CBS has long had a problem finding the right sitcom to round out their Monday night line-up. Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, and The Big Bang Theory work well but the network needs a solid fourth player. As this season began, it looked like Accidentally on Purpose just might be the one. No longer. It’s been cancelled.
Accidentally on Purpose revolves around thirty-something Billie Chase (Jenna Elfman) after she breaks up with her boyfriend/boss (Grant Show). She has a one-night fling with a much younger man, Zack (Jon Foster), and becomes pregnant. Billie ultimately decides to keep both the baby and the guy. The series also features Lennon Parham, Nicolas Wright, Ashley Jensen, and Pooch Hall.
The TV show got off to a pretty good start with a 3.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 8.91 million viewers. On Monday nights, the first 15 episodes ended up averaging a 3.1 in the demo and 8.23 million viewers. That’s actually quite good but the network has very high expectations because the TV show is surrounded by their very popular comedies. The real test is to see how well the series will perform on another night.
After a hiatus, CBS brought Accidentally on Purpose to Wednesday nights. With The New Adventures of Old Christine as a lead-in, the ratings fell like a rock. The three original episodes averaged a 1.8 in the key demo and 5.72 million viewers. If there was any hope for the series, these numbers dashed them.
CBS has now confirmed that the sitcom has been cancelled and will not be returning for season two. CBS can afford to be picky in what sitcoms it keeps and has also cancelled Gary Unmarried after two seasons and Old Christine after five.
Fortunately, the network aired all 18 episodes of Accidentally on Purpose and viewers got to see Billie give birth. Unfortunately, they won’t get to see how she and Zack cope as new parents.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Accidentally on Purpose has been cancelled or did CBS make the right choice?

Not happy about this and the fact they cancelled Gary unmarried just makes it worse. that was my favorite station and I still watch Monday nights line up but I’m not happy. Fix this CBS
This show was funny, I was hoping to see what became of Zack and Billie. I don’t understand why networks need to be so damn picky with shows these days. Not all of them are going to have through the roof ratings the first season. Give shows a chance Friends didn’t even get really popular til it’s 3rd or 4th season and that was one of the most popular shows of the 90s and early 2000s!
I wish they hadn’t canceled this show! It’s not often I watch this type of show but this one caught my interest and I was hooked. I was wondering why it was I couldn’t find it at one point, must have been when they switched it to Wednesdays. Wish they would reconsider and bring it back, I was looking forward to seeing what happened in season two.
CBS and NBC always cancel good shows it pisses me off. NBC did the same thing to Freaks and Geeks 10 years ago and that pissed a lot of people off.
Agreed. NBC is a huge offender of canceling great shows and sticking with horrible ones.
My husband and I are so upset to hear that Accidently on Purpose is cancelled. I hope that CBS changes their mind. I really loved that show.
I think it sucks! The show rocked and I’m so sad that it’s been cancelled!
Man that sucks. I was looking forward to season 2. One of our favorite shows!
My husband and I are sooooooooooooooooo disappointed. We were so looking forward to this next season with the baby!!!!!!!! Jenny Elfman was so great in this and her young baby Daddy was irresistable. We loved her sister and Zach’s best friend too! What a total shame. Is it possible season two could be on a different network? We laughed outloud each episode and couldn’t get enough of it. Whomever made this bad decision is out of touch with what the public thinks! We are so disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!
The show was awesome and a total shame that it won’t be on! I was really looking forward to this season!
I really loved this sitcom. I have never laughed so hard since will and grace and they cancelled such a nice show
This sucks!! I can’t believe this show got cancelled!!! So upset! Too bad another channel of CBS’ couldn’t pick it up! I was excited to see season 2!
I love that show !!! I can’t believe they just cancelled the show so easily…. I wish some other channel picks the show up and makes another season cause I would watch it !!!
this show was amazing!! so new and funny, I was always laughing. They should really give it another shot, give it time to catch on and spread!
A real shame they have cancelled the show. I thought it was funny and fresh in a very ‘Big Bang Theory’ style. I wish there were more shows out there like this that make you actually laugh out loud.
Man, that sucks…I was so looking forward to see the next season, see how Billi and Zack “try” to be parents etc. I just loved the cast of the show. A real pitty it got cancelled. I don’t understand that strategie, though…moving a quite succesful show to another slot just to see if people can find it there, too?? What’s that all about, of course nobody wants to watch this pain-in-the-ass-Old Christine, so why wreck a good show like that? I don’ get it…
