After months of anticipation, CBS’ remake of the Hawaii Five-0 series has finally premiered. All of the networks have tried to resurrect old shows in the past and they’ve usually been cancelled within one season. How will this one fare and what do you think?
Hawaii Five-0 revolves around Detective Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin), a decorated Naval officer-turned-cop. He returns to Hawaii to investigate his father’s death and ends up heading a federalized task force to fight crime. Co-starring on the show are Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park, and Jean Smart.
The debut attracted a very healthy 3.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 14.2 million total viewers. That was enough to put it in first place in both categories and it beat the number two show (ABC’s Castle) by more than 40% in the key demo.

Though this is certainly positive, one year earlier, the eighth season premiere of CSI: Miami did better — and that’s an established show that had already seen some attrition. Last year’s CSI: Miami brought in a 4.3 rating in the all-important demo and also 14.2 million total viewers.
So, the execs over at CBS are no doubt happy with this performance, though perhaps not overjoyed. They’ve pumped a lot of money and promotion into this new series and were hoping for a bigger debut. Of course, the real test will be to see if people come back week after week.
So, what do you think? Does the new Hawaii Five-0 have what it takes to survive or will it burn out? Did the violence bother you? Cancel or keep it?

I loved Hawaii Five-0. The writing is excellent, Alex O’Loughlin as McGarrett is perfect for the role and Scott Cann is wonderful as Danno. The chemistry between them is delightful. The rest of the cast is wonderful too and the scenery is breathtaking. This show will be a HIT!
I thought it was a great debut and has a lot of room to grow. The focus was on McGarrett and Danno, but the rest of the cast should get bumped up in later episodes. If CBS plays their cards right, they could turn this into a network version of The Shield. Give us a through line in the plot, have some side plots that are resolved episode to episode, but keep us hooked with something that is running. The action in the pilot was strong, but I credit director Len Wiseman for this. Hopefully future episodes will deliver as… Read more »
Scott Caan is the best actor of the show which was quiet fun but he’s the reason I’ll tune in again even though i didn’t like the guy playing McGarrett.
Loved it! It’s fun, escapist and just right for Monday night 10 PM after a long day at work. Alex O’Loughlin doesn’t have Jack Lord’s great wavy hair but Alex has a cute cleft chin and the best 6-packs in primetime! I’m not surprised H5O’s pilot is already doing well on iTunes.
To the critics who overthink escapist, shoot ’em up TV shows and who ponder why CBS picked an Australian actor for the biggest remake on American TV: the tractor scene in “The Back-Up Plan” and the pier scene in “Oyster Farmer,” that’s why!
This is a keeper!! I LOVE this show. I guess since everyone likes it so much they’ll cancel it. that’s how it works with the network. That’;s why some of these new shows aren’t doing so well. They are canceling to many established ones because of money. So there’s to many new ones. It sux!!
It stank!!! Bring back Jack Lord and the original. 2 of my friends watched it
and agreed.
I liked the show, but thought it would fare better with a different title, I felt distracted by the comparisons going on in my head to the original series.
Ideally, perhaps someday CBS will realize what we fans really want is Alex O’Loughlin back as Mick in Moonlight. I realize production at night was expensive, but how much more expensive can it be over what they spent shooting this pilot?
I loved it
Loved the show. Characters were exceptional in their parts, special FX were great, snappy comebacks were very good, plot was fantastic. Great to see a remade show done this well. Will continue to watch.
I loved it. The characters are really good and of course watching Alex O’Loughlin…well enough said. Looking forward to the next episode.
Aloha!!
The show has some snappy dialogue between Danno and McGarrett, and I like their interpersonal relationship. Danno is the star, though. Jack Lord was a diva, but Alex Whatshisface is just a cookie cutter pretty boy with little character, while Scott Caan is interesting to watch and gets the best lines. I like him better than the old Danno. I’m disappointed in the rest of the cast, though. The old show had better ethnic casting, I mean, how can you beat “Kam Fong as Chin Ho” and “Zulu as Kono”? The new show uses a Korean for a Chinese guy,… Read more »
I thought the show was a lot of fun, and I love the characters. I’ll definitely continue watching, and I think this show has a real future if the ratings hold up.
I don’t like to watch cop-tv show but this one kept me glued and cheering on my seat! Make it 2 hours, please.
This show is trying WAY too hard to be cool and machismo. I was a bit disappointed in the pilot. I felt the relationships were forced, and nobody stood out. I’ll give it another shot, but I think this show has a short future.
I thought they should re-name it “NCIS, Hawaii.”
I loved the showe! It is a keeper =)
