ABC recently unveiled something a bit different — a fairy-tale style musical comedy called Galavant. How’s it been doing in the ratings? Is the series a big success or is it hitting sour notes? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
On Galavant, a dashing hero (Joshua Sasse) once lost the love of his life (Mallory Jansen) to an evil king (Timothy Omundson). It’s now time for him to exact his revenge and restore his “happily ever after” — while singing. The rest of the cast includes Vinnie Jones, Karen David, Luke Youngblood, Ben Presley, Daniel Evans, Stanley Townsend, and Genevieve Allenbury.
The network decided to air the Galavant’s eight half-hour episodes over the course of four weeks, to help fill the gap left by Once Upon a Time while that fairy tale show is on hiatus.
The first pair of episodes of Galavant debuted on January 4th and drew a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.42 million viewers. It was an okay debut in terms of the ratings. It wasn’t a hit but the numbers were on par with Once’s more recent ratings — and they were certainly far better than anything else ABC was airing that night.
In week two, the ratings took a big tumble, falling to a 1.3 in the demo and 4.11 million viewers — likely in part due to the fact that NBC was airing the Golden Globes. The numbers for tonight’s episodes will probably be as bad or worse since they’re airing opposite the AFC Championship game on CBS.
Galavant’s ratings certainly haven’t been anything to crow about but ABC entertainment chief Paul Lee reportedly really likes the program. It’s a compatible time-slot filler for Once, the show was featured at the TCA winter press tour, and Lee noted that, “If Galavant does well over time, you can imagine how much fun the company can have with that.”
Still, while ABC could order a second season of Galavant (series creator Dan Fogelman has teased that the first season ends with cliffhangers), it doesn’t seem very likely based on the ratings.
But, what do you think? Would you like to see Galavant return for a second season or do you think this musical comedy should be cancelled instead?
I love this show. It is funny and different and I’d love to see it continue.
It’s hilarious! Love it. Surprisingly funny. Hope it comes back
Yes…more please! While not perfect….a breath of fresh air based on the rest of primetime tv options! Bring it back.
Definitely more! The songs are great (the queen’s mirror song was my favorite), the lyrics are clever, the cast is fabulous, and the sets and costumes are wonderful. Highly entertaining. Plus we can’t leave Izzy locked up in that dollhouse.
Absolutely love it my kids love it too please don’t cancel it give it some time I think other people will get into it
This has GOT to be reviewed. Even my husband liked it and he doesn’t like anything!
It’s just not fair. Every decent, family friendly funny show disappears. RENEW, RENEW, RENEW, PLEASE RENEW! ABC, look at a demographic usually ignored. We were even willing to tlate the massive amount of commercials in order to watch it when processed!
RENEW! PLEASE!
Please keep it! Love the show.
Absolutely, it should be renewed! It’s clever and witty and entertaining… certainly a departure from the ordinary. Be bold, network executives! Give Galavant a Season 2!!!
KEEP GALAVANT! Perfect filler show during mid-season & again in the summer break! Fun, light hearted, worthwhile TV. Doubling the episodes up is perfect too! Love this ABC, don’t make the same mistake you made with “Selfie” and let go of a ANOTHER thing. Let go of good programming and you let go of your audience & their trust.
…another *good* thing
Galavant is a pleasant change from most shows on TV. It’s funny and unpredictable. I hope it renews for a second season.
More please!!! This was a wonderful, campy show with fun lyrics and good voices. I an so tired of all the “reality shows” and the same old formats. This was a fresh idea and a lot of fun to watch.
This has GOT to be renewed. It’s campy, it’s cheesy, it’s funny, it’s refreshingly original and the cast is spectacular. Tim Omundson and Vinnie Jones are the greatest. Not to mention, we need more Gal!!!
Please….please….please…more…more…more!!! I love this show!
Love it! Fresh! Keep it short the same format – 4 episodes! So it won’t get stale. Love the tongue in cheek writing!
I really enjoyed this show I found it to be both funny and entertaining plus I like the cast. My favorite episode was the jousting one and I think you should do more episodes like that, just fun, good feel, and hilarious episodes. I would really like to see this serious continue and see how it continues to improve over time.
