There won’t be a third season of Disney XD’s animated mystery series, Gravity Falls. The series is coming to an end but the show’s creator, Alex Hirsch, says that it wasn’t cancelled.
It was apparently his decision to bring the story to a close after two seasons. The penultimate episode, titled “Weirdmageddon II: Escape from Reality”, airs tomorrow. The one-hour series finale, “Weirdmageddon III”, will likely air in early 2016.
In a heartfelt message to fans, Hirsch wrote:
There’s no easy way to say it so I’m just going to say it: Gravity Falls is coming to an end. There are two more episodes left: “Weirdmageddon II: Escape from Reality” and “Weirdmageddon III” which will be our hour long series finale. After that, Gravity Falls as we know it will be over.
I know how tough this will be for many fans, and I feel you guys. But before you start sending me .GIF’s of pitchforks and torches let me explain.
The first thing to know is that the show isn’t being cancelled- it’s being finished. This is 100% my choice, and its something I decided on a very long time ago. I always designed Gravity Falls to be a finite series about one epic summer- a series with a beginning, middle, and end. There are so many shows that go on endlessly until they lose their original spark, or mysteries that are cancelled before they ever get a chance to payoff.
But I wanted Gravity Falls to have a mystery that had a real answer, an adventure that had a real climax, and an ending that had a real conclusion for the characters I care so much about. This is very unusual in television and a pretty big experiment, and Disney for their part has been enormously supportive. I know that hits are rare in this business, and its hard to let one of them go, so I’m so grateful that this company has had the vision to let me start (and end) the show the way I always wanted to.
Why did we wait so long to announce that this was the last season? The truth is, it wasn’t up to me. Before we started Season 2, my writers and I decided that this season would be the last. I wanted to announce this to the world at large then, but I was restricted from doing so, mainly because I think a lot of people were hoping I’d change my mind.
But Gravity Falls was never meant to be a series that goes on and on forever. It’s meant to be an exploration of the experience of summer, and in a larger sense a story about childhood itself. The fact that childhood ends is exactly what makes it so precious- and why you should cherish it while it lasts.
No words can describe how grateful I am for the millions of fans who have cherished Gravity Falls for the time that it’s been on air. Running a TV show, especially one where you write, direct, supervise, and co-star, can be an incredibly grueling experience. But every hand-written letter, tweet, tattoo, piece of art, costume and creation from the fans made this enormous undertaking worthwhile. To the Gravity Falls fandom- I love you guys. You’re weird and clever and smart and curious and have been a constant inspiration to me and the crew. You’ve picked us up when we felt down and pushed and inspired us to do the best work we possibly could. I hope you enjoy watching our finale as much as we enjoyed dreaming it up.
And if you don’t, keep it to yourself, pal! Yeesh!
Could there be more Gravity Falls someday? Hirsch wrote:
Are you SURE you’ll never make more Gravity Falls?
I know that there will be many fans who will be sad to see the Pines family go, but just because I’ve finished the story I wanted to tell doesn’t necessarily mean we will never see Dipper, Mabel, & Stan again. It means that this chapter is closed, and that I, at least for now, am personally done telling their story.I want to thank Disney, my amazing cast and crew, and most of all our fans for taking this unforgettable road trip with me through the redwoods into a place called Gravity Falls. I look forward to seeing what adventure we go on next.
What do you think? Do you like the Gravity Falls TV show? Are you sorry that it’s ending? Are you hoping that Hirsch might do a new story with these characters some day in the future?
I don’t like Gravity Falls, I fall in love with this cartoon. One of the bests ever!!! No. Doubt for this.
If ur done telling the story let someone else tell it millions of ppl r counting on u
I have a name suggestion for you just in case you do decide to bring them back. If you decide to bring it back it should be called “Return to Gravity Falls” with a whole new story to master with Dipper and Mabel as young adults as they come to viit their uncles only to find a new series of mysteries to uncover and solve.
Great idea
That is so smart! Just because their childhood is over, doesn’t mean they have to end the show completely.
SOMEONE WHO SEES THIS PLEASE DO THAT!
I love Gravity Falls and I just wanna say Alex Hirsch you have a special connection with your sister right well guess what Gravity Falls brought my sister my father and me together I dont hang out with my sister much anymore and we fight alot but I think more Gravity Falls would end that also I dont usually just sit down with my father and watch tv usually he is at work all day or trying to relax and sleep in I also dont get to go anywhere that often with just me and my dad because he is… Read more »
Hey dude what’s up? Your show has created a bridge between my students and myself. I teach 8th grade and it can be overwhelming, but because of Gravity Falls (a show I adore), I am able to relate to them and so we build rapport quickly and my hectic students become my most hardworking ones. I just discovered the show about 4 months ago actually and I just can’t get enough. I have to pace myself now, since, I just learned there are only 2 seasons. If you do decide to make a comeback with the show, please do it… Read more »
I just wanted to say i hated to see the show go out like that i REALLY REALLY hope and pray you change your mind and make a season 3 because me i don’t think it ended right im so sad to see it go that was my Favorite show and now i have nothing im so sad please make a season 3 i beg you. p.s i love you so much.
Hey Alex! I understand why you want to stop the show, and why you think it’s best for your fans to write their own stories, write their own versions, have their own mysteries. I love Gravity Falls, probably a little more than most people, and so do my friends in my neighborhood. We’ve tried everything to “win back the falls”, for example, last year we attempted to make Summerween a real holiday. We failed, but that’s what next year’s for! (You know my email if it happens!) I’ve seen every season three video ever made, but they only make me… Read more »
Hello, Alex? I’m writing this to you because i’m a fan in general…a huge one i might add. The way you do Bill Cipher as the antagonist is mind boggling and Soos was pretty clever and funny too. When i saw the final episodes of marvelous season 2 me and my sister were excited yet i was heartbroken to see the credits and all their precious memories and faces fade away as Dipper and Mabel arrived at their destination. The point being is that i respect your decision…but that show meant wonders for me and my sis. We laughed, we… Read more »

It should continue because of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGACwJmYres it will explain why
i wish that he left the season off a little better than he did.
I really hope someday Dipper and Mabel make a comeback. That show meant a lot to me… I’m not gonna join an angry mob or anything to try and get Gravity Falls back. I accept Alex Hirsch’s decision; I just hope that the fandom never ends though.
My friends have been crying for weeks about this I really hope they could air just one more episode just to end the sorrow .
I hop that there will be a new story with them eventually, but I understand that this chapter is closed.
What about a new show using the same characters, but in this show, it turns out that bill was hiding inside Stanley’s head ever since Stanley got his memory back. And in the show finale, they fight someone more powerful than bill.
