Last summer, CBS found ratings success with new series Under the Dome. This summer, they introduced Extant, a sci-fi series starring Halle Berry. Has it been a hit as well? Will the series be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled instead?
On Extant, astronaut Molly Woods (Berry) returns to Earth after a year-long solo mission in outer space. Her reunion with her family is thrown into turmoil when it’s learned that she’s pregnant. Others in the cast include Goran Visnjic, Pierce Gagnon, Hiroyuki Sanada, Camryn Manheim, Grace Gummer, and Michael O’Neill.
Debuting on July 9th, the series got off to a decent start and attracted a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.58 million viewers. In week two, the ratings saw a moderate decline which is not unexpected for a new series. Unfortunately, the numbers took a big dip in week three.

The ratings seem to have now leveled off and the show consistently draws a 1.0 rating in the demo with under six million viewers. Those are hardly impressive numbers for an expensive show with a movie star as the lead.
Last year’s Under the Dome was profitable for CBS even before the series aired, thanks to a deal with Amazon and others. CBS has a streaming deal with Amazon for Extant but it’s unclear if that will be enough to get this particular show a second season renewal.
Series creator Mickey Fisher says that he has big plans for season two but has assured fans of a satisfying finale if the show is cancelled. He believes the series has a 50/50 chance.

I really love this show. Halley is an awesome actress. I am just not sure if there is enough material for this show to have a second season. It seems like they are stretching each show, without adding a lot of information. I do hope that it continues though.

Seriously??? Never fails!! I put in all this time to watch Extant and your not even going to have a season 2 so you can at least put a closure to it?????
I like the show – but I agree with previous posters that some dumb decisions are being made by very smart people (take Ethan – even if he is a robot.) I like the closeness of the reality – the show really isn’t all that far-fetched – we are on the cusp of these things – androids, space, etc. I cannot see the show going forever – I would say at least 2 – 3 seasons. I hope they at least give it a season 2.
There is no reason for this show to go into year 2. End it. Let Halle Berry go back to making James Bond or other movies. Homeland should only have been 1-season, now look at what we have. Yes, good acting all around, but the story should only have been for one season.

I really enjoy the show but still feel it should be ended with one season. I worry that a second season would ruin the quality just like what happened with Under the Dome. I would hate to see a really good show turn into a joke.
I love sci-fi (especially space stories) Halle Berry and Steven Spielberg. Honestly, though, I think the story writers began to lose their way after the first 3 episodes or so. It started strong with the space storyline and the robot child. And there were great references to futuristic technology (like the shower scene). All fascinating. Then it seemed as if the pace of the story slowed. Episodes would go by and not much would happen. And the main character has gone from being an accomplished astronaut to being a damsel in distress. Its OK but a little far out there. When its on I really have to talk to myself (so to speak) to decide whether I want to waste my time watching it.
How is it far out there ? Having a life like android really isn’t far fetched just look at the series “Almost Human” on fox set in the year 2048 where every detective is partnered with an Android. If you research Androids the technology is almost there and extraterrestrial activity may not be that far out either. The concepts put forth are potentially a very close reality.
