Last month, CBS renewed 18 TV shows — including freshman comedies Kevin Can Wait, Man with a Plan, and Superior Donuts — but while it wasn’t cancelled, The Great Indoors also wasn’t among the renewals. Now, the Tiffany Network has moved the remaining season one episodes of The Great Indoors from Thursdays to Monday nights.
A workplace sitcom, The Great Indoors features adventure reporter Jack Gordon (Joel McHale), who finds himself surrounded by Millennials, after being reassigned to a stifling desk job. Stephen Fry, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Susannah Fielding, Chris Williams, Christine Ko, and Shaun Brown also star. According to the CBS press release, the network will air reruns of The Big Bang Theory in The Great Outdoors timeslot.
The Great Outdoors: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of The Great Indoors is averaging a 1.51 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.32 million viewers. The Great Indoors is currently ranked fifth among scripted CBS TV shows when sorted by its demo average and 13th in terms of total audience size. Those season averages don’t tell the whole story, though.
Although The Great Outdoors pilot earned a 1.91 rating in the demo and drew 8.814 million viewers, it has been downhill since then. The comedy series hit a season low with episode 1.16 on March 27th, which only averaged a 1.00 rating and drew 4.119 million total viewers, although it has rallied a bit in the past few weeks.
CBS has pretty high standards for its comedies, so considering the scheduling in change, in light of the recent ratings decline, certainly makes it seem somewhere between possible and likely that there will be no season two of The Great Indoors. The question remains: are they moving it to Mondays to save it, or to let it die a swift death?

Have your say. Should CBS cancel or renew The Great Indoors for a second season? Vote in our poll. As of the time this article was published, 72% of viewers think The Great Outdoors should be renewed.
What do you think? Have you been watching the first season? Should The Great Indoors be cancelled or renewed for season two on CBS? Don’t forget to vote, then sound off in the comments, below.
I think this schedule change means CBS is trying to screw over “The Great Indoors”, because the viewership for that one Monday episode (which was meant to be just a tryout) was terrible. I always thought CBS’s “high standards” for their sitcoms meant that they had to do very well not just in the ratings, but also with critics. “Mom” wasn’t doing as well in the ratings as the other CBS sitcoms that were on the air during its first season (2013-14), but its critical reception was the most positive of the new sitcoms of that season, so it ended… Read more »
Joel McHale is a good actor, but fortunately DTWS is now on Monday nites and saves television. Try some better comedies. Kevin can wait is good, Man with a Plan isn’t too bad. But would rather watch DWTS anytime over these.
I’m not a fan of THE GREAT INDOORS… just too idiotic. And I don’t care for Superior Donuts, either…. What a waste of the talented Judd Hirsch.
I love Joel McHale, but this show is a stinker. Sorry.
I can’t grade the whole series, but the episode that I saw in complete honesty was painful to sit through. It just wasn’t funny.
This show and The Odd Couple are the most likely CBS comedies to be cancelled
mom’s ratings are tanking. when this happens, CBS moves mom between two BBT or after two BBT to artificially prop up the ratings of mom. TGI is just the latest sacrificial lamb to save mom’s ratings
I really like the show but it is not on my must watch list so there you go.
