Will A Gifted Man be cancelled or renewed for a second season? As the show winds down for 2011-12, that’s the big question for fans of the CBS TV series. In a recent interview, executive producer Neal Baer shared his thoughts but first, let’s look at the show’s ratings.
For those who came in late, A Gifted Man revolves around a self-absorbed and talented surgeon who starts questioning the purpose of his life when he’s visited by the spirit of his deceased ex-wife. The cast includes Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Ehle, Margo Martindale, Liam Aiken, Julie Benz, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, Eriq La Salle, and Mike Doyle.
The series debuted back in September to a disappointing 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.45 million total viewers. The premiere matched now-cancelled Medium’s 2010 opener in the demo but did improve in total viewership. Week two saw Gifted Man drop to a 1.2 in the demo and 8.18 million. The numbers stayed at those levels for several weeks but then perked up to a 1.3 in the demo.
The season to date has a 1.3 average and 8.34 million total viewers. It’s easily the network’s weakest drama — in both the demo and total viewership — even when the Friday night timelot is taken into account. Medium was cancelled with a 1.4 demo average. With an abundance of stronger programming, A Gifted Man is certain to be cancelled after all 16 episodes have aired.
In speaking with TV Guide, Baer however remains optimistic and shared, “[CBS] really likes the show, and we haven’t talked about the future at all except trying to just do great episodes… They’re very supportive of the show and I know they really like it, so we’re very hopeful about coming back in the fall.”
Because Baer and company are betting that the show won’t be cancelled, some storylines will be left unresolved in the season finale. Baer noted, “There’s plenty to hope for and wonder about… There are definitely questions about what will happen in relationships in the future.”
What do you think? Do you think that A Gifted Man should be cancelled or renewed for season two? Should the storylines have been wrapped up in the season (likely series) finale?

Please don’t cancel this show. The storyline and acting are consistent every week and the idea of being left hanging regarding what’s going to happen with Kate and Michael is very disappointing. I love this show and have watched it every week since its inception. It would be a crime to cancel.
I love the storyline and hope the show won’t be cancelled. Sometimes they cancel shows without giving them a chance to succeed. I hope they won’t make that mistake with this show.
I absolutely love this show! RENEW please. The episode where Michael helps Zeke play the drums was hot and literally rocked. Just a reminder to live your life now and not put off until tomorrow. I love all of the characters and literally can’t wait until Friday night. This past Friday was nearly in mourning because it wasn’t on. CBS, we need more great shows like this one.
I looked forward to this show every Friday night. It was well done and I looked forward to the following week. If the ratings were low, maybe it is because it is on a Friday night when a lot of people are out. I would love to see this show continued. Thanks
Please do not cancel. It seems every show we like gets taken off. We really like the show.
why can’t we keep a show with a great sense of hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE DON’T CANCEL THE SHOW !!! Love it
NO!!!!!! Don’t cancel the show – it’s great!!! Maybe it needs a different night than Friday!!!
I have really enjoyed watching A Gifted Man. It quickly became one of my favorite shows. A Gifted Man combined with Blue Bloods makes for a wonderful Friday night line up and with DVR’s I don’t have to stay home on Fridays to enjoy them. I hope CBS renews AGifted Man and brings Michael Holt back to TV for another season.
Don’t cancel the show! It’s well crafted, and the characters are being developed beautifully, changing slowly -like most mortals. Give it a chance! It’s an interesting, novel concept that is being explored very artfully.
PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THIS SHOW! I love it so much and is so refreshing to see a show that is not all about violence nad constant killings! Please bring it back , I was so disappointed that it was not on this past Friday night. Please bring it back.
I LOVE the show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All the above comments – I agree – Megs is amazing – didn’t think she could make change from evil to good – she does – a good show – upbeat – feel good after watching – I know reality shows tend to be cheaper but – boring – don’t let this show go
Don’t Cancel The Show. Give it another chance. All the characters play their parts so well. There’s so much human interest going on there. I absolutely love the show. The season’s finale wasn’t really final. It left me longing for more.
This show is brilliant!! Why do they have to cancel it? 🙁 I bet they don’t take into account the people who watch TV online, like 90% of 18-25 year olds.
Hi from Argentina, please don’t cancel!
