Syfy has decided to cancel Caprica, the ratings-challenged spin-off of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica (BSG), but the show’s universe isn’t necessarily going away.
In a statement from the cable channel, Mark Stern, EVP of Original Programming, said, “We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series. Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”
Caprica will be pulled from the schedule following the November 2nd episode. According to the statement, “The final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, and will conclude the run of the series.”
This news comes on the heels of the channel’s announced plans for another BSG prequel called Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. It had previously been described as an online prequel that could possibly serve as a backdoor pilot for a regular series. BSG executive producer David Eick is on board while Ron Moore is not.
Blood & Chrome will have more action and combat sequences, more closely reflecting the reimagined Galactica series. The description reads, “Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet — the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.”
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Caprica be cancelled? Are you excited to see another BSG prequel series?

I know…I know…the Syfy Channel isn’t interested in quality programming as much as the quintessential commercially programmable angry-boy viewer with limited i.q. and disposable cash in hand. (It shows!)
I think most people just don’t understand how things work. it is a business. if the big wigs aren’t making enough money to keep their noses in cracks of their mistresses, or the wife and kids off their backs, they are not happy. Simply put, we as the viewers don’t really count. (Unless that is, you happen to have one of the boxes I HAVE on my TV.) Thanks for taking the time to see if this would work. (Opps, i take it back, because YOU DID NOT TAKE THE TIME needed to see if it would work. ) Your… Read more »
What an incredible disappointment it is to hear that Caprica has been cancelled…and for good this time. It shows the highest production standard of anything on t.v. My favorite by far. And for what as its replacement? Not another (L. Skywalker, I. Jones, J. Kirk, aka “Speedracer”) angry boy (boring) wonder clone! Ho-hum……another Syfy sleeper. Whoever is behind this political switch-a-roo should be ashamed of himself.
WTF (What The FRACK)! I don’t believe this has happened in the manner. I thoroughly enjoy the series and the concept of a prequel to BSG. I am very disappointed with Cable TV much like I used to be with Network TV – I stopped watching NTV all together!
I am concerned here because my dvr didnt pcik up anything yesterday. did they actually air something on 11/02?
it really stinks this show was cancelled it was awesome
scify or whatever really does blow these days…no clue what sci fi is
This show was all too often just plain boring. Every episode was the exact same. Something uninteresting happens with the Greystones or the Adamas, then they all talk for 10 minutes in monotone/sorrowful voices, 15 flashbacks occur, something boring happens in v-world, more flashbacks, the monotheists yell at each other. Every week 45 minutes goes by for a story that can be told in 5.
Once again the corporate wonks are dumbing down a newtork, reducing its content for the Delta-minus semimorons.
As said above, SciFi was great; the new iteration sucks. Caprica is an intelligent, well-written and executed series. Too bad the management at the corporate level are idiots.
The Sci Fi Channel used to be great.
SyFy sux.
I was shocked to hear this has happened. Yes things had started out slow but I saw signs of it getting better. I wonder if anything will be resolved with final 5 shows or if we will just be left hanging.
Sci Fi channel is a joke. I use to watch this channel daily…now maybe once a week for Stargate Universe, which a tape because even the commercials are ridiculous. Sci Fi channel with its ‘disease related logo’ and bunch of people running around in the dark chasing their imaginary ghosts. Give me a break. I’m starting to think CNN or Fox News is more reliable than the Sci Fi channel. At least, the news programs know who they are.
You need to add a big L to your logo for loser!
You’re kidding, right? First you take one the best first seasons ever in BSG and make a mess of it. Then you cancel the spin-off before it even get off the ground. And you expect us to invest time in yet another show? Are you doing too much cocaine on the weekends?
Tell you what. Why don’t you run Ghost Hunters and Destination Truth 24-7 and enjoy your ratings. I can tell you this, they are not sci-fi fans. I don’t think many of us will EVER watch your channel again.
I loved BSG but I am not a big fan of prequels. It hard to get excited about events in a show when You know how it is going to end. Caprica would have made a good mini series. And so will the original cylinder wars but it is time for something new since the way Moore ended the show you can’t go into the future the way they did with such success with star trek. It time for a new stoy. New worlds to love new ships to call home to and a new enemy to fight where thebending… Read more »
I can see them canceling Caprica. Its just too slow Yet if they are serious about the new shoe …blood… Then I think they should commit to a blending of Caprica into the new show …Blood… That way Caprica does not get canceled and fans of Caprica can just carry into …blood… And then …blood… can and will regain the fans of BSG as soon as …Blood… Hits the air with the much needed action Come on MOORE stop sulking and do a great merge and make TV history with a Living BSG series that progresses seamlessly from era to… Read more »
For me, this is criminal. Perhaps SyFy should have picked a different time slot – there is so much competition at 10pm on Tuesdays, that I have to watch TV in another room because my DVR is maxed out on programming. Did Caprica ever really stand a chance against Good Wife, Sons of Anarchy, and Parenthood?
I feel like I waited forever for these episodes and now the wait will be longer. Meanwhile insipid plots reign on several of the series they keep on the air.
And to think I took a petition door-to-door in my youth in order to force Comcast to carry the then SciFi network in the first place.
::shakes her head::
What a shame. Though this year has focused too much on the STO I was enjoying the fleshing out of the Adama family life and seeing what was happening in New Cap City. Can’t they just air the final eps now???? I mean, would doing that really take away from our enjoyment of a Shake Weight infomercial or some WWE nonsense?
