After seven years on the beat, the show’s over for Detective Lily Rush (Kathryn Morris). CBS has officially cancelled Cold Case.
Each episode of Cold Case begins by showing an unsolved crime from the past. The scene then flashes forward to the present day and a group of homicide detectives try to piece together what really happened, using old evidence and new interviews. The series stars Morris, Danny Pino, John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford, Thom Barry, and Tracie Thoms.
Cold Case began in September of 2003 and quickly became a staple of the CBS Sunday night schedule. The crime drama had a successful first season and, by season two, was averaging a 3.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 15.1 million viewers. For the next couple seasons, total viewership fell a bit but the all-important demo numbers rose, reaching a 3.8 in season four.
Unfortunately the ratings have come down quite a bit since then. In season five, the show averaged a 2.9 rating and about 12 million viewers. Last season, Cold Case sank lower, to an average of a 2.7 rating and CBS made a choice between renewing ailing Without a Trace or Cold Case. They chose to keep Cold Case but may have regretted it pretty quickly. This season, the show’s ratings dropped even further to a 2.15 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.6 million viewers.

So, while the overall viewership isn’t terrible, the demo numbers are and that’s what brings the ad dollars. CBS often has the most total viewers, but they are often lacking in the 18-49 demo department.
To no surprise, CBS has cancelled Cold Case after seven years on the air. The show won’t be back for season eight next fall. Sadly, the show is not available on DVD. It’s believed that securing the rights for the show’s extensive use of period music is problematic.

I HAVE WATCHED COLD CASE EVER SINCE IT CAME ON, I GOT MY SISTER AND HUSBAND TO WATCH IT. I COULDN’T WAIT TO SEE IT EVERY WEEK. CBS SAID THEY CANCELLED THE SHOW BECAUSE OF THE RATINGS, WELL IF THEY HADN’T MOVED IT TO 10:00 PM. THEY MAY HAVE HAD HIGHER RATINGS, THE OLDER PEOPLE WENT TO BED EARLY AND THE KIDS THAT WATCHED HAD TO BE IN BED. This was one of the best shows on television. I loved the music, along with the cast and storylines. I think part of the problem may have been because of football . .pushing the time back so late. I have Tivo, so could record; but people that can’t record couldn’t stay up that late, or were unsure about when it was going to start.
They should’ve just changed the night. They can always bring the show back on a new night. More good TV down the drain.
Iguess the ratings dropped because some on Sundays when I watched the show it was up aginst Desperate Housewires, other Sunadys it was pushed up(time) because football was on . They should have placed it on a diiferent night.
Numbers now Cold Case.Two classy shows dropped.I really looked forward to watching these intellegent and witty shows.Without a Trace was another great one.Maybe the reason Im starting to watch more USA shows in because CBS is to stupid to see that the
Baby Boomers are all the demografics that matter.Not all of us want to watch New TV.We want more than reality and fluff.

I absolutely love Cold Case! It is by far my favorite show! It can’t be cancelled! CBS needs to realize that its not the viewers fault that the show airs on a night that sports run over the airtime of the show. I have read in a previous comment that someone tries to tape it but sports screw it up. I think the answer to better ratings for the show is a differnt time slot on a different day, not cancelling. I really really hope that they decide to keep Cold Case, I cant take another reality show.
I am very disappointed Cold Case has been cancelled. I had stopped watching it after it first aired due to it being on Sunday nights. I would try to tape the show, but would end up often missing it due to Sports games running over. Had it been on a different night, I bet viewership would have been much greater. I have recently gotten myself hooked on watching old episodes. I am unsure how the ratings system works, but it seems there are a lot of disappointed viewers. It’s a shame when a good show is cancelled.
please bring back cold case for another season please i love that show never stopped watching all the other shows arent as good as cold case
I loved this show, and watched every season. I even got my brother hooked on the show. The stories were fabulous, the music fantastic, and the mystery of the story line always a challenge to try and figure out. We loved the show and will miss it alot. My brother is the one who finally found out, on line, that the show had been cancelled, because we had all been wondering where it was. It is sad the period music was a problem to aquire.
