As expected, NBC has decided not to move forward with a second season of AD: The Bible Continues. The 12 episode mini-series wrapped on June 21st and has now been cancelled.
Produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, AD: The Bible Continues tells the tale of the later chapters of biblical history (following the Crucifixion of Christ). It focuses on the disciples who had to go forward and spread the teachings of Jesus Christ to a world dominated by political unrest. The cast includes Juan Pablo Di Pace, Adam Levy, Richard Coyle, Vincent Regan, Greta Scacchi, Babou Ceesay, Chipo Chung, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jodhi May, Joanne Whalley, Ken Bones, Kevin Doyle, Helen Daniels, and Fraser Ayers.
The series debuted on April 5th to a respectable 2.33 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.68 million viewers. Unfortunately, the ratings saw severe drops in the weeks that followed. The finale hit a series low with a 0.7 demo and 3.56 million.
Though NBC doesn’t want a second season, the story isn’t over. Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have said that their writers have been working on scripting season two for some time.
Now that NBC has cancelled the show, the producers see it as a tentpole for the launch of OTT. They have been working on the online channel since partnering with MGM to form United Artists Media Group last fall. The online channel is envisioned as a base for faith and religion-based content but won’t be launched until 2016 or 2017.
The castmembers of AD are being released from their contracts because the next incarnation won’t be filmed for awhile. As a result, there may be some recasting when production resumes.
What do you think? Should NBC have cancelled this show? Will you watch the next season online when it becomes available or prefer to watch on DVDs. Would you pay to watch this kind of programming?
I have looked forward to watching this series each week. I have appreciated NBC carrying this show and would like to see them continue Season 2 of A.D. the Bible Continues. The acting has been excellent.
This is the first series that my husband has been disappointed in the fact that it has not been renewed. I am sad as well. It made the scriptures come alive. I will watch this on any other network. It made a difference in our lives
I am not surprised and no Christian should be. Since when has Satan joined our belief in our Yeshua! Trust God has made Messianic believers who can bring the bible to life. David Hocking, Zola Levitt, Johnathan Bernis and many more can reached on YouTube, his channel, and of course radio. God has a vase number of ways to reach us all. May God bless all of us. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
This was a great series. Once again NBC blows it!!
Hope one of the cable channels picks it up. NBC
is sure living up to it’s “Nothing But Clowns” network.
as a person who watched touched by an angel and prosed la I found this very interesting but because A.D. as religious it got canceled. how wrong take some of th retarted reality ws off and put more inspirational shows on. wow!!!!!! A.D. got a raw deal
I will watch AD anywhere it winds up at.
This program has the potential to change lives!!!
why am I not surprised. It seems all quality shows are cancelled. There is so much junk on TV that should be cancelled but they pick a show with a message to cancel. Very disappointed
I am very disappointed. Trying to take the message and the word of God off of T.V
I found AD fascinating. Watching the New Testament come to life. I will watch it online!!
I am so disappointed that AD The Bible Continues will not have season 2 aired on NBC. I will be watching for the release elsewhere…such a shame.
I am disappointed but hate that it was on NBC anyway. I watch this with my 5 and 8 year old and the commercials in between were sometimes very much not appropriate for the audience who may be watching a show like this. In fact, they sometimes had traditional swearing, etc. My kids were afraid of a few commercials and told me bad words were said. Bye bye NBC, the success of the show will be made elsewhere. While we might have to wait, we will be better off. BTW, you could have really stayed at the forefront of an… Read more »
I am so disappointed that A.D. the Bible Continues was not picked up by NBC
for a second season- not surprised though. There are very few quality primetime
shows on any of the networks. I would pay to see a second season.
But I would hate to miss out on Adam Levy’s performance as Peter- he was amazing!
Whoever pulled the plug is surely going to hell. Cancelling the show was the devils work!
I looooooved this series! I have been a Christ follower since I was a child (40 now;) and while I’ve read/heard about these people and situations from the bible and our history, I had no good imagery to go with it. I fully understand there was some added “flavor” for television but it has prompted me to read it all again and brought it to life in a different way for me! I can’t stop talking about it to people. All that said, I am saddened by the cliffhanger ending and will certainly watch a second season however it’s available.… Read more »
I will certainly watch this series when it comes back on, wherever it comes back on. I looked forward to it each week. Hated all the commercials but loved the series! Ending it the way you did was such a bummer and really reflected badly on NBC. We had people coming to our house on Sunday evenings to watch this with us, and really looked forward to it each week. I studied up on Roman history as well as Biblical history to understand the characters better. Which I agree, they did a great job acting! Wonderful cast.
I truly loved the passion of the actors involved, and I thought the entire show was first-rate, absolutely movie quality. My only complaint is when a show ends on a cliffhanger because they’re counting on a second season, and then it’s cancelled and we viewers are left without a conclusion. This complete story could have been told in the 10 episodes we had, but they s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d it out due to greed and now we’re left hanging. I wish these producers and whoever would stop trying to squeeze every last penny from a show by dragging out the story, thinking they… Read more »
What a huge mistake by NBC.
I loved this show, and I’m prepared to pay for the next season on DVD.
I’m so disappointed.
