FOX has released their new schedule for mid-season and Allen Gregory wasn’t on it. What does this mean? Has the animated series been cancelled?
Allen Gregory revolves around an arrogant and delusional seven-year-old, Allen Gregory De Longpre (Jonah Hill), who’s being raised by his persnickety father, Richard (French Stewart), and his father’s hunky life partner, Jeremy (Nat Faxon). Neither Allen Gregory nor his father are fond of adopted Cambodian daughter Julie (Joy Osmanski). Because of the recession, Allen Gregory is forced to start attending a public elementary school. He meets his best friend/personal servant Patrick (Christina Puccelli), his idol Joel (Jake Johnson), and his crush, the school’s senior citizen principal (Renée Taylor)
Following a slew of negative reviews, the series debuted on October 30th. It attracted a 2.4 in the 18-49 demographic with 4.77 million total viewers putting it in last place for its timeslot. The series tied with The Cleveland Show as FOX’s lowest-rated show of the night and was even out-performed by a repeat of The Simpsons. This certainly wasn’t an auspicious beginning. A year earlier in the same timeslot, an episode of The Cleveland Show performed 30% better.
Allen Gregory fell by nearly 13% in week two and still hasn’t stopped falling. This week’s installment fell an amazing 21% in the demo, hitting a new series low of a 1.5 in the demo and 3.18 million viewers. It currently ranks 12th out of 13 scripted shows on the network, beating only Fringe which airs on Friday nights. It has “D+” demo grade on the network report card and, the way things are going, it won’t take long for that grade to drop even lower.
FOX ordered just seven installments of Allen Gregory and, the way things have gone, they’re very likely glad they didn’t ask for any more. There are two episodes left to air and they’ll be finished airing by December 11th. The network could run repeats after that but may decide to run something else. New episodes of Allen Gregory have done so poorly that its hard to imagine that reruns wouldn’t do even worse.
FOX hasn’t officially cancelled Allen Gregory and has no reason to announce it if they did, at least until the show’s off the schedule. If they did, the ratings would only go down.
They’ve made no mention of putting new episodes into production — even though they ordered additional scripts way back in July. Animated shows need a longer lead time for production so FOX has often handed out very early renewals. Not so in this case.
In the end, it makes no sense for FOX to renew the Allen Gregory show for a second season. It’s performed very poorly and the network has plenty of better-performing animated fare.
But, what do you think? Do you like the series? Do you think it should it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?

I loved Allen Gregory!!!!! Bring it back 🙁 I was looking forward to it all day yesterday 12/11/2011 and then… The Cleveland Show??
Please keep the show my wife and I love it!!! We have it set to record each week so that we can let others that come over watch it!!! We deeply enjoy the show, so do our friends and family.
This show gave me a surprising amount of laughs. I find its fast paced conversations humorous and the father (the voice of that guy who plays the dean in Community) is friggen hilarious. I can see why people don’t like the show but in terms of crude humour, I’d say it’s pretty damn good. Allen Gregory seems like the type of show that shouldn’t overstay its welcome (only one season) but it would be great to get a completed season of 12-13 episodes. I think this show would have a larger audience if it became a web series where it… Read more »
Piece of crap show. I saw the first episode and hated it. Then I thought I’d give it another 3 tries. Also hated every episode after the first. There was NO character that could relate and it’s just filthy and disgusting. Not funny AT ALL. I’m glad FOX decided to get rid of it, nip it in the bud before it gets worse.
Tried watching it, but didn’t laugh. Tried again, didn’t laugh. Glad to see I’m not the only one and that I’m not out of touch with comedy. Don’t think it contained anything I could relate to. I’m not rich, not gay, didn’t understand the attraction to the principal, just found it gross. Good riddance! This is what happens when Hollywood hands out shows to everyone who’s in the spotlight for 15 minutes. How do shows like this end up on TV? Why can’t network execs tell funny and not funny? I can tell funny when I see it. Probably can’t… Read more »
The sorryest show I’ve ever seen
I’ve been waiting for this show to go off the air since the first episode. I have never seen a worse show.
I am a huge fan of this show and will be very sad if it doesn’t stay.
I loved this show. My heart sunk when I saw it wasn’t on tonight . I was looking forward to it so much. It was my new favorite show. This sucks. I wish they would renew it.
Good Riddance!! I hated this show! I still have 3 episodes on my dvr that I haven’t watched. I’ve actually liked a lot of the other shows that have been canceled like Sit Down, Shut Up. At least that had likeable characters and pretty good humor. Allen Gregory just didn’t catch on with me. I like the ideas surrounding it, pretentious narcissistic rich kid trying to fit into main stream public school and also parented by gay men, but the humor just wasn’t there… I think I might have chuckled once or twice but that’s about it. I could maybe… Read more »
Woohoo! Kill it with fire! I tried to give Allen Gregory a chance but it is just so boring! I’d rather have Bob’s Burgers back on the air.
It can’t go away fast enough, this show is awful.
Woo-hoo! Good riddance to this poor excuse for an animated sitcom!
I am a South Park fan and I despise this show. There absolutely is not any correlation between liking South Park, which is in fact witty and funny (if a bit less so this past season) and an opinion of the complete train wreck that is Allen Gregory. It’s like it was created for the purpose of teaching aspiring animated series writers everything they shouldn’t do and accidentally got submitted to FOX for consideration. It certainly doesn’t say much that FOX decided it was worth airing, they have been notorious for okaying garbage these past few years.
I LOVE Allen Gregory! And I know many others that LOVE it too!!! PLEASE RENEW IT and have SEASON 2 PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! People just need to catch on to it. If South Park can last as long as it has then there has got to be viewers out there that have not yet found the joy of ALLEN GREGORY!!!!!!!!!!
