ABC launched just five new scripted TV series during the regular portion of the 2019-20 season. They cancelled three and renewed two. That’s far fewer shows than the previous season and now, because of production delays caused by COVID-19, the 2020-21 season will be like none other. How will the alphabet network TV shows perform in the ratings? Stay tuned!
ABC shows (so far): 20/20, America’s Funniest Home Videos, American Housewife, American Idol, The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise, Big Sky, Black-ish, Call Your Mother, The Conners, Card Sharks, Celebrity Family Feud, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, The Chase, The Con, Dancing with the Stars, Emergency Call, For Life, The Goldbergs, The Good Doctor, The Great Christmas Light Fight, Grey’s Anatomy, Home Economics, The Hustler, Match Game, A Million Little Things, Mixed-ish, Press Your Luck, Rebel, The Rookie, Shark Tank, Soul of a Nation, Station 19, Supermarket Sweep, To Tell The Truth, The Ultimate Surfer, When Nature Calls with Helen Mirren, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
There’s lots of data that network execs look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are the major ingredient. These charts will be updated daily, as new ratings data becomes available.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Older viewers also matter but younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach. Delayed viewing matters more and more these days (if commercials are watched) but live viewing is still advertisers’ ideal.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Are you surprised by any of the ratings? Which shows should be doing better? Which one do you think will be cancelled next?
Why was Rebel cancelled? It had more viewers then the renewed shows. Cancel the view!!!! After disrespecting American Flag! And the people who proudly display our flag!!!
I’ve watched “The Bachelor” franchise since the beginning. I (among many others) will not be watching the show again nor support the sponsors until CHRIS HARRISON is back as the host. thank you.
Wish Rebel wasn’t being canceled. It’s actually a decent show and I very rarely watch ABC.
Some links are broken on some of your network pages like this one. I can’t click on A Million Little things for example
Do not Cancel A Million Little Things! Love that show! Get Eddy and Dehlila back love Katherine with new guy. Need Gary with Maggie. Love his new girlfriend but need more Maggie! Loved season 3. Love all of the actors! New season please! Season 4!!!!!!!!
Please renewal Station 19. I love station 19. Renewal The Rookie, Rebel, Debris, For Life, A million little Things,
ABC barely exists up here in Minnesota. I never watch it. It’s not popular as a news source. ABC who?
Agreed don’t care for news update ridiculous stuff going on no interest in the world tired of it hate on negativity. Trends my mind. Love shows better than everything out there.
The Goldbergs and The good doctor please boost your ratings so funny and enjoy it medical drama look forward every episode never missed any episodes.
The # of reality and game shows are out of hand. Why can’t we get or keep good TV shows? The reality we all have lived through the last 13 months, if we are one of the lucky ones, has been a nightmare. Why on earth do we want to see girls in their itty-bitty bikinis kissing 30 guys, or sand up their crotch while eating cockroaches? We have Mixed-ish, Black-ish and Grown-ish…..Oooo-K? Grey’s is leaving, I’m sure Station 19 is next. Splitting Up Together was a great show but that was cancelled and most likely a game show or… Read more »
They are cancelled because moron tv viewers don’t watch scripted in large numbers anymore but sadly they keep tuning into reality and game shows. I’m not sure if people have attention disorders or if the quality of scripted has lessen over the years. But this is why networks cancel shows, they need EYEBALLS and lots of them to keep a show going year after year. Also Grey’s is not leaving yet nor is Station 19, both are expected to return. I agree with you, Theresa but apparently the majority of viewers don’t like scripted these days.
RIP George Segal such a great actor first time saw this sitcom. I love him so funny character true great person real life. Please boost your ratings look forward never missed it every episode.
Renewed: Station 19, Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Doctor, The Connors, The Goldbergs, The Rookie, A Million Little Things, American Housewife.
Cancelled: Big Sky, Call Your Mother, Black-ish, Mixed-ish, For Life
Big Sky will be renewed … also FYI it’s CONNERS not Connors, thank you! Black-ish will be renewed for a farewell season.
Grey’s and Station 19 can go!
ABC needs to fulfill its agreement and bring Stumptown back for its second season that it was promised before Covid-19 caused ABC to renege on its renewal.
Greys Anatomy – having Ellen Pompeo in a comatose state week after week does not help!
That was all because of Ellen, had nothing to do with ABC or the writers of the show. Hopefully Ellen will be feeling more comfortable returning to set for season 18.
The Good Doctor boost ratings so good enjoy it. Look Forward every episode enjoy it never missed it. Bull, NCIS Los Angeles, Macgver, Seal team, Call me Kat so good these shows love it.
What is appealing to you about Call ME Kat? I’m not being sassy, I’m genuinely interested to hear what draws you in about the show? thank you!
Call me Kat is different, which is refreshing, and all around Cute. I think it’s funny too.
Absolutely LOVE The Hustler! Needs more advertising to get more viewers. PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL . It’s a novel idea. Nothing close to it on any channel. Perhaps putting it in a more advantageous time slot for a week or two would draw more viewers. Love Craig Ferguson as the host. I miss the show. Looked forward to it each week.
i know it’s been three or four years since the series Grimm been on but it would be wonderful if the show were return to ABC because I’VE all was thought the show ended way to soon and if the show Grimm should ever return to ABC i hope they would all so end up doing a spin off as well and i would want Nick and Adalind to get married and i hope most of the cast could return and have the show pick up were the show left off at..
Note: GRIMM ran on NBC for multiple seasons, not ABC.
