The struggle (and story) of the Bowman family ends tonight. The Colony TV show has been cancelled after three seasons but, would you have watched more episodes and a fourth season? Should it have been dropped?
A USA Network sci-fi drama, Colony stars Josh Holloway, Sarah Wayne Callies, Tory Kittles, Peter Jacobson, and Alex Neustaedter. The story unfolds in the near-future, in a world where citizens are under military occupation by the Colony Transitional Authority, as part of a large extraterrestrial invasion. Former FBI agent Will Bowman (Holloway) and wife Katie (Callies) were raising their daughter and two sons in Los Angeles, but were separated from the younger boy during the invasion and did everything they could to get him back. The third season kicked off six months after the season two finale, with Will and Katie rebuilding their family in the world beyond the walls. They begin a journey during which they uncover the truth behind the occupation. Once again, this family finds themselves having to choose sides.
The show debuted in January 2016 and got off to a positive start with a 0.44 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.36 million viewers. The series lost some steam over the course of the season. The first year averaged a 0.38 rating with 1.13 million and it was renewed for a second season.
Season two of Colony launched in January 2017 and the 13 episodes ended up averaging a 0.26 demo rating with 814,000 viewers. Compared to season one, that was down by 31% in the demo and 28% in viewership. Still, Colony was renewed for a third year even before the season two finale aired.
USA didn’t start running season three until May 2018. Thus far, the third season has averaged a 0.17 demo rating with 672,000 viewers. Compared to last year, that’s down by 36% and 18%, respectively.
Colony is currently one of USA Network’s lower-rated scripted series but, other shows aren’t doing that much better. While it’s not a complete surprise that USA cancelled Colony, they could have easily renewed it to wrap up the story with a final season. Unfortunately, they opted to end the series after three seasons and 36 episodes.

I am shocked that this show is cancelled. Left it at a major cliffhanger. I dedicate all this time to these shows that just get axed when one more season could tie it all up. Makes me want to just not even start watching a new show until it finishes its run and then binge watch, as long as I know a conclusion has been reached. So bitter, loved Colony. Perhaps Amazon could save it lke thay did with the Expanse.
Yes I would continue to watch Colony! I know numerous people who love this show. Very very sad it is cancelled.
Should have gone one more season to bring the series to a proper conclusion, but two more seasons would have been too much. Great acting by most and best season yet. However, the network did a great disservice to cast, crew and viewers with such inept ending. Really USA!? Clearly you are not interested in ending things with class. Get out of production of TV series and leave it to those that know how to do it right.
They could have done what the producers did with Firefly, or just a half season to tie it up. All too often, management think of their bottom line instead of the customer. This has happened way too many times and shows just how little media execs care about their viewers!
As a sci-fi degenerate I would watch if it was on, but I’m not going to cry about it. They had all these undesirable characters set up for total annihilation- how hard would it have been to add 45 seconds of all the morks and humans being wiped out by the awesome new aliens leaving behind Earth to return to beautiful wilderness like Chernobyl. Without a doubt, SERIOUSLY NEEDS a series finale, could tie it up in 6 episodes like they have done in previous shows that were canceled like Nikita and Continuum.

I LOVED this show, PVRed them all and was shocked to see Episode 13 was the last. Thought it was quite the cliffhanger and was so looking forward to season 4 to see how it all resolved. BRING it BACK!!!!
This season was great and had a lot to look forward to in another season. I really loved the show and wished it had a proper series finale.
I loved this series. Happens every time. I get into a series, keep up with the episodes and then “blam”! Gone baby gone. So wrong!
Unbelievable. Best season yet. Very unfortunate they ended without proper closure. PLEASE BRING THE SHOW BACK for 1 final season!!! Season 1 was solid, season 2 was so-so. But season 3 was PHENOMENAL. The show needed proper advertising. People will watch they just need to know about it. Crossing my fingers they reconsider for a closure to the Bowman family story.
Can’t believe it has been cancelled. Really love this show. Would have loved a proper ending. Would definitely have continued watching, and will do so if it is picked up elsewhere.
I wish someone would explain the ending to me – was the world destroyed; was Will saved? What the hell happened last night???
How can a network cancel a show that’s been on the air for three seasons without any conclusion, leaving all questions unanswered. I was so angry! I think that’s so disrespectful to the viewer! There should at least be be a true finale, We, the viewers, deserve it!!
Now that the USA Network has cancelled Colony, I have no reason to watch their network. Since they refuse to give fans resolution, there is no reason I should watch any future offerings anyway. I don’t want to invest my time in a network that will leave me hanging after I dedicate my attention to their show for 3 whole seasons.
TOTALLY AGREE. USA is so concerned with ratings, we’ll here you go…my viewership for ANY show on USA has now dropped to ZERO. I understand all shows come to an end, but to leave loyal viewers who stuck with it until the end with loose ends and just leave them hanging is inexcusable. Allow one more season, or at least a few more episodes to tie it up in a proper ending. I won’t invest another single minute on any more USA shows. Over three years wasted without a single conclusion except the sister obviously died and the Bowman’s son Charlie. In the future USA and Syfy(Dark Matter/The Expanse) will be avoided and I will wait for a series Finale before watching ensuring minimal contribution to disloyal networks and maximum satisfaction on my end 🙂 I also feel the writers have to take some blame in regards to Colony failing. The story dragged on quite a bit, so much so that’s it was 25 or 30 episodes in before seeing the hosts enemy. We should’ve had a look at them near the end… Read more »
Bring it back! I liked it and the acting and story line were good, people do fall apart when they lose a child!
