ABC recently unveiled something a bit different — a fairy-tale style musical comedy called Galavant. How’s it been doing in the ratings? Is the series a big success or is it hitting sour notes? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
On Galavant, a dashing hero (Joshua Sasse) once lost the love of his life (Mallory Jansen) to an evil king (Timothy Omundson). It’s now time for him to exact his revenge and restore his “happily ever after” — while singing. The rest of the cast includes Vinnie Jones, Karen David, Luke Youngblood, Ben Presley, Daniel Evans, Stanley Townsend, and Genevieve Allenbury.
The network decided to air the Galavant’s eight half-hour episodes over the course of four weeks, to help fill the gap left by Once Upon a Time while that fairy tale show is on hiatus.
The first pair of episodes of Galavant debuted on January 4th and drew a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.42 million viewers. It was an okay debut in terms of the ratings. It wasn’t a hit but the numbers were on par with Once’s more recent ratings — and they were certainly far better than anything else ABC was airing that night.
In week two, the ratings took a big tumble, falling to a 1.3 in the demo and 4.11 million viewers — likely in part due to the fact that NBC was airing the Golden Globes. The numbers for tonight’s episodes will probably be as bad or worse since they’re airing opposite the AFC Championship game on CBS.
Galavant’s ratings certainly haven’t been anything to crow about but ABC entertainment chief Paul Lee reportedly really likes the program. It’s a compatible time-slot filler for Once, the show was featured at the TCA winter press tour, and Lee noted that, “If Galavant does well over time, you can imagine how much fun the company can have with that.”
Still, while ABC could order a second season of Galavant (series creator Dan Fogelman has teased that the first season ends with cliffhangers), it doesn’t seem very likely based on the ratings.
But, what do you think? Would you like to see Galavant return for a second season or do you think this musical comedy should be cancelled instead?
Most original and freshest thing I have seen on TV in a long time! If it isnt renewed then let the letter campaign begin….
Keep it!
It’s a keeper for new season
LOVE IT! PLEASE RENEW! This show was so much fun. I would definitely watch if it is renewed.
I LOVED this. I actually laughed and it’s a nice break from all the other shows. I love the modern-day related puns too.
They have got to renew the show.
MORE GALAVANT!! Fantastic writing, brilliant cast, funny— and Galavant is gorgeous!! 😉
KEEP GALAVANT!! I LOVED IT!
LOVED this show! I actually laughed out loud, over and over. All the outrageous characters were played so over-the-top by the wonderful actors, they couldn’t have been more perfect. The songs were original, bawdy, and hilarious, and I kept rewinding to listen to them again. I loved how even the characters groaned when more singing started! The guest stars were fabulous, and everyone just seemed to be having so much fun with the whole show. I had to keep the closed-caption on because I couldn’t stand to miss a single line! I thought the entire adventure was stellar, I loved… Read more »
I totally agree about having the episodes and seasons be longer. Also, like you said, ABC finally has a show that I like and they might ruin their chances!
I agree why leave us with a cliff hanger when a second season unfortunately will probably not happen the least they could have done was give a more satisfying ending to wrap up this season. Also I agree why not just make the episodes into a full hour instead of splitting it and why not add just a few more episodes it was too short. Even if it was a trial series it hardly got a chance to be much of anything let alone to be able to continue it. I think it should be brought back in the summer… Read more »
Sign me up for Season 2 . Nice to have something other than Police shows, Zombies and stupid reality shows.
I love Galavant. Although predictable (which is part of it’s charm), it is very funny and entertaining. What a pleasant way to spend the end of the weekend before going back to work on Monday.
MORE! I NEED MORE!! This was a really great show that focused on rather than intense drama, humor and songs. The songs are catchy and my family and I love to watch on sunday evenings. Its a nice break from all the intense drama and crime shows that are always on nowadays.
We watched this show from the beginning… We never watch ABC on Sunday nights anymore, not since the end of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES… I loved this show… We laughed so hard at every episode… And after that cliffhanger, yes we definitely want to see season two…
I implore you to renew the show, as it’s a refreshing valiant comedy I’ve yearned for for some time.
Having now seen the actual finale, I really wish they’d wrapped it up better. Part of the charm the show held for me was my impression that it was going to be 8 episodes and resolved, like a mini series. If it had gotten renewed, surely the writers could come up with some different problems (Princess Isabella’s previous engagement, for example) for a new story line. That said, I am truly going to miss the farce and fun that this show brought to my Sunday evenings for four weeks. I hope ABC decides to re-air it as a summer filler,… Read more »
I’m with you, I thought it was going to be just the eight episodes and done. Recently I have been annoyed to watch several shows that were promoted as being “limited events” or something similar, only to get to the end and have no resolution. I find this advertising tactic deceitful and manipulative. If it’s a series, it should be labeled as such, and not mislead viewers.
Season 2 !!!!!
Please renew! My entire family watches and we all stay on the phone laughing together about everything going on especially some of the lyrics to the songs. Great filler while waiting for Once Upon a Time. It would make the wait that much longer without it. Maybe make them hour long episodes and make it last until OUAT comes back.
