ABC recently unveiled something a bit different — a fairy-tale style musical comedy called Galavant. How’s it been doing in the ratings? Is the series a big success or is it hitting sour notes? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
On Galavant, a dashing hero (Joshua Sasse) once lost the love of his life (Mallory Jansen) to an evil king (Timothy Omundson). It’s now time for him to exact his revenge and restore his “happily ever after” — while singing. The rest of the cast includes Vinnie Jones, Karen David, Luke Youngblood, Ben Presley, Daniel Evans, Stanley Townsend, and Genevieve Allenbury.
The network decided to air the Galavant’s eight half-hour episodes over the course of four weeks, to help fill the gap left by Once Upon a Time while that fairy tale show is on hiatus.
The first pair of episodes of Galavant debuted on January 4th and drew a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.42 million viewers. It was an okay debut in terms of the ratings. It wasn’t a hit but the numbers were on par with Once’s more recent ratings — and they were certainly far better than anything else ABC was airing that night.
In week two, the ratings took a big tumble, falling to a 1.3 in the demo and 4.11 million viewers — likely in part due to the fact that NBC was airing the Golden Globes. The numbers for tonight’s episodes will probably be as bad or worse since they’re airing opposite the AFC Championship game on CBS.
Galavant’s ratings certainly haven’t been anything to crow about but ABC entertainment chief Paul Lee reportedly really likes the program. It’s a compatible time-slot filler for Once, the show was featured at the TCA winter press tour, and Lee noted that, “If Galavant does well over time, you can imagine how much fun the company can have with that.”
Still, while ABC could order a second season of Galavant (series creator Dan Fogelman has teased that the first season ends with cliffhangers), it doesn’t seem very likely based on the ratings.
But, what do you think? Would you like to see Galavant return for a second season or do you think this musical comedy should be cancelled instead?
Please KEEP!
I just love this show…the music, dancing, humor…I hope it comes back for another season. Trying to find a complete soundtrack too.
I wonder if the ratings are also counting the viewers that watch the episodes on Hulu or on ABC online instead of regular cable.
What intellectual entertainment! Has it all, jokes that are witty and smart, subtle and adult all at the same time. The singers are excellent, especially Timothy Omundson. Bring ’em back and see what evil Madeline can do. Won;t last forever, but maybe one more season. Beats the heck out of Once Upon a Time which should be taken off life support.
Perfectly said. I couldn’t wait for the return of Galavant this year, yet I find myself dreading the return of OUAT. I watch it now more out of obligation, but that obligation is wearing very thin. Life is too short to force yourself to watch a show.
I’m enjoying this second season of Galavant a lot more than I expected to after that lame ending last year. It’s so much fun, and the self-referential in-jokes are adding a new layer of delight for me. Now I’m really going to be sad if it doesn’t get renewed for another season, because it’s brightening my winter so much!
I’m quite happy that Galavant is back for a second season. It’s combination of slapstick comedy, clever movement, and we’ll-performed lyrics makes our family look forward to each show. The casting is a superb mix of seasoned talent and new stars-to-be-famous, who perform with just the right amount of campiness and all-out ham.I hope it’s seasons run forever!
I’m kinda dissappointed this show got renewed…
Please bring back this refreshingly different show
Yay, it will be back for five weeks starting in January!
Yes!!!!! In a world full of drama,, this has been a great relief. Can’t wait for season two!!!!
I enjoyed Galavant , and looked forward to watching it every week. Its run was far too short, and I would love to see it come back. I’m sure I’m not the only one who wants to see it get another chance. Is there a possibility of this happening? I hope so.
Sincerely,
Ellen Smith
YES YES YES YES!!! Galavant is my favourite show and I will die if they cancelled it! PLEASE CONTINUE TO MAKE SEASONS!!!!
would love to see this return
I’m kinda shocked I’m the first to enter this in, but hey, whatevs. Everyone that checks this site, Galavant has been renewed for a second season because yes Virginia, there IS a santa, and also it’s awesome with perfect casting, perfect cameos, perfect music numbers, etc, Gabby No!
Everybody we know…adults and kids loved it.
I thought it was quirky and funny 🙂 and a great escape from the war And violence in the world everyday!
this is an awesome show! we need this type of brilliant comic relief. the famous guest stars are a wonderful and welcome addition and are extremely talented. the incorporation of whimsical broadway-style musical pieces is not only hilarious, but very well written composition-wise.
please! please! don’t cancel this show.
Please continue this delight. We don’t watch much non-PBS but this we watched. A delightful change from the usually disfunctional family/crime/vampire/contests/awards drivel/sports.
