After seven years on the beat, the show’s over for Detective Lily Rush (Kathryn Morris). CBS has officially cancelled Cold Case.
Each episode of Cold Case begins by showing an unsolved crime from the past. The scene then flashes forward to the present day and a group of homicide detectives try to piece together what really happened, using old evidence and new interviews. The series stars Morris, Danny Pino, John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford, Thom Barry, and Tracie Thoms.
Cold Case began in September of 2003 and quickly became a staple of the CBS Sunday night schedule. The crime drama had a successful first season and, by season two, was averaging a 3.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 15.1 million viewers. For the next couple seasons, total viewership fell a bit but the all-important demo numbers rose, reaching a 3.8 in season four.
Unfortunately the ratings have come down quite a bit since then. In season five, the show averaged a 2.9 rating and about 12 million viewers. Last season, Cold Case sank lower, to an average of a 2.7 rating and CBS made a choice between renewing ailing Without a Trace or Cold Case. They chose to keep Cold Case but may have regretted it pretty quickly. This season, the show’s ratings dropped even further to a 2.15 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.6 million viewers.

So, while the overall viewership isn’t terrible, the demo numbers are and that’s what brings the ad dollars. CBS often has the most total viewers, but they are often lacking in the 18-49 demo department.
To no surprise, CBS has cancelled Cold Case after seven years on the air. The show won’t be back for season eight next fall. Sadly, the show is not available on DVD. It’s believed that securing the rights for the show’s extensive use of period music is problematic.

Sorry to see Cold Case go. I found it a very intreging show. I liked the graphic nature, and loved trying to solve the case with the actors.
Please bring back Cold Case! I’ve been wondering why I haven’t been able to find it and I finally googled it to learn that CBS cancelled it. I watch very little prime tv, but I loved Cold Case! This series was well done by the cast and not only was it a great show, it also brought hope to real life people who were waiting for real life cold cases to be solved! Cold Case units throughout our Country became more active into looking into their past unsolved cases! Come on CBS, bring back Cold Case!
I am sad to see it go….it’s been one of the few shows that I turn the TV on for…The reason the ratings drop is because it isn’t on a great time slot nor does it play every week at the same time for me so I usually miss it because they keep changing the time. Guess I’ll have to toss the TV out now hahaha
I have become a Cold Case-aholic over the past year, watching reruns on TNT and a local TV station It is indeed an excellent show.
i’m mad as hell over this ,to many things left open .what is wrong with these people !! i wish they would make a movie atleast to answers to to many questions . OR JUST BRING IT BACK FOR US DIEHARD FANS CAN BE HAPPY AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved this show. It was one of the best shows on TV, well written and acted. I will miss it. I wish another channel would pick it up.
i am so upset that cold case got canceled,my husband and I we looked forward for Sunday to come so could sit and watch.I think its stupid thats its not on anymore.

I have to agree. It was a real shame they cancelled the show. I, to had a lot of trouble with the time slot delays. I’d wait and wait and finally change the channel. If I got back to the show – you had little idea where you walked in.
I also watch and tape reruns but I really wish the show would just come back.

I love the show. My mom and I would watch it together. It brought us closer together. I think you should have moved it to another night. Wednesday or Tuesday or move to a new network like TNT. CANCELLATION WAS BAD I THINK. I will miss the show. I hope it gets on DVD soon.
I loved this show. I started watched it as re-runs a couple of years ago and I have seen most episodes, except for the newer ones. It was very well done even though the formula was ususally the same. Great music! I liked the way they sort of “traveled thru time” and made the past be significant.
This was such a GREAT show, I can’t believe it got cancelled. I think it should have been moved to a different night. I hope the problem with the period music is being worked on so at least it can be put on DVD’s to get it out to all of us who loved this show. The period music was terrific as well!
