Why did Chicago Justice end? Recently, star Jon Seda spoke The Hollywood Reporter about the cancelled NBC series and his return to Chicago PD.
Seda, who plays Detective Antonio Dawson on the cop drama, left mid-way through season four to join the spin-off series Chicago Justice. However, the legal drama was short-lived and NBC cancelled it after only one season.
In the interview, Seda revealed he was hoping for a second season of Chicago Justice:
I was hoping for it to come back and get another shot. We only had 13 episodes, so [it’s] hard to really get the rhythm going with just 13 episodes in. It was kind of thrown all over the place where episodes we shot early appeared in the middle and some we shot late aired first. Yet it was doing pretty well, I think it was averaging 6 million viewers on Sunday. That said, I think had it been given another shot and another season, it would have done better. You never want to see a show fail and not come back. But I don’t think we even look at it as a failure. It just didn’t get a second season, but it did well.”
Later, Seda said he is thankful for the chance to return to Chicago PD, which premieres its fifth season on NBC on September 27th at 10 p.m. ET/PT:
I was very thankful. If I had to move on, I was going to move on and then I was very thankful for the time that I had. Actors hope to get one year of a show and here I started on Fire and that turned into four years of P.D. and then Justice, so it was a great opportunity, and if that was all it was going to be, I was very happy for that. But for them to come back and really show their support and wanting to have me back, it’s just really incredible. I’m really thankful.”
And how does Antonio re-join the Chicago PD team?
I think they ran through so many different possibilities and it came down to something kind of simple. It’s, like I said earlier, in that line of work, people come and go for whatever reason. There’s a case that the Intelligence team is working on in the first episode where it kind of gets stuck with the suspect and how to get close to a certain suspect and they need someone that can really do great undercover [work], and hasn’t been seen by this suspect, has no connection and Antonio turns out to be that person. That leads to series of events that will land him back with Intelligence.”
What do you think? Do you watch Chicago PD? Are you glad Jon Seda is returning?
So glad Jon Seda is back!! He’s one of my favorites on P.D.
Happy to have him back in the team. I´ve been watching both Chicago PD and Chicago Med from the beginning of the series and I´m looking forward to the new season.
Yes am so glad he is back where he belongs. PD is my favourite show
I am thrilled to have “Antonio” back on Chicago PD!
Sad to read Chicago Justice not being given a second series but more than happy for Jon Seda returning to Chicago PD, really missed him, he was a main part of the team
I will enjoy Antonio back. Love the Chicago shows. I don’t think they had the right lead actor on Justice. We were looking for another exciting spinoff but it just wasn’t there.
Sorry – I thought Chicago Justice was boring& expected better. acting & better script for “Ava” from Justified
Happy to have antonio back with intelligence.
Will Really be happy to have Jon Seda back on PD. I am a big fan of all of the ‘Chicago’ shows. I was also a fan who was sorry to see Chicago Justice dropped! Oh well, the ‘powers that be’ have spoken, we mortals just have to speak up sooner.
I also enjoyed Chicago justice. No idea why it was cancelled
Love Chicago PD. Love Jon Seda, in all the roles he has played in. Will definitely miss Chicago Justice! We really loved that show!!
Bring it back!!! It didn’t even get a fair chance to find its flooting and audience in a mere 12 episodes. Had it gotten a full s2 I think it would have been a different story and would have been a huge hit. Even more so bad ppl known it was Ben Stones son I didn’t know until after watching some 4 episodes when I saw Robinette (which was awesome)
Couldn’t agree more. It got only 13 episodes and was on a Sunday night. And the first four episodes had to be forced into a two week window because of poor scheduling with NBC’s reality show. And with all that, it still outperformed Shades of Blue and Taken. And yet, those got renewed, but Justice got cancelled. It makes no sense. Had it been given a weeknight time slot and started earlier in the year, this show would have been renewed easily. We finally had a Chicago show where we didn’t have to worry about who was sleeping with who.… Read more »
NBC was foolish to cancel “Chicago Justice” so quickly.
I certainly agree. I enjoyed watching all the episodes. It wasn’t given enough time to find it’s groove. I will however will be looking forward to Jon Seda’s return to Chicago P.D.
