One of the unfortunate bits of news that came out of this week’s upfronts is that FlashForward has been cancelled after just one season. The TV show’s last episode will air as scheduled next week but, can viewers expect some closure?
The story of FlashForward begins as the world’s population blacks out for a little more than two minutes and they “flash forward” to see visions of their lives six months in the future. The series’ ensemble cast includes Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Jack Davenport, Zachary Knighton, Peyton List, Dominic Monaghan, Brian F. O’Byrne, Courtney B. Vance, Sonya Walger, and Christine Woods.
In an interview with EOnline, actress Sonya Walger recently shared that, while there is some closure in the FlashForward series finale, an awful lot is left open-ended. On the positive side, the show does come full-circle from the pilot.
Walger said, “There’s another flash-forward brewing, but it remains to be seen if it happens or not… The finale is just brilliantly written. It’s so satisfying to watch how everybody ends up — or doesn’t — in the positions that they saw themselves in the pilot. Watching these chess pieces move into position so that everyone is where they saw themselves being is ingenious. And by the end of the penultimate episode, they’ve pushed everyone as far away from their final positions as they could possibly be. It’s a brilliant device.”
Walger’s own character, Olivia, will really shift her focus in the final two episodes. She says, “Olivia’s prime concern becomes Charlie, her little girl, and making sure that she’s OK. That becomes her guiding star, not if Mark (Joseph Fiennes) is all right or am I going to hook up with Lloyd (Jack Davenport). In pursuing that goal, all of these other things fall into place.”
What do you think? Do you think that you’ll still enjoy the ending of the series, even though all of the questions haven’t been answered?

I love FlashForward. It’s a great show that keeps you thinking and I had really hoped to know why everything happened. I am SO disappointed that I will never find out what this incredible show was all about. There are still millions of people who watch and love this show. If ABC cancels this, why would anyone watch other shows of theirs if we have no assurance it will ever be finished! That goes for V too if it’s going to be cancelled. I LOVE both shows! I agree with Karen, when Lst is done, ABC will need another awesome and… Read more »
Cyndi brings up a great point, if you don’t add closure to these new series that you’ve decided in a “vacuum” to cancel, I for one, along with the millions that were still tuning in each week, will be reluctant to watch the next new series! ESPECIALLY on ABC!!!
V is ok, I could have watched that series go away instead of FlashForward….it’s because of these shows that I started watching ABC again….too bad ABC, you didn’t know what you had.
V is such a bore. Same plot revisted every episode. Flash Forward was well written, packed with a lot of action and believable characters. Why would ABC blunder another terrific show that already has it’s targeted fan base? I guess we’ll just keep guessing.
I am fed up of American TV trying for these over elaborate multi year story lies, only to see the programs cancelled before they are resolved. I have invested too much time in some programs (Invasion, Flash Forward, The Nine) to have my life wasted by the fickle decision of an TV programmer who feels that the next big thing is a reality show. Every time I see a new American series advertised on UK TV, my first thought is no longer “that looks good”, it is “whats the point as it will last one series and then be left… Read more »
I think ABC is so stupid because A. They canceled a awesome show and B. I think one hour of the finale isn’t long to tell the whole story 2 hours would have been better. C. I do hope that the channel that was the first to be brought up HBO maybe the producers of FlashForward can talk to HBO about having a 2nd season on their channel since dumb ABC cancel the show..
This is straight bull..I loved that show and looked forward to seeing it every thrusday…I will miss it
i cant imagine the show end without a good ending or explanation about the cause of flashforward….so i hope it will be a good ending fro season 1,…since there aint no season 2..
What is wrong with you ABC? Another great show canceled? I’m surprised “LOST” made it so far. Please reconsider a second season at least to see where the storyline goes. Once LOST goes, there will be a void that Flashforward can readily fill…..Think about it!
I think that the networks should consider filming an alternate episode, particularly for serial plots, that would wrap up any loose ends in the event that the show is not renewed. Otherwise, viewers are going to become discouraged and not invest their time in a new show for fear that it will be canceled. This has happened with numerous shows that I have been interested in, such as 4400, Invasion, Flash Forward, etc. Not sure what happened this season, but it seems that a lot of solid shows were canceled. I think it has more to do with cutting back… Read more »
I agree with Furyious, with mindless reality shows, and brain numbing rude and crass sit-coms seeming to be the favorite of masses it’s sad that shows such as Flashforward have no chance. I wonder if ratings take into account the number of people like me that either Tivo or catch the series on Hulu and the like… I hope that someday shows with plots involving ethics, altruism, humanity, and honor come back in vogue and cartoonlike shows using sarcasm, apathy, and self absorbed narcissistic characters get cancelled for a change.
It is so sad that ABC is giving this show the heave-ho. The long hiatus, and bad time slot have really doomed Flash Forward. This was an innovative plot with the potential to be the next LOST.
Now there’s nothing to watch on ABC but mindless reality shows, and soap opera-like dramas. Thank goodness I can get Netflix on the TV.
We can expect nothing less from the already internationally famous ABC. What is that, the 4th good show they’ve cancelled in the last two years?
Kyle XY
Boston Legal
Cupid
Eli Stone
Homeland Security
Life on Mars
Now we can add Flashforward and Ugly Betty…
Good going ABC, What goes around will eventually come around, when nobody watches your shows at all, it simply isn’t worth the trouble since cancellation is almost always guaranteed for those shows that demonstrate intelligent story telling
I am truly sorry to see Flash Forward as cancelled, it was an excellent show, but certainly could of used more publicity. I missed the premier episode because I didn’t know it was new. I hope we will be able to see the “finish” of this shows.
I hope that maybe another network picks it up or that they get a chance for some extra episodes to give it a proper ending(like with Jericho and Dollhouse). What happened to networks moving it to another night or timeslot before cancelling the show? I am very disappointed in ABC
