A BBC America sci-fi detective comedy, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency stars Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood, Jade Eshete, Hannah Marks, Mpho Koaho, Fiona Dourif, Dustin Milligan, John Hannah, Amanda Walsh, Michael Eklund, Osric Chau, Viv Leacock, Zak Santiago, Tyler Labine, Izzie Steele, Alan Tudyk, Alexia Fast, Agam Darshi, and Aleks Paunovic. The cast also includes Karin Konoval, Lee Majdoub, Ajay Friese, David Allen Pearson, Christopher Russell, and Anja Savcic.
The story centers on Dirk Gently (Barnett), an eccentric time-traveling “holistic detective” and his reluctant sidekick, washed up rocker Todd Brotzman (Wood). A collection of wild and dangerous characters further infiltrate and complicate their world. In the second season, threats from the magical realm of Wendimoor are beating a path toward earth. It’s up to Dirk Gently and crew to shut them down — right after they find each other.
Season Two Ratings

Telly’s Take
Season two of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency premiered to much lower ratings than its freshman outing but they have remained pretty consistent. As long as the talent wants to continue, I suspect the series will be renewed for a third season. I’ll keep an eye on the Nielsens and update this page with breaking developments. I just watched season 2 finale. I can’t believe such a great show gets to be cancelled! It’s just unbearable how easily and frequently TV shows gets to be cancelled lately, but this one?! I was waiting for a second season for a year and can’t wait for season 3 and this cancellation news just ruined my day…
I loved this show. Very disappointed by the sad news there won’t be a third show. The story has only just begun. I watched the show in quick succession recently. Very saddened by this news
Crazy to cancel this show, it was not advertised very good in UK. People are just discovering it. I only just watched s01 and 2 in the last 3days never knew it existed. A season 3 will bring better tv rating specially with better advertising. UK people live for shows like this if they get too know about it. This show needs to be reconsidered for a 3rd season

My family simply lives the show!
My family loved both seasons of Dirk Gently. It’s the one show we all watch collectively and we had to force ourselves not binge watch on BBC. So disappointed not to see it renewed … I have to say that I’m a bit of a BBC snob and I watched the British version and although I liked it, I didn’t love it as much as I loved this version with BBC America. I think it’s great as does my family. I do hope someone else picks it up but maintains the humor, quirky story line and of course the cast!
My family has been greatly enjoying the Dirk Gently series, and was crushed to hear BBC wasn’t renewing a third season. We hope that Netflix picks it up and continues.
I personally felt the second season was well done and showed character growth /developement. And that’s really what is the best part of the show. The characters are why I can’t stay away.
Dirk Gently is absolutely brilliant, creatively written, mysterious, mind-boggling, fun, and hilarious! I am very disappointed, sad, and angry that BBC has decided to cancel this amazing fun-tastic show. Why is it that all fun brilliant shows keeps getting canceled? I noted the summer ratings for Dr. Who and the show’s viewer numbers were less than than Dirk Gently’s! I was surprised that Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency had under 1 million viewers given the high quality of the program. I expect the frequent commercial breaks are a deterrent for some; but most of us record, I imagine. I love the show! The mayhem and the fantastical somehow work in this context that there’s a mystery to be solved. I knew nothing about it when I first watched and still I was totally captivated. Dirk Gently is pure genius, Max Landis has tapped into Douglas Adams’ voice. But we all know, expecially with this show, that people wait to binge shows before they watch. And with such an intricately designed and crafted narritive, where the first episode of each season will only make sense once you have watched the last 2 episodes of each season. BBC has its deal with Netflix, I suggest, like Black Mirror and The Last Kingdom before it, make this show a Netflix, BBC series, it is ment to be binged. I forgot the satellite is extinct now, streaming only. Its price has gone up so I guess that’s why some people don’t know about some shows.
This show is a mess, it is all over the place without a narrative or relatable characters. They have tried to salvage it by amping up the weird but it just does not work.
It does have a narritive, you just have to be patient and all if it is revealed in the end of the first season, there are character arcs and great plots, you just have to be willing to take the journey. First time I watched, it was confusing, but at the halfway mark, it started making sense, and now watching it for the second time, it’s a whole new experience.
Dirk Gently is by far the most unique show around. The writing is brilliant and the characters are relatable… in a world full of magic no less. Across the board, Dirk Gently has had consistent great reviews and I don’t think I’ve seen anything less than a 80%. I would probably stop watching BBC America if they canceled it. Max Landis should have his opportunity to give us fans at least one more season since he’s already had it in his head for years.
This is easily the best show out there. Of course, I thought that “Firefly” was brilliant, too… And I try not to dwell on the fact that “Dancing with the Stars” has been on for what, a thousand years?
Fingers crossed to the max for this awesome show quite unique in its genre and deserving more praise for its writing and cast.
