The end is very near for Friday Night Lights — for DirecTV viewers anyway. The critically-acclaimed drama’s last two episodes are scheduled to air on DirecTV’s Channel 101 on February 2nd and 9th. Everyone else will have to wait until spring (or later) to watch them on NBC — or will they?
The fifth and final season of Friday Night Lights is set to be released on DVD on April 5th. That’s well before the series will wrap on the peacock network. Granted, the ratings for FNL on NBC have never been all that stellar but the episodes are already paid for and most of NBC’s programming is ratings-challenged anyway.
Its unclear why NBC-Universal is taking this approach but it may end up being an experiment that’s more lucrative than airing the episodes on TV and then releasing them via a DVD set. It’s available for pre-order at Amazon for just $26.99.
Here’s an ad for the DVD set, thanks to TVShowsonDVD, …
What do you think? Would you buy the season on DVD or wait for NBC to air the final season? An interesting experiment or a marketing mistake?
I am so disgusted that a show of this caliber would be cancelled. I guess we need another cop, doctor or lawyer show! Please bring it back!
It’s unfortunate to see such a great series cancelled after barely getting an opportunity to grow, but i knew going in this was going to be a very niche series they didn’t appeal to the masses….with that said i’m thankfully directtv and NBC have kept it going for a good 2 or 3 more seasons than most networks would have allowed on top of giving us fans the closure with a final season that so few shows with small audiances ever get.
Best show on TV. Show goes by so fast each week.
i would buy buy buy
I look forward to this show every week on DirectTV. Just sad it is ending.
I’ll buy the DVD. I’d rather watch with no ads, 5.1 sound, and nice widescreen video.
If the show had a chance of coming back, by all means, I’d watch on TV to give them the ratings, but for that price, I’ve already pre-ordered
Just got into the show last yr on the peacock and wish I had saw it eariler.
feel bad for NBC but at least the show can wrap up and end on some terrible cliffhanger.
I think this is a good idea. After all, NBC doesn’t need live TV ratings from a show that’s already cancelled, does it? What it ~can~ get, however, are more dollars from fans eager to own and/or at least see the last episodes of the series. They should definitely capitalize on FNL’s fame (such as it is) before the final episodes air on network television. Maybe putting them on DVD will even increase TV viewership later, as word of mouth spreads or as a novelty (to watch your favorite TV show finally end on network television with other fans of… Read more »
What sucks is that this is the last season for one of the best shows on TV. No reason why this show couldn’t make it 8-10 years.
Its a shame this will be the end of the series, I hope it has a great ending at least… Sucked about Tim Riggins at end of last season, should be interesting what happens. Would love the last episode to be about what happens 10 years later or something similar…
