There won’t be a second season of American Odyssey. To little surprise, NBC has cancelled the dramatic TV series after 13 episodes.
On the American Odyssey TV show, an international cover-up explodes when the lives of a female Special Forces soldier, a disillusioned corporate lawyer, and a political activist from a privileged family unexpectedly collide. The cast includes Anna Friel, Peter Facinelli, Jake Robinson, Jim True-Frost, Sadie Sink, Omar Ghazaoui, Nate Mooney, Elena Kampouris, Daniella Pineda, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Treat Williams.
The series had a lackluster debut and the ratings got much worse as the weeks progressed. The 13 installments ended up averaging a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with fewer than three million viewers. The finale aired this past Sunday.
Series creator Adam Armus tweeted, “Thanks to the devoted fans of #AmericanOdyssey. I loved the tweets, the artwork and the emotional support. #odellelives in our [heart]️ always!” and “#AmericanOdyssey is not renewed for next season. The stories live on in here [head] and in here [heart]️! [Bravo] to the fantastic cast, crew and the fans!”
Of the cancellation, executive producer Peter Horton tweeted, “As you all know we have bn canceled. Had we been on cable wld have bn a hit Thx to all of u for bing our audience #thebest #AmericanOdyssey” and then, “#AmericanOdyssey Heartbreaking. But you all have been the best. xo”
Actor Treat Williams wrote, “American Odyssey has been a great experience. Thank you Peter, Adam, Kay,and a lovely cast for a great season. Thank you NBC for the gig.”
What do you think? Did you like the American Odyssey TV show? If you ran the network, would you have cancelled it or renewed the series for a second season?
That sucks! They always cancel the good shows and keep the crap. I hope another network picks it up. America odyssey and tyrant are the best shows on tv!
This was the best show on NBC. I was looking forward to season 2. The only thing I didn’t like was the 10:00 PM air time.
Damn – I hate there’s no Season 2. I liked the characters. Any hope of DirecTv or Netflix saving it?
just lets me know not to start watching anything on NBC so I wont be disappointed. Other cable channels have the best shows. Your loss. I wish another network would pick this up.
American Odyssey was shown on BBC2 last Sunday, and both me and my husband thought it was really interesting and gripping. We were so looking foreward to all the other episodes. Now I read that this is to be the only season as they’ve cancelled it. I don’t understand why they didn’t at least give it a second season. I’m sure lots of other people must feel like us. I just hope they didn’t end it on a cliff hanger.
Not pleased that American odyssey has been cancelled. As for the 18-49 demographic…not sure why it matters…so many younger people do NOT watch regular TV — they watch On Demand and binge watch — this seems to be the norm.. Very sad state of affairs the way ratings are compiled. .
Oh too bad … wishing you all the best.
The Comment Thread prior to the cancellation seems to be partially deleted, but anyone who has been following the comments on this site are aware that over 90% of the posts praised the show and wanted it renewed. Most were critical and even angry at NBC for not committing to continuing the show. But no matter how enthusiastic the Fans were, there were actually very few fans. All TV networks are in business to make money, and American Odyssey obviously was losing money. No Audience, No Show. Why? The show just wasn’t very good. The plot was often absurd –… Read more »
Loved it so what a funny ending ????? Most of whats on TV is rubbish for brain dead people put something good on and they cut it. Stupid , .and 18 to 49 what’s that about? The most of the population that has the time to watch TV and actually does watch TV are the over 50 because they’re retired and watch more TV than anyone , so I guess we go back to watching rubbish again.
You say the plot was way beyond belief? You want belief? Watch the History channel. TV is supposed to be entertaining, and the fact that most people are so gullible as to believe that “reality TV” is believable, with their scripted discussions and 24/7 camera from (almost) every conceivable angle, proves that.
Looks to me like the wrong people were polled to determine the “ratings”!
I found myself really enjoying this story, and the cast. The cast was very strong. Of course it is cancelled. Why wouldn’t it be? Anyone over 35 will be enjoying it, and, we all know that we are not part of the ‘ideal’ demographic that actually enjoys good stories and excellent acting. It is getting to the point that we are seriously considering giving up our television programmes and use NetFlix or something similar. TV execs seem to have no respect for old viewers and that is very sad indeed. C’est La Vie darn it.
I think the series was terrific. All three of us watched with anticipation. It was just as intertaining as other series. I would hope that NBC will change their mind.
I hope Netflix or another station picks it up!!!
Very disappointing NBC!! Boooo!!!!
You could of at least finished the story!!
We loved this show! Canceled? Booooooo hissssss! I’m sick and tried of great shows being cancelled! How about it being picked up by TNT, USA, A&E, or FOX? I’m terrifically bummed out!
I rarely watch anything on the mainstream networks, but this show grabbed my attention from the start. I can’t believe it wasn’t given more of a chance than this. I guess I’ll go back to cable.
I am SO SICK AND TIRED of getting interested in a show and it gets canceled. Add insult to injury, some idiot brain-numbing moronic show comes on and stays on.
This isn’t the first time that NBC has dropped the ball. The station is nearly useless.
I agree!! I’m done watching shows that are continuous every wk. Only movies and sitcoms for me now. Never watched any reality crap and never will, yet they keep stupidity like that on. Perhaps I’ll just drop tv all together.
Deb & most of the rest of the group are RIGHT! Why should any of us over 49 buy anything that the advertisers try to push on us? Our opinions are totally discounted. Any shows, w/very few exceptions, that are aimed at anyone w/a working brain and / or are thought provoking are quickly cancelled. As for NBC being “nearly ” useless…. NBC, as well as ABC are TOTALLY USELESS at giving those of us w/the actual money or buying power any say so in what is presented on tv these days. I was disgusted when FOREVER was cancelled and… Read more »
The ratings are from the 18 to 49 age group. It would so nice if they considered people of all ages. So many of the shows I enjoy have been cancelled because this age group doesn’t like them. We need a different group to make decisions.
The reason 18 to 49 is the demographic age group catered to by TV networks is because they spend the most money in the economy and television shows require sponsoring by businesses selling products. This the United States, it is capitalist country, ruled by capitalist interests. I guess there are pros and cons to that state of affairs. Many benefits, at least up until now, but one casualty is art and entertainment. It’s very shallow and geared to pleasing people who buy products they don’t need but are persuaded to buy by commercials on TV, that’s the nature of US… Read more »
I basically agree with Judy’s observations. Most of American TV is strictly aimed at giving the most people the least challenging programing. The lowest common denominator usually results in the biggest audience. As she says, that is the way Capitalism works… After the war end of WW2, when TV was just getting going, the American free market tradition meant that TV broadcasters were all commercial businesses. But everywhere else in the world, TV (and radio) was run by government. When I lived in Europe in the ’60s, each country had very few channels (3 or 4 or 5) and all… Read more »
Dieter, Well I can think of LOTS better uses for my tax money than financing anything which encourages people to sit looking at a box for hours at a time. THAT would certainly be brainwashing. The public has spoken, at least the ones with the most $$$$, and they want trash! Sad state of affairs, but not surprising.
This cancellation is disappointing…so find SOMETHING ELSE to do folks….read a book…find a hobby…..get a life!
