Rainn Wilson enjoyed a long run on the NBC sitcom The Office. How will FOX’s Backstrom perform in the ratings? Will it be cancelled or will it be renewed for a second season?
On Backstrom, an offensive, irascible yet brilliant detective (Wilson) is brought back from exile to run Portland Police Bureau’s Special Crimes Unit. The rest of the cast includes Genevieve Angelson, Dennis Haysbert, Kristoffer Polaha, Page Kennedy, Beatrice Rosen, and Thomas Dekker.
The higher a show’s ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better its chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically the following morning, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
5/8 update: FOX has cancelled Backstrom after one short season.
Final season averages: 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.99 million total viewers.

What do you think? Do you like the Empire TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
PLEASE RENEW THIS SHOW! IT IS EXCELLENT!
Love the cast! 1st two episodes blew me away.. past two not as good but still excellent programming. Rain Wilson’s character is infectious because of the rough qualities! He’s damaged: That’s why he can do what he does. You must invest the time to get to know him. Finally a brilliant show, but watch Fox have to cancel this show, while a ghetto piece of trash like “Empire” flourishes.
DO NOT CANCEL BACKSTROM!!!! IT IS GREAT!!
Episodes of backstrom are broadcast on Thursdays not Wednesday
Yes, thanks!
Based on the previews it looked like a good show but was disappointed. I didn’t bother with the second episode. Writing was bad and lost interest by the first commercial break. It will probably stay on the air though because I thought Golden Boy was a good cop show and then they pulled that. I guess that’s why I’m not in the show business.
Still on the fence with this one so I’ll keep watching it for a while.
I thought it would be more of a House MD character with cops but something major is lacking. It one thing to make Backstrom unlikable to the other characters on the show but to make him unlikable to the viewers as well is a recipe for cancellation.
The cast/characters are also easily forgettable— I cannot recall the name of another character besides Backstrom on the show.
in this weeks show he started to wonder what’s wrong. he may moderate and that would be good. maybe the writers can strike a good balance. he is a good cop.
this sounds like one of those shows where you ask yourself, not only who thought up this horrible idea, but who the bigger idiot was who decided to actually put it on the air.
I lasted 15 minutes.. I couldn’t watch it. Not only is the lead a slob, he’s disgusting to watch. No thanks… This show is not for me.
Yes, I agree. For me to be a fan of a show, the main character or characters must have some redeeming qualities. I accept characters with flaws because that makes them human and more like real people you can relate to. Like Jack in Stalker; he’s flawed but he has other qualities that make him a good man and a good cop. Dylan McDermott does a great job portraying Jack as a tough guy but vulnerable. Maggie Q does the same thing with her character. Those characters make Stalker a show I want to see every week. However, in the… Read more »
came here looking for reviews as to whether to watch or not. the promo at the top of the page was enough. the comments just reinforced it. a badly done horrible cop version of house. PASS.
It’s not going to last. None of the humor that was in the advance ads weren’t in the first show. Without that humor, his character has no charm and as a result is very unlikeable. As someone else said, his supporting cast is very uninteresting for anything else to enjoy.
I totally agree with Bill Cord. I lasted watching it for about 20 mins. The character was just more obnoxious (and disgusting) than I can deal with for a whole season. I liked House, but somehow this one just doesn’t work.
If this show lasts one season it will be a miracle. First, Wilson is miscast because he simply cannot pull a cop clone of House. None of the secondary characters are interesting and the little trick that Backstrom uses (describing someone to figure out the motive for actions) does not work because it is such an obvious writer’s hook.
When the viewer cannot wait for the ending credits, it is a bad sign for the show.
Thought the first episode was very good. I’d cut back on the rainy scenes and the cigar chomping bits, Portland does have alot of rainy weather but not all the time. And I hate to see people smoke on screen,
I deal with “offensive, irascible” people during the day. I’m sure others do as well. So why would I want to subject myself to this same type of person at night when I want to forget about my job?
Didn’t do it for me. I love Rainn Wilson; but the main character, Backstrom is just too unlikable no matter how brilliant he is. I need to find something in the characters that make me want to invite them into my home every week. You know, characters I’d want to hang out with. I might watch it again just to make sure; but at this point, if something else I want to watch is on opposite Backstrom; I’d go for the other show.
And I agree with Why Watch. I don’t want to relive my job while watching TV to escape reality.
WOW!!! it did well. but lets see what happens next week when everything goes back on air. i personally liked it. do think the ratings will com down next week though.
Absolutely FANTASTIC show!! Shame to anyone who wants to cancel this!
