As Tom Kane continues to try to keep a grip on his city and life, the Boss TV series struggles to attract an audience. Will Boss be cancelled or renewed for a third season of Starz? That’s an even bigger challenge thank Kane’s.
Airing on Friday nights, Boss revolves around the Mayor of Chicago (Kelsey Grammer) who’s recently been diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disorder. Determined to remain in charge, he conceals the disease from everyone around him except his physician. The Starz TV show also features the talents of Connie Nielsen, Hannah Ware, Jeff Hephner, Kathleen Robertson, Troy Garity, Rotimi, Jonathan Groff, and Sanaa Lathan.
It’s no secret that the TV series struggled in its first season. Despite sporting some top talent, the viewers and ratings just weren’t there. Luckily for the cast and crew, the show was renewed for a second season weeks before the show even premiered. Had the cable channel waited to see how well Boss would perform before making a decision, it’s hard to believe we’d be seeing a second season now.
Last month, at The Television Critics Association press tour, Boss showrunner Farhad Safinia said, “I am completely aware of what the numbers are, and I’m heartbroken… It’s one of those things where you’d like more people to see what you’re doing… I do hope the audience comes to see it so we can tell the entire story. I think we just have to work on that assumption that we will get to do it.”

The ratings were so low for the first season of Boss that they’re often very difficult to locate. We do know that Boss premiered last October to 659,000 viewers and by the middle of the run had fallen to 250,000.
Season two certainly hasn’t been bringing any better ratings. The August 24th installment drew just 229,000 viewers and the season has averaged only 310,000. Earlier this year, the second season of Spartacus averaged 1.35 million on Friday nights in the same timelot.
It seems highly unlikely that Starz will be bringing back Boss for a third season. These numbers are just incredibly small for an expensive scripted drama.
On the positive side, Safinia has indicated that they plot each season like a movie so that each has a beginning, middle, and end. While it’s very likely that Boss will be cancelled, at least the show’s loyal viewers will be given at least some kind of resolution by the end of the season. Season two wraps on October 19th.
What do you think? Do you like the Boss TV series? Why do you think it hasn’t caught on with a bigger audience? Should it be renewed for a third season or cancelled?
I love the show Kelsey is top notch they all are. I got starz just to see season 2.
This show rocks! From week to week, you never know what’s gonna happen next! But, that’s what makes it SO GOOD! Please don’t take it off the air without ending it in the way it’s supposed to end! Please!!!
This show is well writen and thought provoking. It is a shame to say but most people prefer simple things like Jersey
Great show . Well written and thought provoking. It is a shame to say but most people prefer simple things like Jersey Girls. I will be heart broken if there is no third season.
Just as one of the other viewers I watch it on demand most times but I would like my vote to count. ITS A KEEPER.
Please renew this show. It is one of my favorite shows and it deserves a proper ending. Do not cheat the hundreds of thousands of loyal viewers.
It’s the third best show on TV behind Breaking Bad and Homeland, and better than Mad Men (which has become too long in the tooth and turning into a bit of a soap opera), better than The Walking Dead (which is a soap opera with increasingly boring gore fests) and considerably better than Boardwalk Empire (a dog’s breakfast with a weaselly main character). The civic shenanigans are sometimes enacted at such a pace as to confuse the viewer (hick or no hick), but explanations tend to emerge later as revelations. The performances, especially Grammar’s, are outstanding, and the Machiavellian behavior… Read more »
1st. was very good but somewhat hard to follow. 2nd was completely impossible to follow , i say cancel , i won’t watch it again.
you have to pay attention
Please renew. It’s my new favorite series. Outside of the wire it is the best series I have seen in a long time. Please do not leave us feeling abandoned. Kelsey Gramme is a super star in acting. One reason why slot of viewers are not being cancelled
Is like myself I watch the show on demand after it shows
On network because of my schedule. I Think many views aren’t getting counted. Please leave this show On and give these writers that crated the show a chance to tell this store
To the end.
PLEASE. RENEW for a Third Season. We here in Michigan LOVE it. We have a Boss viewing party every week to watch. Please. Please Please Renew
This show is too good to cancel without a final year to properly end the series. One of the best dramas in television history. Don’t blame the show for poor ratings, blame the network brass who put it on Fridays at 9 PM when almost everyone is out doing something else. I’m sure the ratings would be higher if everyone who recorded the series and watched it later at their convenience were included. How about switching it to a night like Wednesday or Thursday to give it a better ratings chance? It would be the work of “Satan” if such… Read more »
Awesome show! Would be heartbroken to have it not renewed. The drama is excellent, and the convoluted shenanigans of big city politics are fascinating, albiet a tad hard to follow at times. Not the fault of the show; am a country hick! LOL!
Boss is a cleverly written show with superb acting. I think it needs to go to another network for the sake of viewership.
This is an amazing show, that is well written and the cast is amazing. The need to advertise it more, it deserves to be seen,,, love the show, cast is awesome, Kelsey Grammar is great!
Insanley good show..hard to believe ratings are not sky high.so representative of Chicago . The scenes are beautiful, the acting superb. Really nail biting plots and a lot of room for all the characters to evolve.will be sick if this show is cancelled for a3rd season!
I love this drama!! Best one yet! I usually record this series, only because on Friday evenings I am busy with the fam. Maybe a different day of the week for the show to run would work better; Sundays… I am anxious to see the next season, love and hate Tom Kane is conflicting. “The show must go on!”
RENEW, RENEW, RENEW!!!! Promote the show more – maybe change networks. It is an outstanding show, cannot for the life of me figure why it does not have better numbers. The writing, the acting – holy cow they are amazing! Connie Nielsen – stunning. Kathleen Robertson – yowzers. And, of course, Kelsey Grammer is SO incredibly ruthless – and somehow I’m rooting for him – in this role, I feel like “Frasier who?!” And Frasier is my most favorite comedy show of all time. Do whatever you have to do, Starz. This story deserves to be told, it’s superb.
