In a somewhat surprising move, the alphabet network has cut a beloved family drama after five seasons on the air. Season six of Brothers & Sisters won’t be on ABC’s fall schedule.
Brothers & Sisters debuted in 2006 and revolves around the extended Walker family of Pasadena, California. The current season features a large ensemble cast that includes Calista Flockhart, Dave Annable, Gilles Marini, Luke Macfarlane, Matthew Rhys, Patricia Wettig, Rachel Griffiths, Ron Rifkin, and Sally Field.
The family drama was nearly cancelled last year but was ultimately renewed for an abbreviated fifth season. In light of some positive ratings, ABC ordered additional episodes, bringing the season total to 22 installments. Unfortunately, those ratings didn’t last.

The numbers slowly declined over the course of the season but really seemed to take a dip in the latter part of the season, just when execs were trying to figure out if it was worth renewing. Rumors started circulating that Brothers & Sisters would be cancelled and then there was word that ABC was considering an abbreviated sixth season to wrap things up.
In the end, network execs decided there just wasn’t enough interest in the show anymore and wanted to use the post-Desperate Housewives timeslot for a new series.
As a result, last Sunday’s season finale will end up being the series finale for Brothers & Sisters. It’s a sad and unfortunate end for a once popular series.
What do you think? Are you sad to hear that Brothers & Sisters won’t be back for season six? Was it time for the series to end?

It really iritates me that they keep crap on TV and cancel the good shows! Not everyone wants to watch reality shows! Brothers & Sisters was a great show that produced alot of entertainment. It was an escape for 1 hour of the week where a person could sit back & just get entertained. I am not impressed that it was cancelled!

Absolutely unbelievable. There is sooooo much crap on TV today. This show actually had some depth to it and “It made you think”. Of course, some of the story lines seemed over the top at times..but it was nonetheless, well written and well acted. I looked forward to it each week. I found myself rooting for and feeling pain/sorrow when the characters did. And isn’t that what a GREAT show does..pulls the audience in so that we feel like a part of what we are watching and/or can relate to what is happening to the characters????? With each passing season… Read more »
Couldn’t get enough of it, just got into it this past year and tape the daily’ catch up’ episodes in the morning. I feel a part of it. Such a feel good, feel bad show that lingers with you. Sometimes I’ll be thinking during the day that what happened on the show really happened to somebody I know and then I’ll think, no… it was on Brothers and Sisters. Real enough for good TV… the greatest of Soap. Now I’ll have to go back to my reality… Definitely NOT reality TV.
This show should not be canceled. Its a great show.Maybe change the time slot or day and maybe you will get the viewers you want! It should NOT be canceled.
Very sad to see Brothers & Sisters end. It was a GREAT show!! I have to agree with Lance – if you are going to end the show, at least have a Grand Finale to wrap things up. Looked forward to Sunday night TV – great way to end the weekend. 🙁
What a shame! Brothers & Sisters was a very good show. As we all hate Sunday night b/c we know we have to get ready for another week of work…Brothers & Sisters made Sunday night enjoyable.

i think abc made a huge mistake by cancelling the brothers & SISTERS, there is no other shoes out there like that. this show connected family together and teach you. i strongly believes that America needs this shows. let’s take grey anatomy and private practice nothing interesting lately , they are more about intimacy,
please abc reconsider this show you won’t regret it
Yes, I agree and I was surprised as I didn’t realize it was cancelled until I started checking out the fall season. I don’t what is going at ABC, as there are two other new shows that didn’t make to a new season. My girls and I have enjoyed. I liked Brothers and Sister for it’s family drama, I was disappointed Rob Lowe was gone but I like the fact that it was serious but yet they teased and joked around with each too, like a real family. I didn’t agree on all aspects of the show but it was… Read more »
disappointed that ABC would cancell a quality family drama series, and replace it with dumb sized reality tv or some other lame comedy………….what the heck were they thinking? Bring back the cast…………and show……..who’s next on the chopping block Greys and Private Practice…..could do without desparate housewives…..B&S was a much better show. A sad day.
I am saddened by the cancellation of Brothers and Sisters. This series was a definite winner. I thought the story-line was interesting and realistic; the Actors, in my opinion, did a terrific job.Again, what is ABC thinking, I guess we need ANOTHER “Reality” Show or ANOTHER “Police” show. To the Actors of Brothers and Sisters, all I can say is, Well Done!! I hope another network is Smart enough to pick up this Series.
I agree with Brooke & Catherine. The show touched on so many different challenges in a family’s life. Kudos to all the cast members as they truly portrayed their characters in a completely believable manner! I am so tired of all the garbage on TV these days but I guess that is what sells. Think I am going to turn off the TV and read a few good books!
This was one if the best shows out there in a long time.Especially with all the junk that is on TV these days.I loved this show it had a little of everything literally and figuratively. Literally because it covered so many types of people republicans/democrats,gay/straight,and military. Figuratively because it covered all your emotions happy, sad, angry, and any other emotion you can think of you never know what is going to come next. The story line alone was great and so easy to relate to it’s a big family with lots of drama. I think few people can say they don’t relate… Read more »
I guess quality programming is becoming extinct. The innovative story lines and the exceptional acting caused one to truly care about these characters and their relationships. I feel like I have lost some of my best friends.
Guess Sunday night will be reserved for a good book. Brothers & Sisters was a show my husband and I enjoyed together – it was our favorite show.
Thank you cast & crew for all the great entertainment you provided.
