Kim Todd, the president of Canada-based Original Pictures, has confirmed that the youth drama Falcon Beach has been cancelled after two seasons. The series airs on ABC Family in the U.S. and Global in Canada.
The cancellation comes as a result of ABC Family’s decision to pass on a third season of Beach. Without the financial support of the cable channel, continued production isn’t possible. Todd says that Global offered to pick it up for a third season but at a significantly lower cost than before.
Strangely enough, Beach is being cancelled despite being quite popular. The show’s audience is made up of predominantly 12 to 17 year old girls. Unfortunately, the series failed to attract many outside of that age group and ABC Family wanted a broader demographic; i.e. 18 to 49 viewers.
The cancellation wasn’t a shocker to Todd who said, “You’re never surprised by what happens in series television, because the winds of change blow quickly and forcefully.” That doesn’t make the end result any easier, personally or professionally. Todd lamented, “So nothing is surprising, but it’s still extremely disappointing. In order to produce a television series, you have to invest so much of yourself into the process… And now we have to tell the cast and crew, and that’s disappointing, too, because we’re not the only ones who put their blood and sweat into this.”
Many citizens of the shoreside Lake Winnipeg town will miss Beach as well because it provided great exposure for the town and attracted visitors — from as far away as Japan. The town’s local mayor and restaurant owner Daryl Carry was told of the cancellation on Friday and said, “We’ve had tourists here every summer, coming to see where Falcon Beach is shot… But I guess at the end of the day, it didn’t add up. The money offered isn’t enough. They had to make a decision to pull the plug.”
The second and final season has already aired on Global in Canada. In the U.S., Falcon Beach began airing on ABC Family on April 9th and is expected to conclude on July 2nd. No plans have been released to tie up any ongoing storylines. Stay tuned!
I am 40yrs. old and I love Falcon Beach! Age makes no difference as long as the show is enjoyed…and it is!!I always taped the show because it was on too early (7pm), then I watched it later, when the kids were asleep. Cancelling the show is a mistake!! Bring it back!!
I am devastated! I usually record Falcon Beach with my DVR box! 🙂 I just watched the most recent epi and and just learned they were cancelling; I can’t believe they are cancelling the show! What makes it worse is that they may not even end it properly! That is a terrible way to end show. I am 25 and love it. I try to make sure to always watch it. The story lines and relationships are so easy to get tangled up in! I agree with some of the other comments; how can you expect people to maintain interest… Read more »
Why would they do this? I’m 17 and I watch this show religiously every time it comes on. Isn’t there another way to keep this addicting show on the air for the sake of the people who have fell in love with the loveable characters on the Beach. Please don’t cancel this show I love this and the other faithful viewers who watch this show love it as well and have taken their time to sit down and post a comment about why this show needs to keep airing love this show. Just find another way air it at another… Read more »
I’m 22 and my husband is 25. We have a baby so we don’t watch much tv, but we do watch Falcon Beach. We love it and haven’t missed a single episode. We plan on buying both seasons on DVD as soon as they come out. We’re really mad at ABC Family and don’t plan on watching the station again unless Falcon Beach comes back for a third season.
This is rediculous! My boyfriend and I ( 25 & 31) have watched Falcon Beach since day one of the first season!! I agree that this show if givin a chance could be the next 90210. Also Paige and Jason just got back together you cant leave us hanging like this!! At least do a spinoff!
I’m 48 (49 next week) and I too LOVE this show – I was so shocked when I got up this morning and watched my DVR’d last episode (I had no idea the season/series was over until I watched)and based on all I’m reading here there are a lot of older folks who watch this show and love it who were also shocked to hear of its demise. I don’t watch anything else on ABC Family but this show, so I guess they just lost another viewer. Please bring Falcon Beach back!!!
Yes, I too am 38 years old and love Falcon beach. They should of changed the day and the time when people woud watch it then they would have no reason to take it off .I am really hoping that with enough people getting together will bring the show back they did it for the Jericho show and why not Falcon Beach. Hey maybe a new network even would be GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!! .Keep good thoughts ..
What are they thinking? I am 29 and my husband even watched it with me. He was really caught up with the Mook/Lane issue while I was still hooked on Jason and paige. Most cable networks , tivo and online sites don’t use nelson ratings. How do you know you haven’t met your demographic? You don’t start filming season three!!!!
AGAIN, THERE GOES ANOTHER GREAT SHOW! AFTER WATCHING THE SERIES FINALE, THE SHOW ENDED WITH SO MANY AWESOME PLOT SCENES TO KEEP US HANGIN AND WANTING TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED NEXT! BUT NOW WE’LL NEVER GET THAT CHANCE TO RETURN AND SEE WHAT A 3RD SEASON WOULD OF BROUGHT. HOW SAD THAT A FABULOUS SHOW LIKE FALCON BEACH COULDN’T OF WORKED OUT SOMETHING TO GIVE ITS DIE HARD FANS ANOTHER CHANCE TO MAKE THIS SHOW EVEN MORE POPULAR NO MATTER WHAT TIME SLOT IT WAS IN.A TRUELY GREAT SHOW, THAT COULD OF CARRIED ON FOR WAY MORE THAN JUST 2… Read more »
I wonder who monitors the age of the audience because they are obviously missing us older folks. My husband and I are both 42 and have 4 children (13 & under). With four kids we never have time to watch t.v. with all of their extra-curricular activities. My husband and I watch Falcon Beach every week. Have not missed an episode since show one, Season one. Even if were not here we tape it and then watch it the next time we’re home. I think the season finale could have been much better if it was the end. What a… Read more »
Well I am 26 and i love the show. I even think its alot better than that Kyle show. Please bring the show back. If u dont bring it back on tv…r u still makin the show, like on the dvd or somethin.
I’m 51 and my sister is 52. We have not missed an episode of Falcon Beach since its inception. The networks seem to undermine their own shows. First Falcon Beach showed on Sunday nights at 9:00 p.m., then it was moved to 6:00 p.m. on Mondays, then it was moved to 11:00 p.m. on Tuesdays….and this was all done within the 5 short months in which the two seasons were shown. How can a show possibly succeed and attract a consistent audience when the indecisive, nervous networks don’t give it a chance to thrive? Our compliments to the cast and… Read more »
I am 36 yrs old and I have yet to miss an episode of FB. I watch it with my 17yr old son, my 15 yr old daughter and my 13 yr old son. None of us have ever missed an episode. We all love FALCON BEACH and hope and pray that you will keep it on. There arent many shows left on tv anymore that both the parents and kids like to watch TOGETHER! Maybe yall should think about bringing the family back together….on abcFAMILY!!!!!!
i am 50 yrs old. and i watch the show with my 15 yr old daughter we are both very disappointed that ABC pulled the plug on this show we alway looked forward to viewing this show together it was great family drama and it will be greatly missed. is there any possibilities that the show can continue to be funded and aired once again?
I can’t believe they are takiing it off the air. I’m 32 years old and love it…it is a very cute show…it brings me back to my younger days.. putting it on at 7pm was stupid..who can sit down at that time (especially with kids) and then 12am..that was the worst..they should’ve put it on at 9pm..no wonder they are taking it off…no one could watch it…please keep it going….
