Season one of Damien just ended, so what’s next? Glen Mazzara, showrunner of the freshman A&E series, recently spoke with Blastr about the future of the horror drama.
Based on The Omen film series, Damien stars Bradley James as Damien Thorn, a war photographer with a Satanic past. Barbara Hershey, Omid Abtahi, Megalyn Echikunwoke, and David Meunier also star.
When discussing the end of season one, Mazzara said season two will hopefully draw out the parallels between Damien and Christ:
There’s always a lot of parallels between Christ and Damien. It’s not that there’s a one-to-one correlation, this character is this figure or this event is that from the Bible. In the biblical Christ story, we’ve taken those characters and put layers on each of them in some of our characters. I don’t ever want to be a specific correlation, it’s always layers. In the end scene, a lot of people drop to their knees but what’s Shay crying about? Damien raising Simone from the dead or is he crying about Simone coming back to life? What is the miracle? It’s complex and it’s something that needs to be sorted out in hopefully Season 2.”
He added that elements of the second season have already been set up:
We just wanted to set stuff up for Season 2, I don’t really like to do cliffhangers, especially with Damien, but we do like to set stuff up. It’s a very dark, bleak episode. So that hand coming out of grave is such a beautiful, horror movie image, how could we not do that? We also wanted to set up the Vatican Death Squad. [Laughs] These guys are finally mobilized and are coming in.”
And while Damien has not officially been renewed yet, Mazzara says he has “hope”:
That’s being discussed between A+E and Fox 21 Television studios. I know I’m excited about it, and we have a great creative team of directors, writers, and actors who are ready to get back to work. I have a lot of ideas (see above) for what that season is, specific episodes and character arcs, I just hope we get that opportunity.”
What do you think? Did you watch season one of Damien? Do you think it should be renewed?
This is a great tv show and I really hope you with do so. All my fiends watch it.
An excellent production with brilliant writing and the actors are spot-on!!! This show was the BEST drama on television during its run. I sincerely hope that bring it back for Season 2!!!
Definitely needs at least one or two more seasons, cheers
Love the show. Please renew!!!!!
As a child, I remember watching the Omen and being scared out of my wits but LOVED it!!! When Damien started, I find it more intriguing and at the edge of my seat with each episode. It is very well thought out, the characters are great, especially Damian! I also love the fact you brought Barbara Hershey back. I truly hope that this series continues…I love it and will continue to love it. Thank you!!!
I absolutely loved this show. I was on the edge of my seat while watching every episode. Great writing, Great directing, Great acting. Please renew for season 2!
I thought this show was great. The old lady creeped me out something major. Hope we get a season 2.
Damien is a GREAT show! Very well done, excellent story telling and imagery, fantastic cast… what’s not to like?? BRING IT BACK!! This story is not done yet…..
I have watched the “Omen” over and over. Love “Damien”. Every episode keeps me at the edge of my seat. Been waiting for a show this exciting with all it’s twists and turns. Can’t wait to see what happens in season 2.
Awesome show!! Loved it!! I so hope there is a Season 2. Can’t wait..
Awesome show I was waiting for a show like this for a long time Thank you!! Excellent casting and characters, the references to the movie, I can’t think of any way to make this show better!!!
Great Show, But has anyone noticed how many and how much sympathy for the devil there is on these new shows ?
If your comparing this to Lucifer you are way off!! This is dark!!! I dont care if he Damien becomes full fledged Satan and then is killed!! This definitely deserves a second season. What other shows are you talking about, especially on A&E!??!
This show is about the internal struggle of being good and evil.
Many people back Damien into a corner and then he becomes evil. I see many parallels in the human struggles.
I love this show.
While ratings are imporrant, I’d like to point out the show has MANY international fans. Bates Motel already aired in several different countries, Damien is only just starting to. You can’t really compare a show in its 4th season to a show in its first season. And you might wanna consider Damien’s lead is British, therefore it’s to expect to have many UK followers. Btw, ratings for Bates Motel are dropping as well. Plus that show gets way more advertising than Damien.
I,m British and it does have an audience ove here. Big fan of the Omen Trilogy and in this first series more depths to Damien,s character has created a compelling one. Has anyone else through the series struggled with the fact that there’s sympathy for him.
Most definitely it was well written, directed and acted. It honored the history of the 3 original movies, while giving us original material.
I’ll be surprised if this is renewed… Especially considering how low the ratings were and the fact that it could barely retail 25% of a strong lead-in’s audience like Bates Motel.
I hope it gets renewed for another season. As a life-long fan of the Omen films, I love how the series expand the mythology of the first five films, but keeps it grounded in reality.
Comparing to what else Aaron&E has to offer!!??!!
