After becoming an almost immediate hit for NBC in Fall of 2006, Heroes dropped significantly in the ratings over the past couple seasons. Fans have complained about the storylines but the TV show has been one of the network’s biggest draws in the 18-49 demographic. NBC has opted to cancel it anyway.
Heroes follows a group of ordinary humans who have developed extraordinary powers that end up affecting their lives in positive and negative ways. The series’ large ensemble cast includes Adrian Pasdar, Ali Larter, Cristine Rose, Greg Grunberg, Hayden Panettiere, Jack Coleman, James Kyson Lee, Masi Oka, Milo Ventimiglia, Robert Knepper, Sendhil Ramamurthy, and Zachary Quinto.
The network had reportedly been considering three options to wrap up Heroes — a 13 episode order for mid-season, an order of four to six episodes that could be aired over a couple nights in the fall, or to just cancel the series outright.
Though Heroes still brought NBC some its better 18-49 ratings this season, the numbers just can’t justify costs with a sizable cast and special effects budget. The network has a large selection of new hour-long dramas to choose from and so, has decided to cut Heroes.
On the bright side, NBC is supposedly working on a plan to wrap up the series. Right now, it sounds like there will be a two or four hour event that will air mid-season. The details will revealed at NBC’s upfront presentation on Monday morning.
Over the past day or so, Grunberg has been tweeting and hinting that “the fat lady” was getting ready to sing. As the news broke of Heroes’ cancellation, he wrote, “I’m hearing The FAT LADY singing her ass off!!! #Heroes = Cancelled! Sad. BUT… W/bad news comes GOOD!! My Next Tweet will explain!!” Three hours later, and Grunberg still hasn’t tweeted again.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Heroes has been cancelled or was it long overdue? Will you watch the wrap-up event, whenever or whatever it is?

Oh, sorry, I just found out they cancelled “Ugly Betty…” I hadn’t heard.
My bad.
Sorry, everyone!! This is all my fault. My husband says there is a curse on my head. Apparently, all it really takes for a show to go off the air is for me to be a huge fan of it. Anyone heard of a show called “Eli Stone?” How about the soap opera “Guiding Light?” (O.k. cheesy, but it was a family tradition – 4 generations watched on TV or listened on the radio in the ol’ days…). And we all remember what happened to poor Conan. Don’t worry Leno fans, your show is safe cuz I’ll never watch that… Read more »
I have been waiting to hear when the next episodes will be starting and now THIS?? Heroes is the only show that I watch on a regular basis and look forward to seeing it every week….now what are we going to watch 🙁
Personally, I’m sick and tired of networks being populated with morons. Every time they get a good show with a following, they do something stupid to screw it up, then blame the viewers when they cancel it. I’m not sure when this trend started, but sometime around or before Heroes started, networks started taking long breaks in the middle of seasons on several shows. Heroes started that it’s first season, when it took off 1 1/2 months (12/4/06–1/22/07), then AGAIN (3/4/07–4/23/07). Smallville just this past season did the same thing (off from 11/20/09–1/29/10, then again from 2/26/10–3/18/10). FlashForward was off… Read more »
I use to love NBC but I am sick to death of these people behind the network! Every show I love gets cancelled by idiots who think they know what I like. After they cancelled My Name is Earl the sick way they did, Conan and now this? I’m done with this network.
AAARRRGGGG!!!! (Insert ALL expletives you could EVER think of here!) I loved the series! This was the only current TV that my whole family enjoyed! Plus, the season 4 finale left us with the cliffhanger of Claire exposing the super-powered beings existence to society!!! That in itself is what made Marvel Comics: X-Men so great. The next season would have put Heroes in the ratings top slot!!! With the social dynamics put into perspective creates a whole new higher level of viewer to character relation. Regardless of this series’ future, I only have ONE suggestion: Hire Stan Lee and Marvel… Read more »
This is sooo annoying!!!
This should be illegal to do. First they show x amount of seasons and sell blueray pack’s. Then they cancel the show and don’t even bother to wrap it up. THAT’S SO ARROGANT!!! And this is, mildly said, a theft. This is systematic con scheme.
Why bother watch any future shows on nbc, if it is highly possible that they cancel it?
The first season was awesome. The second season was just awful. The third season seemed like it was picking up and getting better. I was looking forward to the fourth season. Guess that won’t happen. I will miss Heroes and Hiro Nakamura. Maybe they should make a Hiro Nakamura show. 🙂
Sorry liam but I love Chuck! altho I do agree with you in asking why cancel Heroes??? It’s seem when the writers came back from the strike they got complacent, all their original ideas went out the door which was one of the things I loved about the show, come on how many times did we see a scene and said”WOW, did that really happen?”like when the cheer leader woke up during her autopsy and put herself back together, amazing, 2 great shows leaving us this year, Heroes and Lost, well at least one of them is leaving with some… Read more »
Sad, sad, and even MAD!! I am such a fan and have been since day 1!! I hate to see this show go, it was by far one of the best shows around that made you see life is challenging yet it holds great rewards if you try. Please bring the show back long enough to know what will become of the Heroes since the ending of season 4!!
I am so sad about this! I knew that it was coming soon, but I thought NBC would at least give them one more season to clue everything up! Unfortunately, NBC only cares about the ratings, and not the fan-base. Heroes is the most downloaded show, meaning that more people than what NBC thinks is watching it. Give the show it’s proper ending before saying goodbye!
I personally dislike pretty much every TV show but Heroes is one of the few TV shows I actually enjoy. Storylines are a little odd sometime and non of the season have built up a suspense as the first one but overall it is very enjoyable and I keep watching…I doubt NBC will have something that can top this shows great idea as a show in general its like the justice league but with ordinary people which intrigues the average joe in. I hate NBC now haha.
I am really pissed that they canceled Heroes. At first I avoided watching it like the plague because I assumed it sucked but then I started watching it and loved it so much. I officially hate NBC. First, they dick around with Conan and now Heroes. I am boycotting NBC and the only way in hell I will tune into that channel again is if they wrap up Heroes properly. Be it a 13 episode order for mid-season or an order of four to six episodes that could be aired over a couple nights in the fall.
Well, I stopped watching this season. Besides all the storyline jumping which was becoming frustrating I just felt the writes lost direction – just writing whatever junk came into their mind. Many I know stopped before me, and we were all fans when it came out. Here is a trend I notice, they come out with at show with great potential, then just replace it with something new. Its been so bad over the last 2 years that my wife and I refuse to watch any of the new shows that cant have a full plot wrapped up in the… Read more »
@Liam…because Chuck is still good and getting better. I am glad that they will be doing something about wrapping the show up but it hasn’t been good since Season One. Why do I still watch….probably because bad as it often was, it was still better than reality TV.
