Like its namesake, NBC’s newest high-adventure series has had a rocky journey. The network believed in the Crusoe TV show enough to give it lots of promotion — airing dozens of commercials during its Summer Olympics coverage and erecting a “treehouse” in the middle of New York City for a publicity stunt. At the same time, they saddled it with a Friday night timeslot, one of the least-watched nights of television. Did the series ever have a chance for survival?
Crusoe is based on the Robinson Crusoe novel by Daniel Defoe, first published in 1719. The series follows the adventures of a young man, Robinson Crusoe (Philip Winchester), who leaves his wife, Susannah (Anna Walton), and children to embark on a high-seas adventure. He hopes to find enough riches to settle his impending debts. Crusoe ends up stranded on a remote tropical island where he rescues and befriends a native named Friday (Tongayi Chirisa). While trying to find a way off the remote island, the two must battle the elements and intruders for survival. Crusoe also features Sam Neill, Sean Bean, Mia Maestro, Mark Dexter, Emma Barnett, Jake Curran, James Lauren, James Middlemarch, and Lorcan O’Toole. Featuring lots of special effects and costumes, the series was filmed in South Africa.
The TV show debuted on October 17th on NBC. The Crusoe two-hour premiere attracted a modest 7.38 million viewers. It placed second in total viewers for the first hour and for the second hour, it moved up to first place. Unfortunately, the show was third in the all-important 19-49 demographic with a 1.6/5 rating/share. That means that, overall, it drew an older audience which isn’t what the network needs or wants. Taking into account all of NBC’s promotion, this wasn’t a very good start for the historical drama.

The following weeks’ ratings didn’t bring better news. The second episode dropped to 6.09 million viewers and a 1.3/4. The third week’s episode dropped almost a third of its viewers and brought in just 4.09 million and a dismal 0.8/3 rating/share. The TV show’s ratings hit a slight upturn for two weeks but last week’s episode hit an all-time low of 3.56 million viewers. That’s less than half of the premiere’s total audience.
After seven episodes (five hours plus the two-hour premiere), NBC has decided to relocate Crusoe to Saturday nights beginning December 5th. This move will cause viewership to drop even further and it’s a sure sign that the network has given up on Crusoe.
So, is Crusoe a regular TV show or a mini-series? Most of the network’s press materials have treated it like a regular TV series but, on NBC’s website, Crusoe is referred to as a “high-action, fast-paced, thirteen-part series.” (A representative for the network declined to clarify.) With a mini-series, viewers could be assured of a conclusion to the storyline. In the case of a regular series, closure is less likely. Either way, Crusoe is coming to an end.
Unfortunately for the show’s loyal audience, it’s nearly impossible to think that NBC will renew the costly series or produce any additional episodes. In terms of viewer demographics, it’s been a disappointment from the start. On the positive side, the network will very likely finish airing all 13 episodes. For now, it looks like the remaining six episodes will air on December 6th, December 20th December 27th, January 10th, January 17th and, as a finale, January 31st.
Will the last episode show Crusoe returning to his family or will loyal viewers be left stranded with him? Stay tuned!

I like Crusoe but I hope they do just do the 13 episodes. After all, how many episodes can you have where they *almost* get off the island? How many people can keep coming to the island but somehow leave Crusoe and Friday behind? And how many more secret burials or caves or camps can they find before before it becomes “Gilligan, drop those coconuts!” I’d love for a self-contained, interesting story with a great ending to actually wrap up the story. I don’t think a show like Crusoe can go on for 50 or 100 episodes–their ultimate goal is… Read more »
I’ve been watching this show, but it is very campy and just plain lame at times. If it was done more as a drama and not so silly, I think it would have made it.
This is one of the most refreshing shows I have seen in quite a while. The last show I was so interested in was “Firefly”, which I recommend anyone here to check out as well. “Crusoe” offers action, with an engaging storyline and beautiful scenery. It mixes innovation with entertainment and has been likened to “‘McGuyver’ with a hint of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean'”. The deserted island, pirates and the curiosity of older times all make this show amazing. It’s one of the few modern shows I watch anymore. Many slots are being freed due to cancellations, and luckily many… Read more »
My husband and I love this show. We looked forward to “date” night, ordering pizza in and sitting in front of the TV to watch Crusoe. Please don’t cancel Crusoe, finally something decent to watch Friday nights…well, we figured out quite by accident it was moved to Saturday nights and we were able to still watch it. BTW, we watch My Own Worst Enemy and I watch Lipstick Jungle too. Crusoe and My Own Worst Enemy were the only tv shows my husband and I watched together and now it is being cancelled??? Noooooooooooo! Guess he’ll go back to SciFi… Read more »
This is such a great show. I’m a college kid, and this happens to be what my roomie and I look forward to every week. We both love the fact that this is a good, clean series with the good morals that seem to lack in any other show out there. And both of us being majors that take up time (premed/psychiatry for me, and art therapy for her), we have no time on Fridays to go out. This is a great break from the school life. An awesome show. It deserves a chance in a good time slot –… Read more »
How can people 18-49 watch this show if it’s on Friday or Saturday night. This show would do much better if given a chance on a better night.
Same ol’, same ol’. And networks wonder why no one is watching?
I hope this shows gets teh shot it deserves. I agree with everyone else….a show with no swearing, sex, nudity, gangs, medical emergencies that some stupid interns can figure out…..it is a good quality show that I REALLY enjoy. OH did I mention that I am in the demographic that they don’t want to hear from. NBC…grow up. It’s time we left the teeny boppers behind and understood that us older guys and gals enjoy watchinfg TV and it’s us older gus and gals that allow those teeny boppers to watch your network. Yes it’s true….we do carry all the… Read more »
They should just move the show to Wednesdays alongside with Life.
THIS SHOW IS FRIGGIN AWESOME!!!!
It has everything; hot guys, a love story, true friendship, chases, escapes, thrills, action, adventure, pirates, & sword fights plus Philip Winchester (Robinson) & Tongai Arnold Chirisa (Friday) are hilarious & a couple of hotties! I can’t wait to see the next episode every week! Please don’t cancel it!
Two words for Crusoe.
PLOT HOLES
This show just does things that makes less sense than Heroes. And there are magic powers in Heroes.
For example, what happens to the wife and daughter of the captain who Friday rescues in the fourth episode. He is just hides them in the forest and they are never seen again. Do wolves eat them?
It’s hard to decide which NBC show has more plot holes, Knight Rider or Crusoe. Both of them are getting cancelled. Sadly, I still watch both of them weekly. 🙂
Lately, I have been surfing the channels in vain for a good entertaining show. I finally happened to see the episode of ‘Crusoe’ , where the pirates land on the island, looking for buried gold. What a good action-filled show! If that is an indication of the other shows in this series, I really hope that it continues for a long time!
Keep this show around… It is awesome. I don’t do anything during this show. It will stay that way even on Saturday. It should be switched with Heroes…
When they finally have a family friendly show with high morals, the network throws it to the ends of the earth in broadcasting it first on Fridays; and now on the never-never land of Saturdays. Wake up Networks! Give a great show a chance by placing it in Prime Time with established shows as a lead-in.
I’m iffy about whether I like Crusoe or not. I’ve been watching it, and I love the lead actor as well as Friday. However, there’s just something that’s not grabbing me about the show.
Please do not let the network cancel Crusoe. We love it at our household. It’s so rare these days to watch something besides cops & robbers, druggies, lawyer and medical shows. This is so entertaining without such serious topics that are on know. It takes us away from life for awhile. It’s fast and fun to watch.
