It’s the end of the road for Copper on BBC America. The cable channel has announced that the show has been cancelled after two seasons. The cancellation comes following the show’s modest ratings.
In a statement, BBC America GM Perry Simon said, “The opportunity to work with Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Will Rokos, Thomas Kelly and the extraordinary cast and crew on this journey is one that we are extremely proud of.”
He continued, “Their vision to retell the immigrant experience through the melting pot of New York City was an original and fresh idea that melded well with the essence of BBC America’s programming. After 23 episodes, with Lincoln dead and the nation starting to heal, it seems a fitting moment to conclude this American story.”
The de facto series finale will air this Sunday. It’s called “The Place I Called My Home.”
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear there won’t be a third season of Copper? How would you have ended the series?
Sorry to hear this. Very good descriptions of the conditions in that era. I will miss it.
What a disappointment that Copper has been cancelled!! It was my favorite show. Unlike most of the other garbage on TV I enjoyed the history, the unique characters, the setting, a view into the past, something different and interesting.
I was very disapointed to hear that the best series on TV was cancled. It was one of the best shows on TV. I to have written to BBC and ShowTime in an attmpt to have the series renewed. The many sitcoms have taken over and shows that thrill and entertain with throught provoking ideas are fading. The acting was superb and it was a very inventive historical prespective. I will miss 5 Points.
I agree. One of the very best shows on television going off.
One of the reasons I won’t watch BBC shows is because they are notorious for not renewing good shows. I could name several of them, but just go to HULU PLUS and check out the many, many shows just downloaded from the BBC network. Many of them are either one season with cliffhanger last shows, or worse, 5 or 6 episodes that stop smack in the middle of a great story (because it was canceled). However, fight hard for Copper, you never know. Veronica Mars fans are getting a movie after a long fan campaign. Good luck!
I doubt if anything we fans say will bring Copper back – why would you leave your audience hanging from an episode that shows an empty bar with two people stuffed in whiskey barrels?
Dr. John – We have already received media coverage and reached key players- BBC America ended it with a horrific cliffhanger, because even the writers didn’t know there wasn’t going to be a season 3. BBC committed an injustice on its viewers. They have also indicated that there is no chance for revival on their network for some reason. We also have the Bring Back Copper facebook page where there are key players involved.
I would love to join
It is interesting how shows like Copper that have originality and a bit of good historical value plus hold ones interest from episode to episode are cancelled so quickly. The TV media is so full of reality shows that it is very disconcerting when good entertainment fails to provide enough ratings to keep it going. Hopefully BBCA won’t do the same thing to Ripper Street.
Copper is one of the best shows on TV. Phenomenal cast & well writtshow. I can’t believe it. I hope we can save it
This was one of the best shows on television. A period piece on true historical facts of Irish immigrants in New York City. With all of the garbage on television, I finally found a show that had meaning and represented a significant time in history. Shame on our public and our viewers who keep garbage on TV such as the Kardashians who present no talent except if you include a group of self centered “disfunctionals”.
(Not including Bruce, who was a premier Athelete)
This is just a small acclaim to what is wrong with our society.
I so agree with you, very sorry to see it end.
Just finished watching, season finale. You were left with, a very shocking cliff hanger. What the Hell?
I really enjoyed the show. I was also totally invested. I hate networks, and producers, who see the writing on the wall. Trying to squeeze out another season. Leave the loyal fans, totally hanging forever, with a shocking cliff hanger.
Hi Stephen. .we are trying hard to get a season 3. Come join our cause on the save copper facebook page. We have already written the producers and distributors to show our support for tom fontana to make a movie or a third season on another network.
Hi Dr. Stephen- There is a chance Copper will be back now. Tom Fontana has told us that they are looking for a new home for the series. And rumors of a movie are escalating. – If you haven’t already, you should check out the Bring Back Copper campaign on Facebook at Bring Back Copper . There is letter writing, tweet-a-thons, and petitions to have Copper brought back onto another network. Tom Fontana is aware of our campaign and has already told us that a movie is a long shot, but a possibility and that they are also looking to… Read more »
There has never been a television series with this setting and time period before. The quality of the acting, scripts, subject matter & attention to detail has brought Five Points alive. It may be uncomfortable to expose the dark underbelly of this era of America, but it is too important to cancel.
Hopefully either BBC America will reconsider (such as AMC reconsidered when it aired another season of The Killing after cancelling it), or Copper will find another home (such as what happened to Damages when FX cancelled it).

loved the show. had it on my calendar. please renew.
This show really needs to be saved. It was one of the very best on TV, with the best cast and writers. The writers obviously didn’t know they were writing the last episode forever because they left their Copperheads hanging on several story lines. Please, BBCA, bring it back.

I’m one of the mods on twitter @save_CopperTV. I work from the savecoppertv.tumblr.com, which is in tandem with the twitter account. Give us a follow on twitter to keep up with our efforts.
Even if they won’t give us a full season 3, a film would be brilliant.
Is there any way to save this show. Copper is the best written show with a great cast. I cant believe bbc America would cancel this great show. I’ve watched this show from the first show to the last . I love this show. Finally a show worth watching and it gets cancelled. Please bbc America bring back this show .This show is worth saving. Can we write to anyone to help save this show?

Happy to see the outpouring of support for this Amazing TV show. Ginny, I could debate your letter point by point, but you obviously just don’t get it. These characters are amongst the most real and flawed human beings on TV. Francis McGuire, for all his failings and the evil acts he has committed, is one of my favorite characters ever in TV or movies. As flawed as he may be, you can always see that he really does love Kevin like a brother. And how great was it when he broke into The Rocky Road to Dublin in season… Read more »
@ Larry – Eloquently spoken! Please BBCA, bring Copper back, please. Thank you for the opportunity to learn and become eternally tied to the most colorful in-depth characters ever to be found on any media source. I look forward to Coppers’ future regardless of who is wise enough to invest in it’s continuance.
We have numerous campaigns to Save Copper. Go onto the Save Copper Facebook page for details on the many initiatives going on to save the show. There is a petition and letter writing campaigns. Many of us have already written Tom Fontana (and some have had replied- wonderful man), the executives at BBC America (you can get their contact info under the press info at the BBAAmerica . com contact page, and Cineflix as well. Also, follow the save_copper handle on twitter. I can’t post links to all these things here, but you can check out all these places for… Read more »
@ lainie – I have gotten involved with several fb pages and written an email, comments and signed a petition, so far. We also have Copperholics Anonymous page that is highly supportive of the show. Are you in that group yet. Spelling may be off here, but try. Thanks for the comradery.
Hi DeAnna,
I am associated with the Save Copper Facebook page and twitter people. I think I have already liked the Copperholics Anonymous page too ;). At this point, I have written to execs at BBC, Cineflex, Tom Fontana and TV Guide, as well as signed the petition. Sounds like we are both fighting the good fight for the same cause! 5 Points Forever!
Lainie
@ lainie – I have asked Nomi to connect us on fb. I am banned, again, from requests because I like to connect with people of like mindedness, mainly Copper fans. Thank you! 😀 <3
