ABC recently unveiled something a bit different — a fairy-tale style musical comedy called Galavant. How’s it been doing in the ratings? Is the series a big success or is it hitting sour notes? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
On Galavant, a dashing hero (Joshua Sasse) once lost the love of his life (Mallory Jansen) to an evil king (Timothy Omundson). It’s now time for him to exact his revenge and restore his “happily ever after” — while singing. The rest of the cast includes Vinnie Jones, Karen David, Luke Youngblood, Ben Presley, Daniel Evans, Stanley Townsend, and Genevieve Allenbury.
The network decided to air the Galavant’s eight half-hour episodes over the course of four weeks, to help fill the gap left by Once Upon a Time while that fairy tale show is on hiatus.
The first pair of episodes of Galavant debuted on January 4th and drew a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.42 million viewers. It was an okay debut in terms of the ratings. It wasn’t a hit but the numbers were on par with Once’s more recent ratings — and they were certainly far better than anything else ABC was airing that night.
In week two, the ratings took a big tumble, falling to a 1.3 in the demo and 4.11 million viewers — likely in part due to the fact that NBC was airing the Golden Globes. The numbers for tonight’s episodes will probably be as bad or worse since they’re airing opposite the AFC Championship game on CBS.
Galavant’s ratings certainly haven’t been anything to crow about but ABC entertainment chief Paul Lee reportedly really likes the program. It’s a compatible time-slot filler for Once, the show was featured at the TCA winter press tour, and Lee noted that, “If Galavant does well over time, you can imagine how much fun the company can have with that.”
Still, while ABC could order a second season of Galavant (series creator Dan Fogelman has teased that the first season ends with cliffhangers), it doesn’t seem very likely based on the ratings.
But, what do you think? Would you like to see Galavant return for a second season or do you think this musical comedy should be cancelled instead?
Galavant was promoted as a “limited series”, so I wouldn’t be heartbroken by cancellation (although I DO love the show). Renewal would be great provided the PTB could keep it as wonderful as the first season.
renew it its awesome
I loved it!!! Please bring it back!
I thought it was hilarious! The jousting scene was the best! I almost fell off the couch! Please bring it back. Its refreshing and so much fun, just what we needed on TV.
Great Show!!!!!! DVR’d it and have watched it twice again. Caught more comedy stuff every time. Lyrics are absolutely great! A reel hoot!
Please renew this to give it a good ending!!!!!!!!
Please renew!!!! I loved it! I just binged watched all the episodes!
PLEASE RENEW!!! Galavant is one of my favorite shows. Its very different, but somehow I always find myself waiting for the next episode.
I LOVED LOVED LOVED this musical and want a SECOND SEASON yes please!!! It is not a si-fi – horror or hang on the edge of your seat thriller BUT it was fun and laughable to enjoy with every family memeber including the grand children like the good old days of Monty Python and Robinhood Men in Tights kind of fun – I give it ***** (5 stars) for a rating
PLEASE RENEW!!! I just finished watching it (I started late cuz I forgot to record it until half way through) I wish I would have watched it from the beginning to help the ratings cuz it was awesome! I love how incredibly goofy it is, yet it’s funny and its a musical! That’s hard to come by these days!
I want to see what happens so PLEASE RENEW!! 😀
Yes, please renew. It’s funny witty, fresh, with good family entertainment with a nice mix of good adult humor. Casting is good and talent is there.Need more shows like this and less reality, please! Joshua Sasse is perfectly cast asGalavant.
I love this show! It is so nice to have a fun, comedy, musical, instead of another crime or murder show. I have all the shows on dvr and have watched them several time.
I would love to see it return next year. The cast is amazing.
Me Too!!!
I would really like to see it return. Think of all the guests it could have come in for just 1-2 episodes while keeping the regular cast busy. I get very irritated when they have a series and then leave it with cliffhangers and do not leave with a settled ending. I hope they will at least give it one more season. It is a clever idea and one worth pursuing.
Absolutely must be renewed, for ten years…movie quality production with great music, acting, production values…it will continue to draw stars to the show like this season and it will draw a sophisticated, upscale audience…18 to 24 year oilds don’t buy Mercedes, Lexus and BMWs.
Besides, Disney owes its adult audience something beside comic book shows.
Thanks
Bill
We need another season, if only to visit the convent where the nuns have taken a VOW of DANCING! Of course, the boy-king will send his betrothed-the Valencian princess- there to preserve her chastity until they wed, (or until Galavant rescues her).
Please renew the show it’s got a great cast i love the singing it just about to to to an amazing part in the plot TV always kills shows befor they have a chance to develop a cult following this show is great for people who are too old to watch Glee but love musicals and who doesn’t love Prince Charming esk characters
