Is there a future for Downward Dog and The Carmichael Show? Deadline reports the cast contracts for both the ABC and NBC TV series expire soon.
A new ABC sitcom, Downward Dog premiered in May. The comedy centers on Nan (Allison Tolman) and is narrated by her philosophically inclined and rather forlorn dog, Martin (voiced by Sam Hodges). The cast also includes Lucas Neff, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Barry Rothbart, Siovhan Christensen, Ayden Mayeri, and Andrew Gorell.
The Carmichael Show is currently in its third season on NBC. The sitcom loosely inspired by star and co-creator Jerrod Carmichael’s family life and also features Amber Stevens West, David Alan Grier, Lil Rel Howery, and Loretta Devine.
According to Deadline, the cast’s contracts for both series expire on June 30th and so far neither have been renewed for another season. Does this mean both are cancelled? It’s unclear. Ratings for Downward Dog have been okay. So far, season one is averaging a .80 rating in the 18-49 demo and 4.016 million viewers.
Meanwhile, ratings for The Carmichael Show have been steady for the past few seasons. Currently, season three is averaging a .80 rating in the 18-49 demo and 3.668 million viewers. However, even with stable ratings, it’s unclear if NBC will renew The Carmichael Show for a fourth season or if ABC will give Downward Dog a second chance. Either way, the networks and the studios only have a few days to decide.

Downward Dog has gotten better each week. Just when you think you’re watching a “dog” show, it throws in little thoughtful gems of life that we all could use.
i love this show. In world filled with so much anxiety Martin is this generations Mr Ed. Don’t take Martin Away!

Downward Dog is a wonderful and charming show I absolutely love it! This show needs to be given a chance it is smart and funny.

It’s Funny, Witty – and especially Wise for any age and we have people over to watch it weekly over a nice meal. It’s so refreshing to see a network thinking innovatively and it’s the high point of the
tv week – a wonderful dinner party everytime.

I do not watch either. Saw Carmichael Show once but not impressed, but I am 68 years old and the networks don’t care what people my age watch.
I am 73 and love both these shows. Some of us oldsters have a different sense of humour than others, I guess.
I’m 64 & also love both these shows. Carmichael does discuss the “tough” subjects with dignity. Dog also touches on how hard it can be to make choices & then live with them. Martin is great, as is the voice of the actor providing Martin his voice. The general laziness and apathetic inflection is spot on. Please keep both
I freakin’ LOVE Downward Dog! Please renew it! It’s sweet and really funny – that Martin is such a charmer! My dog watches it with me and my husband and he’s glued to the front of the TV set while it’s on.
I watch the Carmichael show and enjoy it, but didn’t care for Downward Dog.
Both deserve a another season my son and I both enjoy each show . Plus my dog Chunky watches Downward Dog I truly mean it. When it’s on he is glued to to tv .
I actually don’t generally like sitcoms, but DOWNWARD DOG is charming. I hope they pick it up.
I just watched Downward Dog for the first time last night. I had never heard of it – I found it just by accident. I LOVE this show. I told my husband we have to watch them all on demand. It is SO good – please don’t cancel Downward Dog !!!
Everyone i know LOVES MARTIN so much. Please keep the show – it is perfect for animal lovers who understand their pets and it teaches all of our children how to treat animals kindly. Thank you ABC – this is FUN for young and old and we look forward to Tuesday nights and never forget 8 PM ET Downward Dog – it is original, smart, touching and truly a classic – – unlike any other show. We will be heart-broken if you cancel it.
