A few years ago, FOX had some of the top-rated TV shows on the air. Now, the network is struggling. Which series will be cancelled and which will be renewed? Stay tuned.
How do the execs decide what to cancel or keep? They look at a lot of different factors but the ratings play a very large role. The higher the ratings, the better chances a show has of surviving.
FOX shows this season (so far): American Idol, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, Backstrom, Bob’s Burgers, Bones, Boom!, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Bullseye, Empire, Family Guy, The Following, Glee, Golan the Insatiable, Gotham, Gracepoint, Hell’s Kitchen, Home Free, Knock Knock Live, The Last Man on Earth, MasterChef, MasterChef Junior, The Mindy Project, Mulaney, New Girl, Red Band Society, The Simpsons, Sleepy Hollow, So You Think You Can Dance, Utopia, Wayward Pines, and Weird Loners.

A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are therefore supposedly harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Which shows are you rooting for? Which one isn’t as big a hit as you thought? Are you hoping any series will get cancelled to make room for something else?
I have to say I really liked the show red band society. Why can’t the networks let shows go on at least 2 seasons before the cancel it. It’s not fair to the public at all.
I’ve been really enjoying Empire, I just hope they don’t try to run it forever.
What I really can’t believe is that Last Man was renewed but Backstrom was cancelled……………………………………… Backstrom was AWESOME!!! The show was fresh, well written and the cast was excellent. It deserved a better shot. I guarantee you that it was growing in viewership and needed to be served up to a more mature audience at a better time You really screwed up FOX!!!!
I love Home Free!! Please renew!!!
Yes! I love Home Free. It is just so funny the build up when the couple eliminated thinks they go home empty handed… Love it! Must renew/
I’ve gotten to the point that I won’t watch ANY new show until I know it will be renewed– I’m sick and tired of getting my heart broken when I find something I love and it isn’t even given a 2nd season. Battle Creek is axed but we have to be subjected to the waste-of-oxygen that is The Bachelor/ette (I know, it isn’t the same network- you get the point, though) into apparent perpetuity— WTF?
I too loved Wayward Pines but, I knew it was a mini series and was supposed to end when it did.
What I hated was the way they ended it, TERRIBLE. I felt sooooo let down. With tons of unanswered questions, at least for me.
I watched it twice to see if I missed anything, and it didn’t help.
It was really good until the end. Then splat……..
Ok, this makes no sense. Brooklyn Nine-Nine has only 3.54 million viewers but is not cancelled and Wayward Pines has more, 3.82 million viewers is cancelled. Makes NO SENSE! Here is one more example, Worlds Funniest Fails renew with on 2.70 million viewers. Isn’t 3.32 million viewers more??? RENEW WAYWARD PINES…THE VIEWERS HAVE SPOKEN!
Not sure why people are saying Wayward Pines was cancelled….it was a MINISERIES…as in, has a set end point. Besides, Matt Dillon is a terrible actor and Fox totally butchered the story.
The demo 18-49 is what matters not the total viewers. This is America. Advertisers won’t pay for old people(above the age 49) watching the show.
WE ALSO LOVED THE SHOW (WAYWARD PINES!!!!)….BUT AT THE END, WE WERE VERY DISSAPPOINTED WITH THE ENDING….WISH YOU GUYS WOULD BRING IT BACK….I ALSO AGREE WITH A FEW OF THE OTHER RE~VIEWERS …WITH LESS VIEWERS ON OTHER SHOWS BEING RE~NEWED…YUK!!!! PLEASE PLEASE BRING BACK WAYWARD PINES WITH MATT ILLION!!!! HE WAS AGREAT ACTOR!!!! THE WHOLE CAST WAS EXCELLENT IN OUR VIEW!!!!
This was the one show I would watch first from everything on the DVR this summer. If Fox drops the show then I am sure another station will pick it up or Netflix. My guess is Fox will dump it and slap the almost 4 million viewers in the face to air some dumb reality show. Over the past few years Fox has become just like the other 3 big commercial networks an forgot it roots during the 1990’s with great shows like the X-Files. I am sure Fox’s current top brass would be canceling the X-Files after one season… Read more »
I hear that X-Files and Heroes are both coming back. It’s strange that shows they are cancelling like Wayward Pines and The Following that are doing better than other shows they are keeping show stupidity in their decisions don’t over ride their brilliant decisions in returning show that have been gone for years.
LOVE Wayward Pines & really hope it gets a 2nd season!
Unfortunately it’s finished… 🙁
They have a great show season 10
and there would be some changes
season11
Ok – a lot of people have commented on the cancellation of Battle Creek. Are the powers that be not listening? Can’t u guys that make these decisions give it another chance. The 2-part finale was sooooo good. Thanks for nuthin’.
I agreee, Battle Creek was one of my favorites too.
