Next week, TNT’s Dallas will complete its third season — the first full one without JR Ewing. How’s the TV show done in the ratings? Will it be renewed for a fourth season or will it be cancelled instead?
Airing on Monday nights, Dallas continues to follow the machinations of the dysfunctional and powerful Ewing clan. The cast includes Josh Henderson, Jesse Metcalfe, Jordana Brewster, Julie Gonzalo, Brenda Strong, Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray, Mitch Pileggi, Emma Bell, Kuno Becker, and Juan Pablo Di Pace.
The third season began airing in late February and the first episode was down by 11% when compared to the second season opener. That was a reasonable decline but then the second installment dropped by 27%. The numbers dropped even lower as the season progressed.
Year-to-year, Dallas is down by 26% in viewership and down by 38% in the 18-49 demographic. It’s one of TNT’s lowest-rated scripted series and that’s not a good sign for the show’s future prospects. It also has a large cast so that means it’s not a cheap series either.
On the positive side, there’s some financial incentive to keep the show going. Dallas is produced by Warner Horizon Television which, like TNT, is part of the Time Warner corporation. Also, at the end of season three, there will only be 40 episodes. That’s not enough for a syndication package so if the execs are on the fence about whether to renew or cancel, that could work in the show’s favor.
I suspect that TNT will renew Dallas for a fourth season but, with ratings like these, the show could certainly be cancelled.
But, what do you think? Have you grown tired of the new Dallas TV series? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season?
Update: TNT has cancelled Dallas after three seasons. Details here.
You must be kidding! We just finished watching these newer episodes 1-3 and they are fantastic!! They are probably more intense (in general) than the previous one’s which I would think would make them more popular with TV viewers. I’m really surprise to learn of such low ratings–there must be more to it. Yes, we need a season 4, if only to see what happened to Christopher and the exploding car. Very nice production–excellent writing staff!!!
Just expounding on someone else’s comments. The lower ratings must be that the original episodes were on prime time TV. Also, we have an included new generation of viewers which probably don’t understand what the series is about, to begin with.
My grand daughter and I enjoy watching DALLAS! We want DALLAS to return ASAP! I have been watching DALLAS from day one and dearly MISS the new generation of Ewings on DALLAS. John Ross is more evil than his father J.R. Ewing ever was in the original DALLAS. I would also like to see John Ross outdo J.R. Please bring this show (DALLAS) back. It made Monday nights exciting for not just me but, my grand daughter too. I don’t care what station picks up DALLAS. They have an awesome cast of young actors as they did in the original… Read more »
I loved the first Dallas .This one is taking it to the next level.PLEASE Bring it back.
The story line was amazing. Can’t wait to see it continue.
I really think you should consider moving it to one of the prime time channels especcially channel 7 on Thursday nights or Sunday night also. I think the ratings would increase
The show was well donr.. bad move to just cancel it. Very bad.for me..well it was the best series ..drama..suspense..non predictable..thrilling..jaw dropping stuff 9n the show. Bad move by tnt to cancell it.sell the rights to other chanels or jusy bring it back
I think the show should have been renewed for one more season so that all the loyal viewers were not left hanging. I enjoyed the show the first time around and I loved it this time.
I loved this Dallas as well. I hope it comes back someday soon.
If TNT had advertised Dallas more it would have been a huge success! Finally a show that’s not centered around crimes or “reality” garbage. This show had great actors, amazing plots, and I miss it soooo much. I don’t usually comment on this stuff but it made me so mad to find out that Dallas is off the air 🙁
I was upset as well when Dallas was cancelled. One of the best shows on the air….
I hope it returns again someday soon.

I miss the show very much. it made my night. there is so much junk on TV at night now and I always looked forward to Dallas. I thought the cast was incredible and there are so many storylines left and now I am left hanging. please consider a season 4na better time slot or day. I miss Dallas.
I love dis series. Pls continue season 4 . It cant end like dis .dr has 2 b mre .
The original Dallas was the best night time soap series ever produced! And the TNT follow-up series echos that same quality. I agree with the other comments, that if given a better time slot there would be a bigger audience. Give it a shot for one more season, to at least “tie up” loose ends. The cast on Dallas TNT is one of the best on all of television, and they deserve another chance – give ’em one last try!
Hell I always love thats show & I sure hope they bring it back!!
I grew up with Dallas and love this continuation of their kids. Bring it back! Let there be a fourth season of Dallas.
THIS IS SERIES THAT ALOT OF US GREW UP WATCHING FROM THE BEGINNING AND NOW WITH THE CHILDREN GROWN UP WHATS THE EWING FAMILY UP TO KNOW. BUT FOR TNT TO CANCELLED AND LEAVING EVERONE HANGING. ADVERTISE THE SHOW LIKE YOU DID WHEN THE SERIES WAS BEGINNING AND FIND A BETTER TIME LINE FOR THE SERIES. BRING IT BACK
putting new dallas on at midnight in uk tv will not get the viewers
this is a brilliant show poorly advertised and give a rotten time slot
Please bring it back.
I have watched Dallas for years and thoroughly enjoyed the show on TNT.
Have been watching TNT listings, but to no avail. Now I find the show
was canceled. What a bad move by TNT. Perhaps with more advertising
for the upcoming season, lots more people would’ve tuned in. Surely
was a suspenseful story line and now we are all left hanging. Not happy
with the move on TNT. Please reconsider such a great show with a
unforgettable cast.
