ABC recently unveiled something a bit different — a fairy-tale style musical comedy called Galavant. How’s it been doing in the ratings? Is the series a big success or is it hitting sour notes? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
On Galavant, a dashing hero (Joshua Sasse) once lost the love of his life (Mallory Jansen) to an evil king (Timothy Omundson). It’s now time for him to exact his revenge and restore his “happily ever after” — while singing. The rest of the cast includes Vinnie Jones, Karen David, Luke Youngblood, Ben Presley, Daniel Evans, Stanley Townsend, and Genevieve Allenbury.
The network decided to air the Galavant’s eight half-hour episodes over the course of four weeks, to help fill the gap left by Once Upon a Time while that fairy tale show is on hiatus.
The first pair of episodes of Galavant debuted on January 4th and drew a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.42 million viewers. It was an okay debut in terms of the ratings. It wasn’t a hit but the numbers were on par with Once’s more recent ratings — and they were certainly far better than anything else ABC was airing that night.
In week two, the ratings took a big tumble, falling to a 1.3 in the demo and 4.11 million viewers — likely in part due to the fact that NBC was airing the Golden Globes. The numbers for tonight’s episodes will probably be as bad or worse since they’re airing opposite the AFC Championship game on CBS.
Galavant’s ratings certainly haven’t been anything to crow about but ABC entertainment chief Paul Lee reportedly really likes the program. It’s a compatible time-slot filler for Once, the show was featured at the TCA winter press tour, and Lee noted that, “If Galavant does well over time, you can imagine how much fun the company can have with that.”
Still, while ABC could order a second season of Galavant (series creator Dan Fogelman has teased that the first season ends with cliffhangers), it doesn’t seem very likely based on the ratings.
But, what do you think? Would you like to see Galavant return for a second season or do you think this musical comedy should be cancelled instead?
Absolutely we need Galavant Season 2! Fresh! Funny! Not since Monty Python or anything Mel Brooks has there been a movie/series like this. I mean seriously! Singing about poison, puke, & diarrhea! More please.
The show is LOL funny. I would like to see it remain airing. Ratings may not reflect online audience – I do not watch shows on tv.
Bring it back! It’s great!
Absolutely love this show. The song lyrics have me in stitches every week as well as the dialogue. Great cast. Please schedule Season 2 so I have something fun and entertaining to look forward to. My comments cover 6 other households as well as my own. We’re hooked on Galavant!
Excellent change of pace… Enjoyable to entire family.
Please bring Galavant back for a second season! I love this show!!
Great show! Different from anything else out there! Please bring it back!
It needs a season 2 . It’s a great filler for when other shows are on break . And it’s funny.
Episode 1 was a drag. It had too much singing. I wasn’t going to give it another chance but my 6 yr old wanted to watch it. I was blown away as it was quite amusing and there seemed to be more story and less singing. Loved the last 7 episodes. We watched them all in one night.
This show is clever and witty. It is a breathe of fresh air relative to the other programs on the major networks right now. I would like to see it renewed. Its a tough time of year to air a new series. Hopefully they will look beyond the numbers when determining whether to renew it or not.
Please bring it back… love this show!!
I need follow-ups on the characters lol
Bring it back!! Our whole family LOVES it!!
I really want to see the second season. Please bring it back. I love the show.
This is my favorite show in a long time. It’s so refreshing having something different. Yes there have been plenty of medieval comedies, but none with the nonsensical randomness and hilarity of Galavant. I don’t know how the ratings aren’t better, I absolutely love this show. Some people may say it’s just too stupid, but I think it’s just right. It’s meant to be a laid back, modern, random comedy and it pulled that off perfectly. A++
RENEW IT PLEASE!!!! BEST SHOW IN MY WEEK!!!! <3
