ABC gave Black Box a straight-to-series order and ordered 13 episodes without seeing a pilot first. They held it until late in the season (typically not a good sign) on Thursdays at 10pm as a replacement for their hit show, Scandal. Will Black Box live up to expectations? Will it be a ratings success and earn a second season or will it be cancelled instead? Stay tuned.
Black Box revolves around a beautiful and brilliant neuroscientist (Kelly Reilly) who’s hiding the fact that she’s bipolar. The rest of the cast includes Ditch Davey, David Ajala, Terry Kinney, Ali Wong, David Chisum, Laura Fraser, Siobhan Williams, and Vanessa Redgrave.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
8/7 update: ABC has cancelled Black Box after one season.
Final season averages: 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.41 million total viewers.

Note: Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like the Black Box TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or be renewed for a second season?
One of the best shows ever . I love how it shows that people with a illness can stile work please don’t take it off . Do a 2 seasons please
This show is riveting. Reilly’s acting is super. The story line is compelling. Even the background music is mesmerizing. Bipolar disorder needs to be brought out into the light as and illness that must be understood with compassion for its victims. This show does this in a human way. Give it one more season!
Love the show. Every week got better and better. The portrait of the bi polar disease was spot on and the world can learn from it. Please think before you cancel this. Be brave. Make a statement.keep I
Please do not cancel black box. It is now my favorite show!! I know too many people with mental illness and this show is the only one on tv. Especially love the therapy sessions and that she is flawed and has to deal with her illness every day. And if you ever questioned any theripist, psychiatrist or doctor the large percentage of them got in to their field to cure either their own illness or somebody they loved. Would love to see this show stay on as long as grey’s.
I love this show! They are crazy to cancel it.
Please please please renew this show!!! I look forward to it every week. Its wonderfully written and acted!!! I feel like I learn something each week.
I reeeeeeeeaaaaallllly love this show, I want to see what happens next….please bring it back!!!
Brilliant show! I agree with others comments when they stated they are tired of seeing these stupid reality shows staying on the air or replacing wonderful shows! Black Box delivers a wonderful storyline that’s original. We need to keep a show that has substance on the air. I DVR all of my shows. Do DVR recordings count in the ratings? Give the show at least a second season.
Please do not cancel this show – it helps people understand the trials and tribulations of living with bipolar disease and other mental illnesses. We need to see more examples of people living amazing lives with this disease.
Black Box addresses one of the most serious medical conditions known to medical science. The show reveals the phenomenal abilities and potential of people with bipolar; and, yet, it also is realistic about the devastating effects one can encounter when he or she decompensates. Above all, however, Black Box paints bipolar in a positive light and conveys that help is available and hope is possible. I know the importance of this type of show, because I have lived with this medical condition for 32 years. Please keep Black Box on the air, so the general population can see bipolar in… Read more »
This show assisted in my battle to be off my meds, (of course this war furied and failed just like Catherine Black’s) but nonetheless, it is nice to see someone on television who actually gets it, who’s not afraid to crack open the skull and reveal that the brain does bleed. Its an eye opener to most of the world, the part of the world who has not stood on the brink of suicide or felt the high of nations rising within or have been so afraid to leave one’s safe place they were forced to build a fort in… Read more »
I hate that ratings r always based on what the youngest demographic likes. I am 40 and I love this show, one of my favorite of the seasons new shows on all channels this yr. When I was 18-30 I never watched tv. When u r young u r going out, listening to music, or now days on the internet. Then after that u r at home w/small children and have no time for adult tv, u r always with ur kids, or watching childrens tv shows, or unable to watch adult tv for fear of what little ears or… Read more »
Please keep this show on the air. I like it better than anything else showing this season. You can see the numbers growing each week as people realize what they have here, an explanation of what bi polar (and other notable conditions that affect the brain) is and how that looks in pictures. It explains to families struggling to understand a loved one who has this affliction. There are no words to describe it. We’ve just never seen anything like this before. I hope you will keep series going. I wait for this show each week and tell everyone about… Read more »
Please renew the show! I have to admit, I did not like the first episode. But the found the rest fascinating! I’ve worked with psychiatric clients for approximately 30 years. Not only have the creators gotten right, as a professional, I’ve learned about disorders that I’ve never seen ( I’ve googled them to make sure the show was accurate about them). This is one of those shows that you have to watch more than once. Definitely worth it!!!!! Refreshing change from the stupid reality shows that make people think dysfunctional behavior is the norm!!!!!
Don’t cancel the show. It is easier to understand mental health conditions when you actually watch this show. The actress who plays Dr. Black deserves an award for her ability to play this role. This show depicts real life.
