andreeva adds, “I hear talks have been difficult. Pedowitz alluded to that, noting, ‘Should it not work out, Julie has a great series finale planned for the fans’.” The series stars Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley.
According to the report, The CW boss also addressed how the decision was made to end The Vampire Diaries after the upcoming season eight. “(WBTV president) Peter Roth, Julie and I, we collective came to the same place — actually Julie got there before Peter and I did — that this was the right time to end the series.”
When Dobrev originally left after season six, the idea was to bring her back for The Vampire Diaries TV series finale. From the Deadline report, it sounds as though the show is trying to get Dobrev back in a much larger capacity.
The Vampire Diaries spoilers that broke last month mentioned a new character, named Sybil. We won’t spoil the details on this page. If you want them, go here. At the time there was much fan speculation that Dobrev would be brought on as that character during the regular season, and perhaps only play Elena in the series finale.
It would not be the first time Dobrev played another character on the drama. She played doppelgänger villain Katherine Pierce in upwards of 45 episodes, as well as another doppelgänger Amara in a handful. She also appeared on TVD spin-off The Originals as yet another double, Tatia.
What do you think? Would you only accept Dobrev back as Elena, or would you be glad to have her back on TVD in any capacity? If you have already stopped watching, would you return to the show if she does? Tell us.
