A comedy based on the Animal Media Group web series, the Downward Dog TV show centers on Nan (Tolman), and is narrated by her philosophically inclined and rather forlorn dog, Martin (voiced by Hodges).
Martin tells Nan’s story from the perspective of woman’s best friend. The comedy explores the ups and downs of modern-day human life, through the eyes of a devoted dog.
Nan is trying to negotiate a trying job, as well as her unfair, narcissistic boss, Kevin (Rothbart), while dealing with turmoil in her private life. Sometimes, the tumult distracts her from what Martin considers her priorities.
When he can’t have Nan’s undivided attention, Martin feels isolated and neglected and, as a result, acts out. Consequently, the two attend obedience school, which gives them a fresh perspective on the importance of their relationship.
Meanwhile, Nan is trying establish boundaries with her her ex-boyfriend Jason (Neff), while still retaining him as Martin’s dog walker. Rounding out Nan’s circle is her human best friend and co-worker, Jenn (Howell-Baptiste).

What do you think? Do you like the Downward Dog TV show? Should it have been cancelled or renewed for a second season?
Best show on TV, addictive. Only show I’ve ever re-watched episodes just because they were sooo good. Martin by far the best actor on TV! Please someone pick this show up!
I think if they shot this movie from the perspective of Martin growing up with 7 or 8 year old children. The innocence of the children coupled with the storyline of the parents would have appealed more than Nan’s boring storyline. I LOOOOVEED Martin and his perspective on things but I think it would have been better from the perspective of the human children and Martin bonding over how misunderstood they are to their adult counterparts.
PLEASE – someone – pick this show up!!!! It is one of the best shows to come around in a long time!!!
It figures the show has been canceled. It seems like most TV show my husband & I like are gone after one season. Martin is awesome & I love his thought process! Please bring the show back.
I am so bummed this show is cancelled! My husband and I loved watching this show together with our 2 dogs. PLEASE bring this wonderful show back! Every single character is awesome, the story lines are great and of course Martin is the Best!! This is such a wonderful show and fun for the whole family, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!! 🙂
I hate that the show was cancelled.
I absolutely loved this show! I got everyone I work with hooked! If there is a chance to bring it back, take it! It was just hitting its stride! Every character is perfectly cast!
Downward Dog quickly became my favorite TV show. All the actors were good. The writers of the show let you know each character personally and you could see why Nan needed Martin. He was there for her every Friday night when she cried into her wine. And, Martin was from a shelter here in Chicago. It was good to watch a show with an intelligent humor rather than all the shows with nothing but one-liners with a laugh track. Please get this show back on.
This was such a good show, and for all it’s lightness, I feel like I do have a better insight on what a dog is-or is not-thinking when it looks at me. Too bad ABC can’t keep producing quality shows like this.
I absolutely loved this show. What a shame it’s canceled.
This show was witty, humorous, entertaining and original, not a re-hash of old game shows which seems to be the formula now.
Hopefully another network will pick this show up and blow ABC out of the water!!!
No,No,No!!! Why cancel a show that is so much better than most of the crappy sitcoms on tv? There is actually thought provoking humor in this show. Come on! Give it a decent chance!
Rating Going Down Every Week Ya A Good Show
This show was hilarious. Definitely should not be cancelled.
Absolutely LOVED this show! I was so sad to see that it was cancelled. Was looking forward to a new season! Bring it back……please?
I LOVED this show! It was so different….a take on life from a dog’s perspective. But, like every other show that doesn’t have sex and violence, ABC cancelled it and I’m sure will replace it with some stupid reality show, or talent show, or what we really need….another cop show! I don’t think ANY show should be cancelled after one season. It leaves the fans without closure. If the network does their homework, they should be airing new shows in a time slot/day when the competition isn’t with an established show. Any new show needs 2 seasons to see if… Read more »
