FOX is consciously uncoupling with its new reality show. Mark Burnett’s Coupled TV show on FOX has been cancelled after its first season, Deadline reports. Participants on Coupled, season one, included: Terecia Baker, Ashley Reitz, Lisa Rotondi, Michelle Tam, and Lindsey Tuer.
Terrence Jenkins hosted the Caribbean-set dating series, which followed 12 single, young, professional women on their quest for love. Coupled‘s two-part season one and TV series finale aired Tuesday, August 2, 2016 and only earned a 0.40 in the 18-49 year old viewer ratings demographic. Overall, the first season averaged 0.45 in the demo and drew an average total audience of 1.274 million viewers.
In Coupled, the female participants had first choice to decide if they felt a spark of chemistry and wanted to spend more time with a man. If not, they waited for the next one to come along — much like a bus. Once they coupled up, the new love-matches had to ascertain whether or not they were compatible enough to form lasting relationships.
All of the women and men had cell phones and were allowed to text during episodes. Their text conversations appeared on screen, giving viewers a look at the real drama.
Here is more, from Deadline:
“It’s hard to say exactly what didn’t work,” Fox TV Group chairman Dana Walden said at TCA today. “It’s a fragile situation when they do work. Mark delivered a beautiful-looking show, that didn’t resonate with our viewers.”
[…]
“It probably felt a little bit too close to other reality shows being done well right now,” Walden said. “There wasn’t any need to do another relationship show on an island.”
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Coupled TV series? Do you think it should have been cancelled or renewed for a second season on FOX? Tell us!
I wish coupled was never cancelled.. Loved the show.
It should never be cancelled. It was gorgeous!
I was really upset as well to find out that Coupled was cancelled I would always watch it! Even if i missed an episode on tv I would watch it online. One of my favorite shows. Now I just rewatch Old episodes wishing a Season 2 would start
I was upset about it being cancelled I was hoping to go on the show I loved it and the concept of it!
Really sad that Coupled was cancelled!!! One of the few shows that I loved to watch!
What! Sad to hear this show was canceled. Me and my girlfriends would get together and watch with freshly popped popcorn and margaritas. Now… I’m done watching FOX. I’m really tired of them canceling good shows. Goodbye…
Why is it that a show with an African-American host and non-white characters always get canceled? This was a great show! People of color still have a long way to go when competing with non-colored people. Terrence J was an intelligent, handsome hosts. It’s really sad and I’m sad this show was canceled.
Over a million viewers isn’t enough to keep a show on the air? Bad decision to cancel this show. Mark Burnett doesn’t make bad shows. I agree, it was bad marketing and a bad time slot. Friday or Saturday would have been better. Very few shows interest me. This one was my favorite.
I loved the way it was produced, with beautiful oceanside scenaries, nice people, not too much drama, and just the right amount of romance and fun. I wish more dating shows were made with as much care and balance. It was a hidden gem. If only more viewers knew about it.
I am so upset. I was looking forward to seeing this show a second season. It was a nice reality show on a beautiful island. I was interesting to see how relationship develops and how you have to know when something doesn’t work for you.
I loved Terrence J as the host.
I hope someone else picks this show up on another channel. I would follow. Have you considered to do a follow up show on the contestants to see how they worked together after the island?
Oh I am disappointed! As a single woman in her early 40s with chronic pain, this was my one show a week I so looked forward to. My mom and I enjoyed watching it together. It was an interesting escape that I will miss.
I enjoyed watching Coupled and thought it was great at capturing the different ways relationships grow or fizzle out – such a change from the format of a show like Bachelorette, which I find quite contrived and superficial. Shame there isn’t going to be a season 2.
I think coupled was a refreshing new take on reality dating. I was really looking forward to the next season. I hope that another network will trenew/take it over.
I loved the show. Unfortunately it was the only Fox show I did enjoy. So ending the series ended this viewer turning the channel to Fox. Since you can’t manage 1 show that interests me…the chances of me ever watching Fox again is very unlikely. Word of mouth would have gained more viewers if you had given it time.
We LOVE this show!!!!!! I think it just had poor marketing…no one had heard of it to watch. I love how mature and grown up this show is instead of the typical dating shows that use the annoying immature drama to gain ratings. Definitely losing out by canceling this show!!!!! My fiancé and I were hooked!!
