Is there a future for Downward Dog and The Carmichael Show? Deadline reports the cast contracts for both the ABC and NBC TV series expire soon.
A new ABC sitcom, Downward Dog premiered in May. The comedy centers on Nan (Allison Tolman) and is narrated by her philosophically inclined and rather forlorn dog, Martin (voiced by Sam Hodges). The cast also includes Lucas Neff, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Barry Rothbart, Siovhan Christensen, Ayden Mayeri, and Andrew Gorell.
The Carmichael Show is currently in its third season on NBC. The sitcom loosely inspired by star and co-creator Jerrod Carmichael’s family life and also features Amber Stevens West, David Alan Grier, Lil Rel Howery, and Loretta Devine.
According to Deadline, the cast’s contracts for both series expire on June 30th and so far neither have been renewed for another season. Does this mean both are cancelled? It’s unclear. Ratings for Downward Dog have been okay. So far, season one is averaging a .80 rating in the 18-49 demo and 4.016 million viewers.
Meanwhile, ratings for The Carmichael Show have been steady for the past few seasons. Currently, season three is averaging a .80 rating in the 18-49 demo and 3.668 million viewers. However, even with stable ratings, it’s unclear if NBC will renew The Carmichael Show for a fourth season or if ABC will give Downward Dog a second chance. Either way, the networks and the studios only have a few days to decide.

I love quirky shows, and Downward Dog is quirky. I love this show…especially Martin, what a find at the shelter, eh? Please don’t cancel it, give us quirky quirk lovers a chance for a change.
My Mom & I actually both watch The Carmichael Show & Downward Dog. Because, We both think those shows are So funny & We don’t want to see neither one of them get cancel, NBC & ABC Please renew both shows??? Because, The Carmichael Show deserves to get 4th Season & I think people should Just give Downward Dog a chance Because, So far It’s pretty good show & The dog & The storylines are funny & If both of these shows don’t get renew & NBC & ABC decided to cancel It??? I absolutely Love downward dog!! I have started telling friends about it and they have not heard of it! It is hysterical and sweet. We need more of this on tv!! Please don’t cancel! I know it will catch on! It’s in a crappy time slot.

I love Allison Tillman, the incredible dog and the general premise of their relationship. Everything about the show is likable and compelling. The only distractions are moving the dog’s mouth, which is distracting and unnecessary, and the fact that the dog’s dialog is peppered with “like” which I find extremely irritating and maybe enraging after awhile, and maybe most people over 40 feel the same way.
I’d be an avid fan if these irritating features were absent.
In any event, best wishes for renewal.

PLEASE…DO NOT CANCEL The Carmichael Show!!! I love the characters and more importantly…the way important issues are played out with comedy. It’s similar to a Saturday Night Live in sitcom style! It’s far past time to STOP letting race guide decisions…Come On America, work toward getting it together .

CMT decided not to pick it up. ABC said they didn’t renew it because it was expensive, but they really didn’t renew it because they found out that he was a Conservative and not a Liberal. That means everything these days. What a shame.
I watch both of these shows and like them both. So that maybe the kiss of death. Everything I like ABC cancels.
