Will A Gifted Man be cancelled or renewed for a second season? As the show winds down for 2011-12, that’s the big question for fans of the CBS TV series. In a recent interview, executive producer Neal Baer shared his thoughts but first, let’s look at the show’s ratings.
For those who came in late, A Gifted Man revolves around a self-absorbed and talented surgeon who starts questioning the purpose of his life when he’s visited by the spirit of his deceased ex-wife. The cast includes Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Ehle, Margo Martindale, Liam Aiken, Julie Benz, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, Eriq La Salle, and Mike Doyle.
The series debuted back in September to a disappointing 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.45 million total viewers. The premiere matched now-cancelled Medium’s 2010 opener in the demo but did improve in total viewership. Week two saw Gifted Man drop to a 1.2 in the demo and 8.18 million. The numbers stayed at those levels for several weeks but then perked up to a 1.3 in the demo.
The season to date has a 1.3 average and 8.34 million total viewers. It’s easily the network’s weakest drama — in both the demo and total viewership — even when the Friday night timelot is taken into account. Medium was cancelled with a 1.4 demo average. With an abundance of stronger programming, A Gifted Man is certain to be cancelled after all 16 episodes have aired.
In speaking with TV Guide, Baer however remains optimistic and shared, “[CBS] really likes the show, and we haven’t talked about the future at all except trying to just do great episodes… They’re very supportive of the show and I know they really like it, so we’re very hopeful about coming back in the fall.”
Because Baer and company are betting that the show won’t be cancelled, some storylines will be left unresolved in the season finale. Baer noted, “There’s plenty to hope for and wonder about… There are definitely questions about what will happen in relationships in the future.”
What do you think? Do you think that A Gifted Man should be cancelled or renewed for season two? Should the storylines have been wrapped up in the season (likely series) finale?

cut thise silly sitcomes and bring Gifted Man back. Frieday nights are my night to watch my favorite dranas . who makes thses silly decisions.
Please do not disappoint all the people who love The Gifted Man. you can get ried of the undercover Boss. that is boring, give The Gifted Man that slot. I don’t know who determines what shows to keep and what to cancel, but they keep all the lousy shows and get rid of really good ones like Gifted Man
I hope this show survives the cut as it is one of the few new shows that I really enjoy watching….it is always scary to get interested in a new show, to really like it, only to have it cancelled, while for some reason, some really stupid shows make the cut!
Where is “A Gifted Man” ? First, it was changed from 8 PM to 9 Pm which did not make me happy ( I get up at 4:30 AM to go to work and get home about 7 PM) so it is a real stretch for me to manage to stay up to watch the show and “Blue Bloods” both of which I think are really good shows. They actually have a plot and are entertaining with some good actors as opposed to the mindless reality shows, game shows, talk shows, dancing shows and “March Madness” and other sports shows… Read more »
Please do not cancel I want this show to stay we need more like it
Refreshing, different, loved the rich surgeon helping the community poor. PLEASE do not cancel!
Please do not cancel this show. I love the show. As a nurse, I find the factual information is educational and much more accurate than most medical dramas. Michael is gorgeous. The women in his life are beautiful. I look forward to it every Friday. I did like Medium also but that was cancelled. The gifted man is much more scientific based and medically current with great acting. It is new and fresh. It would be a real loss to cancel it.
I totally love this show, it is nice to see a clean show that your whole family can watch together… I think a lot of people haven’t seen nor heard of it. I switched to it by accident and have been hooked ever since, they need to get it out there advertise it and then give it a chance! Great show great actors and great story!
Please do not cancel this show. It is so refreshing to watch a different type of show like this instead of all the cop shows on the air. And we all know there are too many of those. Great acting and great storyline.
Love the show a most people I talk to love the show, why cancel a good thing, too clean for some maybe?Great acting, would love to see it next year.
I love A Gifted Man and I want it to continue next fall. Very good acting and interesting plot, although I could do with less of the dead ex-wife. Let her die in peace and get on with the really good story of medicine, solving problems for both rich and poor.
Put it in a time slot where it has a chance. Grays Anatomy probably won’t continue, so we need a new medical show.
So, please don’t cancel. Margo Mann
I love this show and looked forward to it every Friday night. I like very few shows and this is a favorite for me.

“A Gifted Man” has depth, character, is informative, the cast members are all suited to their roles, etc., etc,. I would like to see more of the deceased wife though.
Compared to Grey’s Anatomy (shallow) or House (his rudeness is not at all appealing), “A Gifted Man” is like comparing the best champaigne to tap water!
Keep A Gifted Man – cancel Gray’s Anatomy & House.
Do not cancel this show…..as some have said before it is very refreshing. One of my favorites.
Please don’t cancel this show, my family loves it. It has good story lines and the characters in it are great.
Please don’t cancel thuis show! We love its refreshing characters and their lost love, but not foregone, for eachother.
please do not cancel this show. I love the way Anna humanizes Michael, even from death. He is brilliant but somewhat unhuman.
Please don’t canel this show! We Love its refreshing characters and story of lost but not foregone love of Dr. Holt and his wife.
